Chapter 10: The Document With My Signature
“Mom…”
Jordan’s voice sounded different.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Afraid.
I looked at him.
“What is it?””
He didn’t answer.
He just stared at the phone screen Marcus was holding.
The auditorium lights reflected off the glass.
A single message.
A single file.
Something connected to my son’s childhood.
Something with my name on it.
I stepped closer.
“Jordan, what did you see?””
He looked at Marcus.
“Can you send it to me?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then he nodded.
A few seconds later, Jordan’s phone vibrated.
He opened the file.
And I watched every emotion cross his face.
Confusion.
Pain.
Disbelief.
“Jordan?””
He looked at me.
“Mom…”
My heart tightened.
“Tell me.””
He turned the phone around.
The screen showed an old document.
A custody agreement.
My eyes immediately recognized it.
The faded formatting.
The legal language.
The signatures at the bottom.
Mine.
Marcus’s.
And another section I had never seen before.
Jordan zoomed in.
“This says you agreed to something.””
I frowned.
“Agreed to what?””
He swallowed.
“That Dad would have primary educational decision authority.””
The world seemed to stop.
“What?””
Marcus looked shocked.
“I never saw this.””
Jordan looked between us.
“But your signature is here.””
I reached for the phone.
My hands trembled.
I studied the page.
The signature looked like mine.
The handwriting looked like mine.
But something felt wrong.
“I never signed this.””
Everyone went silent.
Vanessa suddenly looked away.
Jordan noticed.
“Vanessa.””
She didn’t respond.
“Did you know about this?””
“No.””
Too fast.
The answer came too quickly.
Jordan narrowed his eyes.
“You’re lying.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“I’m not.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Then why did you look scared?””
She looked at him.
“I just don’t want this family destroyed.””
Jordan laughed bitterly.
“Family?””
He shook his head.
“You keep using that word like it means controlling everything.””
The dean looked uncomfortable.
“I think we should move this discussion somewhere private.””
But I couldn’t move.
Not yet.
Because my entire life was standing in front of me.
A document saying I gave away something I would never give away.
My rights as a mother.
I looked at Marcus.
“Did you know about this?””
He looked hurt.
“No.””
“Are you sure?””
His face changed.
A painful silence.
Then:
“I knew there was paperwork.””
My heart sank.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked down.
“When we divorced, Vanessa helped organize some documents.””
I stared at him.
“She helped?””
He nodded slowly.
“I thought she was just making copies.””
Jordan stepped back.
“You let her handle legal documents about me?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“I made a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
Jordan’s voice rose.
“You let someone who wasn’t even my parent decide things about my life?””
The audience watched silently.
Nobody interrupted.
Because everyone understood.
This wasn’t about a graduation seat anymore.
This was about years of decisions made without me.
Jordan looked back at the document.
“Mom, did you ever agree to Dad having more control?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Never?””
“Never.””
He looked relieved for half a second.
Then worried.
“Then why does this exist?””
I didn’t have an answer.
But someone did.
Vanessa.
She quietly said:
“Because maybe you forgot.””
The room turned toward her.
I stared.
“What?””
She lifted her chin.
“People forget things, Nia.””
My stomach twisted.
“You’re saying I forgot signing away my own rights?””
“I’m saying life was complicated.””
Jordan stepped between us.
“Don’t.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I’m not attacking her.””
“Yes, you are.””
Jordan’s voice was cold.
“You’re trying to make everyone question her.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Did you create this?””
She looked offended.
“How could you ask me that?””
“Because every time we find something, your name is close to it.””
The silence after that was brutal.
Vanessa looked away.
The dean approached.
“Jordan, the university needs copies of all documents related to this issue.””
Jordan nodded.
“I’ll provide them.””
I looked at my son.
“You shouldn’t have to fight this on your graduation day.””
He smiled sadly.
“Mom, you fought for me my whole life.””
A tear escaped.
“I never wanted you to fight for me.””
“I know.””
He looked at the stage.
“But somebody had to.””
Marcus took a deep breath.
“Nia.””
I looked at him.
“I need to tell you something.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
He hesitated.
“After the divorce, there was one more agreement.””
Jordan looked up.
“One more?””
Marcus nodded.
“And I think we need to find out if that one was changed too.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
Jordan noticed.
“Why does she look like she already knows?””
Nobody answered.
Then the dean’s assistant walked toward us.
She held a folder.
“Jordan?””
He turned.
“Yes?””
She looked at the papers in her hand.
“We found the original version.””
Jordan took the folder.
Opened it.
May you like
And froze.
Because the signature at the bottom wasn’t mine.
