Chapter 10: The Child They Tried to Steal
For one terrible moment, I forgot how to breathe.
Ava's arms were locked around my neck. Her face was pressed against my shoulder, and I could feel her tears soaking through my blouse.
Daniel stood in front of us, holding the medical certificate as casually as someone presenting a dinner menu.
“The little girl you're holding is not your daughter at all.””
I looked down at Ava.
Her hazel eyes were swollen from crying. A tiny freckle sat beside her nose, just as it had since infancy. I remembered the first time she wrapped her fingers around mine, the first time she called me Mommy, the first time she fell asleep against my chest.
No document could erase those memories.
“You're lying,” I said.
Daniel smiled.
“Then why did Evelyn arrange a DNA test?””
Michael struggled against the guard holding him.
“Daniel, stop this.””
Daniel turned toward him.
“You've had eighteen months to stop this, Michael. Instead, you married my daughter, helped her search for the violin, and kept the money moving through accounts I specifically told you to close.””
“I never knew what Vanessa was planning.””
“You knew enough.””
Michael's face tightened.
Daniel turned back to me.
“Evelyn discovered something shortly before she died. Something that threatened the trust, the money, and the identity of the child she had raised as her own.””
I held Ava tighter.
“What did she discover?””
“That the hospital records had been altered.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
Daniel continued.
“Twenty-five years ago, two newborn girls were delivered at a private hospital. One belonged to Margaret Cross. The other belonged to a woman who died during childbirth. The hospital made a mistake with the identification bracelets.””
Lily slowly rose from the floor.
“You told me I was Margaret's daughter.””
“I told you what I needed you to believe.””
She stared at him.
“Which one of us is Margaret's child?””
Daniel lifted the certificate.
“That depends on which records you trust.””
I looked toward Michael.
He was watching Daniel with an expression I had never seen before.
Not fear.
Recognition.
“Michael,” I said quietly, “what do you know?””
He swallowed.
“My father kept a private file about the hospital. I found it after he died. There were two birth certificates, two sets of medical records, and a report from a nurse who claimed the babies had been switched.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I didn't know which child was which.””
Daniel laughed.
“Because Robert made sure no one could ever know.””
Lily took a step toward him.
“You let me grow up believing I was your daughter.””
“You were my daughter.””
“Not by blood.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“Blood is a convenient word people use when they want to pretend family is simple. I raised you. I fed you. I protected you.””
“You used me.””
“I gave you a life.””
“You gave me lies!””
Her voice cracked across the room.
For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely angry.
He handed the certificate to one of the guards.
“Take the child upstairs.””
I backed away.
“No.””
The guard approached.
I turned my body, shielding Ava.
“Touch her, and I'll scream until every neighbor in this county hears me.””
Daniel sighed.
“Claire, you're making this unnecessarily difficult.””
“You brought armed men into a house and kidnapped my daughter. Difficult is the least of your problems.””
He stepped closer.
“Then let's simplify things. Give me the original trust documents, and I'll allow you to leave with the child.””
“Why do you need them if you already have the money?””
“Because the money isn't mine.””
The answer surprised me.
Daniel glanced toward Lily.
“Margaret established the trust to compensate the families whose money I lost. She placed it beyond my reach. Evelyn helped her hide the assets, and Robert helped create a second set of records that concealed the true beneficiaries.””
“Then why are you trying to get the money?”” I asked.
“Because someone else has been stealing it.””
He pulled another document from his jacket.
A list of transfers appeared beneath the heading *Unauthorized Disbursements*.
The first transaction was dated eleven months earlier.
The day my mother died.
The recipient was a company I recognized immediately.
Michael's investment firm.
I looked at my ex-husband.
“Did you take money from the trust?””
Michael shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel smiled.
“Then explain the transfers.””
Michael stared at the page.
“I never authorized these.””
“Your signature is right there.””
“It's forged.””
Daniel laughed.
“Everyone's signature is forged when the money disappears.””
I glanced at the documents scattered across the table. The same names appeared repeatedly: Daniel Cross, Robert Cross, Vanessa Cross, Michael Hart.
And then I saw another name.
Rebecca Lawson.
My mother's attorney.
A transfer of four hundred thousand dollars had been made to her account three days before Evelyn died.
I felt my stomach twist.
Daniel noticed my expression.
“Now you understand why your mother's attorney has been so eager to keep you away from the bank.””
I wanted to dismiss it as another lie.
But I couldn't ignore the evidence.
“Why would Rebecca steal from my mother?””
“Perhaps she didn't. Perhaps she was paid to protect the truth. Or perhaps she was paid to bury it.””
Ava lifted her head.
“Mommy?””
I kissed her hair.
“Yes, sweetheart?””
“Grandma said we should always tell the truth, even when we're scared.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“She was right.””
Ava looked at Daniel.
“Then why does he keep lying?””
For the first time, Daniel had no answer.
The silence lasted only a second before Michael moved.
He drove his elbow into the guard's ribs, seized the man's wrist, and knocked the gun from his hand.
A shot exploded into the ceiling.
Everyone screamed.
Michael tackled the guard and shouted, “Claire, run!””
I grabbed Ava and raced toward the hallway.
Lily followed.
Behind us, Daniel roared, “Stop them!””
We reached the back door just as another guard emerged from the kitchen.
Lily grabbed a heavy brass lamp and swung it into his shoulder.
He stumbled.
“Go!”” she shouted.
I ran into the garden, Ava clinging to me.
The night air was cold. Bare branches scraped against the windows, and gravel cut through the soles of my shoes.
Then headlights flooded the driveway.
A black SUV came skidding through the gate.
The driver's door flew open.
Vanessa jumped out.
“Get in!””
I hesitated.
She looked toward the mansion.
“Claire, I know you hate me. You can hate me for the rest of your life. But if you stay here, Daniel will kill all of us.””
Lily reached us, breathing hard.
“She's telling the truth.””
I climbed into the SUV.
Vanessa slammed the door and accelerated down the driveway.
For several minutes, none of us spoke.
Then I turned toward her.
“Where are we going?””
“To the only person who knows which baby left the hospital wearing the wrong bracelet.””
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at Ava in my arms.
“My mother.””
I stared at her.
“Your mother is alive?””
Vanessa nodded.
“And she has been waiting twenty-five years for this night.””
She reached into the glove compartment and handed me a sealed envelope.
Inside was a photograph of two newborn babies lying side by side.
One wore a pink bracelet.
The other wore a blue one.
On the back, someone had written:
*Baby A was never meant to leave with Evelyn Hart.*
Beneath that sentence was a name.
*Claire Cross.*
I stared at the photograph until the letters blurred.
Then Vanessa whispered the words that changed everything.
“Claire, the woman who raised you didn't steal you from your mother.””
May you like
She looked at me through the rearview mirror.
“She was paid to take you.””
