Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Photograph
Damon could not move.
The words were simple.
Only three words.
But they carried the weight of six years of grief, confusion, and unanswered questions.
Emma didn't die.
The sentence replayed inside his mind again and again, louder every time.
Around him, the wedding guests remained frozen in their seats. The same people who had come to witness a beginning were now watching an ending unfold in real time.
Victoria stood beneath the wedding arch, her perfect makeup beginning to crack. The woman who had walked into the ballroom with confidence and certainty now looked like she was standing at the edge of a cliff.
Damon looked down at Lily.
The little girl was still holding the edge of her white dress, nervous and unsure.
She didn't understand why everyone was staring.
She didn't understand why the woman beside her was afraid.
She only knew she had done what her mother asked.
“Find him.””
Damon looked back at Victoria.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“Where is she?””
Victoria blinked.
“What?””
“Emma.””
The name seemed to hurt her.
Damon stepped closer.
“Where is Emma?””
Victoria looked away.
That was the first time Damon realized something terrifying.
Victoria wasn't shocked that he knew.
She was scared that he finally knew.
“Damon,” she said quietly, “this isn't the way you should find out.””
His expression hardened.
“You're right.””
He glanced around the ballroom.
“At my wedding?””
Victoria closed her eyes.
“This wasn't supposed to happen.””
A bitter laugh escaped him.
“Wasn't supposed to happen?””
He lifted the photograph.
“You brought me here. You put this ring on your finger. You stood in front of everyone and let me believe—”
His voice broke.
He stopped himself.
Because saying it out loud made it real.
“You let me believe she was dead.””
Victoria whispered, “I didn't have a choice.””
The guests reacted immediately.
A few people gasped.
Damon stared at her.
“No choice?””
Victoria looked toward the crowd.
“Not here.””
“Then where?””
Her eyes moved to Lily.
The little girl was watching them carefully.
Victoria lowered her voice.
“Please. Not in front of her.””
Damon followed her gaze.
For a moment, his anger softened.
Not because he forgave Victoria.
Because he saw Lily.
A child caught in a storm created by adults.
He crouched down beside her.
“Lily.””
She looked at him.
“Are you mad at me?””
The question hit him harder than anything Victoria had said.
“No.””
Damon's voice immediately softened.
“No, sweetheart.””
“Then why is everyone upset?””
He looked at the photograph in his hand.
At the face he had loved.
At the child who had somehow found her way into his life.
“I don't know yet.””
Lily hugged herself.
“My mommy said you would say that.””
Damon froze.
“What?””
“She said you would be confused.””
Victoria suddenly stepped forward.
“Lily.””
The girl's shoulders tightened.
Damon noticed.
Again.
That same fear.
“Victoria,” he said slowly, “why is she afraid of you?””
Victoria's face changed.
“She isn't.””
Lily looked down.
A child's silence could say more than words.
Damon stood.
“I'm calling the police.””
The room erupted.
Guests began whispering louder.
Victoria's eyes widened.
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
Too instantly.
Damon stared at her.
“Why not?””
“Because you don't understand what you're doing.””
“You're right.””
His voice was cold now.
“I don't understand why the woman I was going to marry lied to me for years.””
Victoria's jaw tightened.
“Damon, please listen to me.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I listened to you for six years.””
The sentence landed harder than he expected.
Victoria looked like she wanted to speak.
But no words came.
A man wearing a tuxedo stepped forward from the crowd.
“Damon, maybe we should take this somewhere private.””
Damon turned.
It was Marcus, his best friend.
The only person in the room who knew how deeply Emma's disappearance had destroyed him.
Marcus had been beside him after the accident.
He had watched Damon sit in silence for weeks.
He had watched him stop answering calls.
He had watched him keep Emma's old messages because deleting them felt like killing her twice.
Marcus looked at Lily.
Then at Victoria.
Then at Damon.
“This is bigger than a wedding.””
Damon nodded slowly.
“You're right.””
He looked at Victoria.
“It is.””
Victoria wiped a tear from her cheek.
“You think I'm the villain.””
Damon didn't answer.
Because he didn't know.
And that scared him.
He wanted to hate her.
It would have been easier.
But there was something else in her expression.
Something complicated.
Something hidden.
“Where is Emma?”” he asked again.
Victoria remained silent.
Damon's patience disappeared.
“Answer me.””
“I can't.””
The room went quiet.
“You can't?””
Victoria shook her head.
“Not yet.””
Damon stared at her.
The anger returned.
“Not yet?””
She stepped closer.
“If I tell you everything right now, you won't understand.””
“I don't need to understand.””
His eyes moved to Lily.
“I need the truth.””
Victoria looked at the little girl.
Then she whispered:
“She came back.””
Damon stopped.
“What?””
Victoria's voice trembled.
“Emma came back.””
The ballroom became silent again.
“She wasn't supposed to survive.””
Damon felt his stomach twist.
“What are you saying?””
Victoria looked at him.
“I thought she was gone too.””
Damon stared.
“You thought?””
Victoria nodded.
“The accident report was wrong.””
Marcus frowned.
“What accident report?””
Victoria looked at him.
“The one everyone saw.””
Damon's face tightened.
Everyone saw.
That phrase bothered him.
Because suddenly, every memory he had trusted felt uncertain.
The night he received the call.
The hospital.
The funeral arrangements.
The empty casket.
The people telling him to accept reality.
All of it.
“What happened after the accident?”” Damon asked.
Victoria looked down.
“I wasn't there.””
“Then how did you know she died?””
Her lips parted.
Before she could answer, a sound cut through the ballroom.
A phone ringing.
Everyone turned.
Victoria looked at the screen.
Her entire face changed.
Damon noticed.
“Who is it?””
She didn't answer.
The phone kept ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Finally, Victoria picked it up.
“Hello?””
No one could hear the voice on the other end.
But they could hear Victoria's reaction.
The color drained from her face.
Her hand began shaking.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“No. You can't do that.””
Damon stepped closer.
“Who is calling you?””
Victoria looked at him.
Her eyes were full of fear.
Not the fear of being exposed.
The fear of something worse.
“Damon...””
The phone slipped slightly in her hand.
“She's here.””
Damon stopped breathing.
“Who?””
Victoria looked toward the ballroom doors.
Everyone followed her gaze.
The massive wooden doors at the entrance remained closed.
The room waited.
Then the handle slowly turned.
A wave of whispers moved through the guests.
Damon's heart pounded.
Victoria took a step backward.
“No...””
The door opened.
A figure appeared in the doorway.
Damon couldn't see her face yet.
Only her silhouette.
Only the sound of her footsteps echoing across the marble floor.
Then a woman's voice filled the ballroom.
“Damon.””
His entire body went still.
Because he knew that voice.
A voice he had spent years trying to forget.
A voice he had dreamed of hearing one more time.
The woman stepped into the light.
And Damon saw the face he was told he would never see again.
Emma.
Alive.
But before he could say her name, Emma looked past him.
At Lily.
May you like
And whispered:
“I'm sorry I couldn't come sooner.””
