Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath the Lies

The letter sat in Alessia’s hands like it weighed a hundred pounds.

Not because of the paper.

Because of what it represented.

Years of silence.

Years of pain.

Years of people making decisions about her life without allowing her to speak.

She looked around the office.

At Vittorio.

At Eleanor.

At Grant.

At Marcus.

Four people connected to the secret.

Four people who had all claimed, in one way or another, that they were protecting someone.

But protection had become the excuse everyone used when they wanted to control the truth.

Alessia looked back at the letter.

The handwriting belonged to her mother.

She knew that instantly.

A daughter never forgets the way her mother writes.

The curves.

The pressure of the pen.

The small details nobody else would notice.

Her mother had left this for her.

Not for Vittorio.

Not for Eleanor.

Not for the Romano family.

For her.

She continued reading.

My dear Alessia,

If you are reading this, then I am no longer there to explain what happened.

I wish I could tell you that everyone involved was evil.

That would make things easier.

But the truth is more painful.

Sometimes people hurt others because they are selfish.

Sometimes they hurt others because they are afraid.

And sometimes they hurt others because they believe their own lies.

Alessia paused.

Her eyes moved toward Vittorio.

He looked away.

Because he knew those words were meant for him too.

She kept reading.

The person who changed the course of your life was not trying to destroy you.

They were trying to save you.

But they made the wrong choice.

Alessia lowered the letter.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

The silence itself became an answer.

Someone in the room knew.

Someone had always known.

Marcus looked at Eleanor.

Eleanor looked at Grant.

And Grant’s face slowly changed.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Grant shook his head.

“No, that’s not possible.””

Alessia felt a knot form in her stomach.

“What?””

Grant looked at the letter.

Then at the photograph.

Then at Eleanor.

“Mom.””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

A quiet, defeated expression crossed her face.

Grant stepped back.

“It was you.””

The room went silent.

Alessia’s heart raced.

“What was?””

Grant looked at his mother.

“You told me never to tell her.””

Eleanor didn’t respond.

“Grant,” Vittorio said.

But Grant was already unraveling.

“I thought I was helping.””

Alessia stared at him.

“Helping who?””

Grant looked at her.

And the guilt on his face was the answer before his words came.

“You.””

The room became still.

Alessia almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because sometimes the truth was so unbelievable your mind rejected it.

“You’re saying you knew?””

Grant nodded slowly.

“I knew your mother left the letter.””

Her eyes filled with disbelief.

“How?””

“Because I found it.””

“When?””

Grant swallowed.

“The night before we got married.””

Everything stopped.

The night before they got married.

The night she thought was the beginning of her new life.

The night she believed she was finally leaving behind all the loneliness of her childhood.

Grant had found the truth.

And he hid it.

“Why?”” she asked.

His voice broke.

“Because my mother begged me.””

Alessia stared.

“She told me if you knew everything, you would leave.””

“So you chose for me?””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“I thought if I kept you close, I could protect you.””

Alessia shook her head.

“You weren’t protecting me.””

Tears filled Grant’s eyes.

“I know.””

“You were protecting yourself.””

He looked down.

Because he knew.

Eleanor finally spoke.

“He was trying to save you from something he didn’t understand.””

Alessia turned toward her.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“And you let him hide it.””

Eleanor’s face softened.

For the first time, Alessia saw something she never expected.

Regret.

“I was wrong.””

The words sounded strange coming from Eleanor.

Like a language she had never spoken before.

“I spent years believing I could control the damage.””

She looked at Vittorio.

“I thought if Alessia stayed away from the truth, she would stay safe.””

Vittorio’s expression hardened.

“You destroyed her life.””

Eleanor accepted the accusation.

“I know.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You still don’t understand the whole story.””

Nobody looked at him.

Because they were tired of half-truths.

“Then explain,” Alessia said.

Marcus nodded.

“Your mother discovered someone inside the company was stealing money.””

Vittorio looked at him.

“Who?””

Marcus looked at Eleanor.

Everyone froze.

“No,” Eleanor whispered.

Alessia’s heart dropped.

“What?””

Marcus’s voice was quiet.

“The person responsible was not Eleanor.””

Vittorio stared.

“Then who?””

Marcus looked at the old photograph.

“The person who benefited most.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus said the name.

“Your uncle.””

The room went silent.

Alessia frowned.

“My uncle?””

Vittorio’s face changed.

Because he understood.

“My brother.””

Marcus nodded.

“Your mother discovered your uncle had been moving money for years.””

Vittorio looked devastated.

“He’s dead.””

“Yes.””

“And she knew?””

“She knew everything.””

Alessia looked at the photograph.

The smiling family.

The perfect image.

All built on something rotten underneath.

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Because she was afraid he wasn’t working alone.””

The room became cold.

Vittorio looked around.

“Who else?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Everyone looked at the same person.

Eleanor.

Alessia shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus quickly said, “Not Eleanor.””

Everyone stopped.

“Then who?””

Marcus looked at Grant.

And Alessia felt her heart sink.

“Grant.””

Grant went pale.

“What?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Your uncle used your name because you were the easiest person to manipulate.””

Grant stepped back.

“I was a child.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you looking at me like that?””

Marcus’s voice softened.

“Because someone continued using your accounts after your uncle died.””

Grant froze.

Vittorio looked at his son.

“What are you saying?””

Marcus reached into his pocket and pulled out another document.

The final piece.

The one nobody expected.

“The person who continued the scheme was someone who had access to everything.””

He placed it on the desk.

Everyone stared.

The signature was visible.

Alessia covered her mouth.

Because the name on the document belonged to someone they trusted.

May you like

Someone who had been helping them uncover the truth.

Someone standing in the room.
