Chapter 13: The Friend Who Knew Everything
The photograph on Jordan’s phone changed the room.
Not because it showed something shocking.
Because it showed something familiar.
A memory.
A moment from a life I thought I understood.
I stared at the screen.
There I was.
Younger.
Smiling.
Standing beside Jordan when he was only a small boy.
And beside us was Darlene.
My best friend.
The woman who knew every chapter of my struggle.
The woman who knew how many nights I stayed awake worrying about money.
The woman who knew Jordan’s favorite foods, his fears, his dreams.
The woman who called me family.
Beneath the photograph was a message.
“I can explain why I did it.””
Jordan looked at me.
“Mom.””
I couldn’t answer.
My mind was trapped somewhere years earlier.
A memory.
Darlene sitting at my kitchen table.
Holding a cup of coffee.
Telling me, “Nia, one day Jordan will understand everything you did for him.””
I believed her.
I trusted her.
Maybe that was the part that hurt the most.
I never questioned her.
Not once.
Marcus looked at the screen.
“Who sent this?””
Jordan checked.
“It came from the same archive contact.””
The dean stepped closer.
“Jordan, do you know this person?””
He nodded.
“She was my mom’s friend.””
Vanessa looked confused.
“Then why would she do this?””
Nobody answered.
Because the truth was, we didn’t know.
And not knowing was almost worse.
Jordan looked at me.
“Do you want to call her?””
My first instinct was no.
I wanted to pretend this wasn’t real.
I wanted to wake up and be back at home, planning graduation pictures.
But I had spent too many years letting painful truths hide behind silence.
So I nodded.
“Yes.””
Jordan called.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then a voice answered.
“Nia?””
The sound of Darlene’s voice almost broke me.
“Why?””
Silence.
A long silence.
Then:
“I knew you would find out eventually.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Vanessa whispered, “Wow.””
Jordan held the phone.
“Darlene, what did you do?””
She sighed.
“I didn’t want it to happen this way.””
I stepped closer.
“What way?””
“The truth coming out in front of everyone.””
My heart tightened.
“You knew?””
Another pause.
“Yes.””
The auditorium became silent.
Even the people who didn’t know the full story understood something terrible was happening.
Jordan’s voice hardened.
“Why did you report my mother?””
Darlene didn’t answer.
“Why?””
Finally, she spoke.
“Because I watched her spend her entire life giving everything away.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She gave everything to you, Jordan.””
Her voice cracked.
“And nobody ever gave anything back.””
I looked at Jordan.
“That doesn’t explain hurting us.””
Darlene continued.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
“I watched Marcus move on. I watched Vanessa take credit. I watched you struggle while everyone else acted like they built your success.””
My chest tightened.
“Darlene…”
“I thought exposing everything would force people to see the truth.””
Jordan shook his head.
“But you didn’t expose the truth.””
His voice was quiet.
“You changed it.””
Silence.
Darlene started crying.
“I made one mistake.””
Jordan looked at the phone.
“One?””
She didn’t answer.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Darlene, why did you create false reports?””
She hesitated.
Then:
“Because I thought Nia deserved everything.””
I looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Darlene’s voice lowered.
“It means I knew something nobody else knew.””
The room froze.
Jordan looked at me.
“What?””
Darlene continued.
“Years ago, when Marcus and Vanessa started getting close…”
Marcus’s expression changed.
“Wait.””
Darlene ignored him.
“I found out Vanessa wasn’t just trying to replace you.””
Vanessa went pale.
Jordan stared.
“What are you talking about?””
Darlene whispered:
“She was trying to rewrite the entire story of how Jordan became successful.””
My heart raced.
“What story?””
Darlene answered:
“The story where she could take your place.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“That’s not true.””
Darlene laughed sadly.
“You know it is.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Explain.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Jordan stepped forward.
“No more secrets.””
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
And for the first time, she looked completely defeated.
May you like
Because Darlene had just revealed something bigger.
Something nobody saw coming.
