Chapter 8: The Person Behind the Curtain

Nobody spoke after Victoria's words.

“She was never talking about me.””

The sentence settled over the room like smoke.

Damon stared at her.

For the first time that night, Victoria didn't look like someone hiding a secret.

She looked like someone who had just realized there was an even bigger secret waiting behind it.

“Then who was she talking about?””

Victoria didn't answer immediately.

Her eyes moved toward Emma.

Emma looked confused.

“You know?””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

Damon stepped forward.

“Then why did you say that?””

Victoria swallowed.

“Because I know someone else who was always there.””

The room became tense.

Marcus stood.

“Who?””

Victoria looked at Damon.

And for a moment, Damon saw something unexpected.

Fear.

Not fear of being exposed.

Fear of what would happen when the truth came out.

“Your mother.””

The words landed harder than Damon expected.

“My mother?””

Victoria nodded.

Damon almost laughed.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“No, my mother had nothing to do with this.””

Emma looked at him.

“Damon.””

He turned.

“What?””

Emma didn't answer.

That hesitation was enough.

“You knew.””

Emma looked away.

Damon felt his stomach drop.

“Emma.””

“I knew your mother was involved.””

The room went silent.

Damon stepped back.

“How?””

Emma looked at him.

“Because she visited me.””

“When?””

“After I woke up.””

Damon stared.

“My mother visited you?””

Emma nodded.

“She came to the hospital.””

“Why?””

Emma looked down.

“She wanted to know if I remembered anything.””

Damon's face changed.

“She questioned you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Emma took a breath.

“Because she was afraid I would tell you.””

Damon turned away.

His mind struggled to process another impossible truth.

His family.

His father.

His mother.

People he had spent his entire life trusting.

All connected to a mystery he never knew existed.

“What did she say?””

Emma's eyes filled with pain.

“She told me you were finally happy.””

Damon looked at her.

“What?””

“She said you had moved on.””

His expression hardened.

“She knew I hadn't.””

Emma nodded.

“I told her that.””

“What did she say?””

Emma looked toward the window.

“She said some people had to disappear so others could survive.””

Damon froze.

The sentence sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

A phrase from someone who believed they were protecting him.

Not someone who understood what they had destroyed.

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“That doesn't sound like her.””

Damon looked at Marcus.

“You said that about my father too.””

Marcus fell silent.

Because he had.

Again and again.

People defended the people they knew.

Until the evidence became impossible to ignore.

Victoria sat down slowly.

“I need to tell you something.””

Damon looked at her.

“What?””

She looked exhausted.

“Your father didn't plan the accident alone.””

Emma closed her eyes.

Damon stared.

“Who helped him?””

Victoria looked at the floor.

“Your mother.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

Damon felt like he had been hit.

“No.””

Victoria nodded.

“I found out later.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because by the time I knew, I had already lied too.””

Damon laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

“So everyone decided the best way to protect me was to keep destroying my life.””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could argue.

Later that night, Damon sat alone in the empty ballroom.

The decorations were still there.

The wedding arch.

The flowers.

The lights.

Everything looked beautiful.

And completely wrong.

He had spent months planning this day.

He had imagined dancing with Victoria.

Giving a speech.

Beginning a future.

Instead, he was sitting among the remains of a celebration that never happened.

A quiet sound came from behind him.

Emma.

“You should sleep.””

Damon looked at her.

“I don't think I can.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

“No.””

He looked at her.

“You don't.””

Emma stopped.

Damon softened slightly.

“I don't mean that the way it sounds.””

She waited.

“I spent six years grieving you.””

Emma looked down.

“I know.””

“And now you're here.””

A pause.

“My brain still thinks I'm dreaming.””

Emma sat beside him.

“I dreamed about this moment too.””

Damon looked at her.

“What did you imagine?””

She smiled sadly.

“That you would hate me.””

The answer surprised him.

“Why?””

“Because I hated myself.””

Damon looked away.

Emma continued.

“I missed your birthday.””

His expression changed.

“I missed the day Lily took her first steps.””

She looked toward the empty room.

“I missed so much.””

Damon didn't know what to say.

Because he had missed it too.

Then Emma whispered:

“She knows your name because I talked about you.””

Damon looked at her.

“What?””

“I told her stories.””

“About me?””

Emma nodded.

“The good ones.””

His eyes softened.

“You still told her about me?””

“She needed to know where she came from.””

Damon swallowed.

“Why didn't you ever show her a picture?””

Emma hesitated.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That if she saw you, she would ask questions I couldn't answer.””

Damon looked down.

For the first time, he understood something.

Emma hadn't only been running from danger.

She had been running from impossible choices.

A phone rang.

Both of them looked up.

It was Marcus.

Damon answered.

“What?””

Marcus's voice sounded urgent.

“Damon, you need to come here.””

“Where?””

“I found something.””

Damon stood.

“What?””

A pause.

Then Marcus said:

“Your father's hidden files.””

Twenty minutes later, they arrived at Marcus's office.

The room was filled with old documents, computers, and photographs.

Marcus pointed to a folder on the desk.

“I found this buried in an old backup drive.””

Damon opened it.

Inside were dozens of files.

Financial reports.

Private messages.

Photos.

Then one document caught his attention.

A medical record.

Damon picked it up.

“What is this?””

Marcus looked serious.

“Read it.””

Damon scanned the page.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

“What?””

Emma moved closer.

“What did you find?””

Damon didn't answer.

He couldn't.

Because the document wasn't about Emma.

It wasn't about Lily.

It was about him.

A medical test from years ago.

A test he never knew existed.

Marcus whispered:

“Your father was investigating your birth.””

Damon looked up.

“My birth?””

Marcus nodded.

“He thought something was wrong.””

Damon stared at the paper.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Then Emma saw another page.

Her face turned pale.

“Damon.””

He looked at her.

“What?””

She slowly handed him the page.

At the top was a name.

A name that changed everything.

Because it wasn't his father's.

It wasn't his mother's.

It wasn't Ethan's.

It was someone else.

Someone connected to all of them.

Someone Damon trusted.

Damon read the name.

And his blood ran cold.

*Marcus Reed.*

He looked up.

His closest friend stood silently across from him.

“Why is your name on this?””

Marcus didn't speak.

Damon's voice became a whisper.

“Marcus...””

His friend looked away.

And that was when Damon knew.

May you like

The biggest betrayal had not been hidden in his family.

It had been standing beside him the entire time.
