Chapter 9: The Truth Behind The Signature

Nobody spoke after Vanessa’s confession.

Not even Vanessa.

She looked like she regretted saying anything.

But it was too late.

The truth had already entered the room.

Jordan stepped closer.

“What were you trying to remove?””

Vanessa looked at him.

Then at Marcus.

Then at me.

Her eyes stopped on the flowers in my hands.

“You.””

The word was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Jordan frowned.

“Me?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“I was trying to remove the conflict.””

Jordan stared.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does to me.””

Marcus looked disgusted.

“Explain.””

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“I was tired of feeling like I was always second.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

Second.

She had walked into a family that already existed and felt offended that history came before her.

Vanessa continued.

“Every time Jordan succeeded, everyone talked about Nia.””

She looked at me.

“Her sacrifice. Her hard work. Her dedication.””

Her voice cracked.

“And I was standing right there.””

Jordan’s expression softened slightly.

Not with forgiveness.

With understanding.

He finally saw the real reason.

Not love.

Not protection.

Insecurity.

Vanessa had spent years trying to compete with a mother who was never competing with her.

Marcus shook his head.

“You changed official records because you felt ignored?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I felt invisible.””

Marcus answered immediately.

“You erased someone else to make yourself visible.””

She looked down.

That sentence hit harder than anything else.

Jordan took a step back.

“So the complaint…”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I didn’t know it would go that far.””

“What complaint?””

She didn’t answer.

Marcus did.

His voice was quiet.

“She filed a concern with the university.””

Everyone looked at him.

“About what?””

Marcus looked at Jordan.

“She questioned whether your financial records were accurate.””

Jordan froze.

“She questioned me?””

Vanessa spoke quickly.

“I thought there were mistakes.””

Jordan shook his head.

“You knew there weren’t.””

“I was trying to understand.””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“You were trying to find a reason to prove I didn’t belong.””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But no words came.

Because sometimes silence is the closest thing to an admission.

The dean stepped forward.

“Jordan, the university will review all documents.””

Jordan nodded.

“Okay.””

She looked at him.

“But regardless of the outcome, your graduation achievement remains yours.””

Jordan thanked her quietly.

Then he looked at me.

I knew that look.

He was worried about me.

Even now.

After everything.

He still cared more about my heart than his own anger.

I walked closer.

“Jordan.””

He turned.

“I’m proud of you.””

His eyes filled.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I touched his graduation stole.

“You don’t apologize for defending the truth.””

Marcus stood nearby.

Watching us.

And for the first time, I saw regret instead of pride.

He approached slowly.

“Nia.””

I looked at him.

“There’s something else.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

He glanced at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“The attorney said the documents weren’t the only thing she changed.””

Jordan looked up.

“What else?””

Marcus hesitated.

“I don’t know yet.””

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“Marcus.””

He turned.

“What?””

She looked afraid again.

“No.””

Jordan noticed.

“What?””

Vanessa stepped back.

“Nothing.””

But nobody believed her.

Marcus’s phone buzzed once more.

He checked it.

Then his face went blank.

“What?”” I asked.

He slowly turned the screen toward Jordan.

Jordan read the message.

And his entire expression changed.

Because the university had found another file.

A file connected to Jordan’s childhood.

A file that carried a signature.

My signature.

May you like

And Jordan whispered:

“Mom…”
