Chapter 6: The Truth Emma Hid
The message stayed on every phone screen.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the faint ticking of the old wall clock above the doorway.
*Ask Emma who she was really running from.*
Damon stared at the words until they blurred.
He had spent the last hour discovering that his entire life had been built on missing pieces.
But this was different.
This message wasn't exposing a lie.
It was pointing directly at Emma.
The woman he had spent six years mourning.
The woman he thought was the only innocent person in the room.
Slowly, Damon lifted his eyes.
Emma already knew.
He could see it.
The moment she saw his expression, she understood what he had read.
“Damon...””
His voice was quiet.
“Who were you running from?””
Emma looked down.
That answer hurt more than any confession could have.
Because she didn't say, “I wasn't.””
She didn't say, “It's not true.””
She just looked away.
Damon felt his chest tighten.
“Emma.””
Lily looked up at her mother.
“Mommy?””
Emma immediately softened.
She knelt beside her daughter.
“It's okay, baby.””
But Lily shook her head.
“No, it's not.””
The little girl looked around the room.
“Everyone keeps saying it's okay.””
Her innocent words cut through everyone.
“But nobody looks okay.””
Emma closed her eyes.
Because a child had noticed what the adults had been trying to hide.
Damon looked away for a moment.
Then he turned back.
“I need the truth.””
Emma stood slowly.
“I know.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You don't understand.””
She looked at him.
“I spent six years believing you were dead.””
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
“I went to your funeral.””
Her face broke.
“I know.””
“I talked to your picture because it was the only way I could hear your name.””
Emma covered her mouth.
Damon shook his head.
“And now I find out you were alive.””
His voice became softer.
“Then I find out you had a daughter.””
A pause.
“Then I find out there was a reason you never came back.””
Emma whispered:
“There was.””
Damon looked at her.
“Then tell me.””
The room waited.
Emma took a slow breath.
“When I woke up after the accident, I didn't remember everything.””
Damon nodded.
“You said that.””
“But I remembered one thing.””
She looked at him.
“I remembered someone chasing me.””
The room went still.
Marcus straightened.
“Emma.””
She ignored him.
“I remembered headlights behind my car.””
Damon felt cold.
“Someone was following you?””
Emma nodded.
“I didn't know who.””
She looked at the floor.
“I only knew I was afraid.””
Victoria whispered:
“You never told me that.””
Emma looked at her.
“Because I didn't trust anyone.””
The words landed heavily.
Victoria looked hurt.
Damon noticed.
But he also noticed something else.
She didn't deny it.
Emma continued.
“After I woke up, I heard people talking outside my hospital room.””
“What people?””
“I don't know.””
Her hands shook slightly.
“But they were asking if I remembered.””
Damon frowned.
“Remembered what?””
Emma looked at him.
“That was the problem.””
She swallowed.
“I didn't know.””
A silence followed.
Then Damon asked:
“So why did you disappear?””
Emma looked at Lily.
“Because I thought if I came back to you, I would put you in danger.””
Damon's expression changed.
“You decided that alone?””
Emma nodded.
“Yes.””
“You made a choice for me.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
The word came quickly.
Damon stepped closer.
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
Emma flinched.
Because part of her knew he was right.
Damon continued.
“You were afraid.””
“Yes.””
“And instead of trusting me...””
His voice broke.
“You left me.””
Emma looked like she wanted to argue.
But she couldn't.
Because she had no defense against losing six years.
“I was wrong.””
The honesty surprised him.
Emma wiped her tears.
“I should have found you.””
She looked at Lily.
“I should have fought harder.””
Damon looked down.
The anger inside him was still there.
But now it had to compete with something else.
Pain.
Because this was Emma.
The woman he loved.
The woman he never stopped loving.
And she was standing in front of him admitting that she had chosen to disappear.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Damon.””
Damon looked at him.
“What?””
“There is something else.””
Damon laughed quietly.
“Of course there is.””
Marcus ignored the sarcasm.
“The person behind the accident wasn't just trying to hide Emma.””
“What then?””
Marcus looked at Lily.
“They were trying to hide who knew the truth.””
Emma's face changed.
Damon noticed.
“What does that mean?””
Emma remained silent.
“Emma.””
She looked at him.
“Before the accident, I found documents.””
“What documents?””
“Records.””
“About what?””
Emma hesitated.
“About Lily.””
Damon waited.
“You already knew you were pregnant.””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Emma took a breath.
“And I found out someone had changed information about her birth.””
Damon frowned.
“Changed it how?””
Emma looked at him.
“The hospital records.””
The room went quiet.
Damon looked at Lily.
“You mean someone changed her records?””
Emma nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I don't know.””
A sharp knock interrupted them.
Everyone turned.
The door opened.
A security officer from the venue stepped inside.
“Mr. Damon?””
Damon frowned.
“What?””
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“We found this outside.””
He handed Damon a small envelope.
Damon immediately recognized it.
Another message.
Another warning.
He opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
His hands froze.
The picture showed Emma.
Standing outside the hospital.
Holding newborn Lily.
But there was someone else in the background.
Someone watching them.
Damon looked closer.
Then his face changed.
Because he recognized the person.
Victoria gasped.
“No.””
Marcus whispered:
“That can't be.””
Damon looked at Emma.
“Who is that?””
Emma didn't answer.
She couldn't.
Because the person in the photograph was impossible.
Someone who should never have been there.
Someone everyone believed had died.
Damon looked back at the image.
The figure standing behind Emma and baby Lily.
The figure watching them.
The figure who knew the truth from the beginning.
Finally, Damon whispered:
“Ethan.””
Nobody spoke.
Because Ethan Cole wasn't supposed to be alive.
But there he was.
In the photograph.
Standing behind Emma.
Three days after the accident.
Damon looked at Marcus.
“You said he disappeared.””
Marcus's face went pale.
“I was wrong.””
“No.””
Damon looked at the picture again.
“You weren't wrong.””
He turned toward everyone.
“You were lying.””
The room fell silent.
Then Emma spoke.
Her voice barely audible.
“There is something you need to know about Ethan.””
Damon looked at her.
“What?””
Emma looked terrified.
“He wasn't following me because he wanted to hurt me.””
A pause.
“He was trying to warn me.””
Damon stared.
“Warn you about what?””
Emma's eyes filled with fear.
“The person who ordered the accident.””
Damon waited.
Emma took a shaky breath.
“The person who wanted me gone...””
She looked directly at Victoria.
“Was someone we both trusted.””
Victoria stepped backward.
“No.””
Emma's voice was barely a whisper.
“It was someone close enough to know everything about us.””
Damon looked between them.
The answer was already forming.
But he refused to believe it.
Then Emma said the name.
And the world changed again.
“Damon...””
May you like
She swallowed.
“It was your father.””
