Chapter 6: The Warning From the Past
The word warning stayed in Alessia’s mind.
Not a message.
Not a letter.
A warning.
Her mother had known something dangerous enough that she wasn’t just trying to reveal the truth.
She was trying to protect someone.
“Protect who?”” Alessia asked.
Eleanor looked at her.
“I don’t know.””
Nobody believed that either.
Eleanor had spent years controlling information.
She didn’t forget things.
She buried them.
Vittorio moved closer.
“Where is the envelope?””
Eleanor crossed her arms.
“Gone.””
“You said it was gone.””
“It is.””
“Then where did it go?””
Her silence answered again.
Grant sat down heavily.
Everything he had believed about his family was falling apart.
“My entire life,” he whispered.
Nobody responded.
Because everyone was thinking the same thing.
How much of their lives had been built on lies?
Vittorio returned to the old files.
He opened each document carefully.
Bank statements.
Property records.
Copies of business transactions.
Then he stopped.
Alessia noticed.
“What?””
He handed her a page.
She read it.
Her eyes narrowed.
“What is this?””
“A transfer.””
“To where?””
Vittorio pointed.
“A private account.””
The name attached to it made everyone freeze.
Grant stood.
“That’s impossible.””
Vittorio looked at him.
“Why?””
Grant’s face went pale.
“Because that account belongs to me.””
The room went silent.
Alessia looked at Grant.
“No.””
Grant shook his head.
“I didn’t open that.””
Vittorio studied the document.
The account was connected to Grant’s name.
But the transactions began before he was old enough to authorize them.
“This was created when you were a child,” Vittorio said.
Grant stared.
“Someone used my name.””
Eleanor looked toward the window.
That small movement did not escape Alessia.
“You knew,” she said.
Eleanor didn’t answer.
“You knew someone used your son.””
Still silence.
Alessia stepped closer.
“Who?””
Eleanor finally turned.
“I don’t know.””
This time, Alessia believed she might actually mean it.
Because fear had replaced control.
And real fear was harder to fake.
Vittorio picked up another document.
“The money trail.””
He scanned the page.
“It leads through several companies.””
Grant looked confused.
“Whose companies?””
Vittorio didn’t answer immediately.
Then he looked at the family portrait hanging above the desk.
A portrait of generations of Romanos.
People smiling.
People pretending.
“It leads to someone close.””
Alessia felt a cold feeling settle in her chest.
Someone close.
Again.
The same words.
The same nightmare.
Everyone she trusted seemed to have another face hidden beneath the one she knew.
Her phone buzzed.
The sound startled everyone.
Alessia looked down.
Unknown number.
One message.
She opened it.
Her face changed.
Vittorio noticed.
“What is it?””
She handed him the phone.
The message contained only one sentence.
Stop digging, or you’ll lose the only family you have left.
Grant stood.
“Who sent that?””
Nobody knew.
Then another message appeared.
This time with a photograph attached.
Alessia opened it.
Her breathing stopped.
It was a picture of her mother.
But not the old photograph.
A recent photograph.
Impossible.
Her mother had been gone for years.
“How did they get this?””
Vittorio looked closer.
Then his expression changed.
“That’s not recent.””
Alessia looked at him.
“What?””
He pointed.
“The background.””
She stared.
A building.
A street sign.
A location.
Her mother had taken this photograph years ago.
But someone had access to it now.
Someone who knew exactly what would scare her.
Eleanor whispered something.
“What?””
Everyone looked at her.
She stared at the phone.
“I thought I destroyed everything.””
Alessia’s heart raced.
“You didn’t.””
Eleanor slowly shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“I didn’t.””
Vittorio stepped forward.
“Then who did?””
Nobody answered.
Because deep down, they all knew the same thing.
Someone had been waiting.
Waiting for Alessia to discover the truth.
Waiting for Vittorio to open the old wounds.
Waiting for this family to start breaking apart.
And now that the secrets were exposed, whoever had been hiding in the shadows was ready to step forward.
Alessia looked at the message again.
Stop digging.
She looked around the room.
At her father.
At Grant.
At Eleanor.
At the family that had lied to her for years.
Then she looked back at the phone.
For the first time in her life, she wasn’t afraid of the truth.
She was afraid of what someone would do to keep it hidden.
And that meant one thing.
May you like
Her mother’s secret was never just about the past.
It was still alive.
