Chapter 10: The Family We Choose

Nobody spoke.

The document remained on the desk.

A single signature.

A single name.

A final betrayal.

Marcus Vale.

The man who claimed he was protecting the truth.

The man who brought them the missing envelope.

The man who revealed everyone else’s secrets.

Alessia looked at him.

“You.””

Marcus didn’t deny it.

That was almost worse.

“You were involved.””

“Yes.””

Vittorio’s face hardened.

“Why?””

Marcus looked older suddenly.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

“Because I thought I could control it.””

The same words.

Again.

Everyone had their reason.

Everyone thought they were saving something.

Everyone had destroyed something instead.

“You betrayed me,” Vittorio said.

Marcus looked at him.

“I protected your company.””

“No.””

Vittorio shook his head.

“You protected yourself.””

The words landed because Marcus knew they were true.

“I started moving money to expose your brother.””

Alessia frowned.

“That makes no sense.””

Marcus nodded.

“I know how it sounds.””

“Because it sounds like you’re making excuses.””

“I’m not.””

He looked at Vittorio.

“Your brother was planning to destroy everything. I created the accounts because I needed proof.””

“Then why hide it?””

Marcus looked away.

“Because once I had access, I saw how much damage had already been done.””

Alessia listened carefully.

For the first time, she realized something.

Every person involved had a version of the same story.

They started with one secret.

Then another.

Then another.

Until the truth became impossible to separate from the lies.

“What happened to my mother?”” Alessia asked.

The question changed everything.

Nobody moved.

Marcus looked down.

“She was going to expose everyone.””

Vittorio closed his eyes.

“And?””

“She disappeared before she could.””

Alessia’s voice trembled.

“You said she wasn’t destroyed.””

Marcus looked at her.

“She wasn’t.””

“Then where is she?””

The silence was immediate.

Too immediate.

Alessia felt her heart stop.

Marcus reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Not old.

Not damaged.

New.

He placed it in front of her.

“Your mother wanted you to have this when you were ready.””

Alessia stared.

“My mother?””

Marcus nodded.

“She’s alive.””

The world stopped.

Vittorio grabbed the edge of the desk.

Eleanor covered her mouth.

Grant whispered, “That’s impossible.””

Alessia couldn’t breathe.

All the grief she had carried.

All the years believing she had lost the one person who truly loved her.

Suddenly everything changed.

“She’s alive?””

Marcus nodded.

“She was forced to disappear.””

“By who?””

Marcus looked at the family.

“By the same person who started all of this.””

Alessia opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

One sentence.

One sentence that broke her heart.

My daughter, I never left because I wanted to.

Tears filled her eyes.

She pressed the letter against her chest.

For years, she had believed she was abandoned.

Now she knew.

She had been protected.

But protection had stolen her life from her.

And she didn’t know if she could forgive that.

Days later, Alessia stood outside a quiet house on the edge of town.

Not a mansion.

Not a place filled with marble and secrets.

Just a small home.

A place where someone had waited.

Vittorio stood beside her.

“You don’t have to go inside if you’re not ready.””

Alessia looked at the door.

“I’ve spent my whole life waiting for answers.””

She took a breath.

“I’m ready.””

The door opened.

And there she was.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Her mother.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then her mother whispered her name.

“Alessia.””

And that was enough.

Everything else disappeared.

The anger.

The betrayal.

The years apart.

Not erased.

Never erased.

But finally understood.

Alessia stepped forward.

And the woman who had loved her before anyone else held her like she was still the little girl she remembered.

Behind them stood a broken family trying to rebuild.

Vittorio.

Grant.

Even Eleanor.

Not forgiven.

Not forgotten.

But forced to face what they had done.

Because family was not the name written on a document.

It wasn’t a last name.

It wasn’t money.

It wasn’t power.

Family was the people who told the truth when lies were easier.

The people who stayed when leaving was simpler.

The people who chose love without needing control.

Alessia spent years searching for where she belonged.

She thought it was hidden in a DNA test.

In a family name.

In a secret waiting to be uncovered.

But the truth was simpler.

She belonged because she existed.

Because she was loved.

Because no lie ever had the power to erase who she was.

And for the first time in her life, Alessia Romano stopped asking where she came from.

She finally knew exactly where she stood.
