Chapter 9: Only One Daughter Can Inherit
The first gunshot was followed by a scream.
Harold Jenkins dropped behind his desk. Lily pulled me to the floor, knocking the folders from my hands.
Glass rained across the office carpet.
“Stay down!”” she shouted.
I pressed my palms over my ears.
Through the open doorway, I heard boots pounding across the lobby and a man's voice barking orders.
“Find the two women! Leave the staff alone!””
Lily's grip tightened around my wrist.
“We need to get to the vault corridor.””
“Why would that help?””
“Because the corridor has a second exit.””
“How do you know?””
She looked at me.
“Because I was here last week.””
I stared at her.
“You knew the box was here?””
“I knew something was here. I didn't know what.””
A second shot rang out.
Jenkins crawled toward us, blood trickling from a cut above his eyebrow.
“There's a service passage behind the filing cabinet,” he whispered.
“Take it. It leads to the underground garage.””
Lily helped him sit against the wall.
“Come with us.””
He shook his head.
“I'll slow you down. Go.””
I grabbed the folders and stuffed them into my bag.
Lily pulled the filing cabinet aside, revealing a narrow door. We slipped through and hurried down a dim concrete passage that smelled of dust and damp stone.
Behind us, a voice shouted my name.
“Claire!””
I stopped.
It was Michael.
Lily caught my arm.
“Don't.””
“That's my ex-husband.””
“That's the man who helped Daniel move the money.””
“He also knows where my daughter is.””
She stared at me.
“Then you should understand why you can't trust him.””
We reached the garage just as a black sedan screeched around the corner.
The driver's window lowered.
Michael leaned across the passenger seat.
“Get in!””
Lily pulled me back.
“It's a trap!””
Michael slammed his hand against the steering wheel.
“Claire, I have Ava!””
Every thought in my head disappeared.
“Where is she?””
“She's safe. But you need to come with me now.””
Lily stepped forward.
“If you have Ava, prove it.””
Michael raised his phone.
A video played.
Ava sat on a sofa in an unfamiliar room, clutching her stuffed rabbit. Her cheeks were wet, and she kept looking toward someone outside the frame.
“Mommy?”” she cried.
I lunged toward the car.
Lily held me back.
“Wait!””
The video ended.
Michael's face was pale.
“Daniel took her from the temporary guardian's house. I tracked the car to a property outside the city. He's demanding the original documents in exchange for her.””
“Why didn't you call the police?””
“Because he has people inside the department. The same people who filed the fake custody order.””
I stared at him.
“Where is he keeping her?””
“An old estate north of town. I can take you there.””
Lily shook her head.
“No. He's trying to get both of us in one place.””
Michael looked at her.
“Lily, if you don't come, he'll kill Ava.””
Her expression crumpled.
I climbed into the car.
“Drive.””
Lily hesitated for half a second before getting in beside me.
Michael accelerated out of the garage.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
I clutched the folders against my chest.
Finally, I turned toward Lily.
“Why did you come to the bank last week?””
She stared out the window.
“Because I received a letter from Evelyn.””
“Your adoptive records say she was my mother.””
“She was your mother in every way that mattered.””
“That's not what I asked.””
Lily sighed.
“Daniel told me that Evelyn had stolen a fortune from our family. He said she had hidden the money in a trust and that I was entitled to it because I was the eldest surviving daughter.””
“Surviving?””
“He told me you had died as a child.””
I looked at her.
“So you believed him.””
“For most of my life.””
“Then why come here?””
“Because the letter included a photograph of you.””
She reached into her coat and produced a small picture.
It showed me holding Ava outside her kindergarten.
The date was two years earlier.
“Daniel had been watching you,” Lily said.
“He wanted me to confirm that you were alive and locate the violin. He said he would give me the truth about our mother if I helped him.””
I stared at the photograph.
“He used you.””
“Yes.””
“And you helped him?””
“I gave him your address.””
The admission landed heavily between us.
I moved away from her.
“Do you understand what you've done?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I didn't know he planned to hurt you. I thought he wanted the documents so he could prove Evelyn had stolen the money.””
“You gave the man who raised you the location of my daughter.””
“I know.””
For the first time, I saw the child beneath the adult. A girl who had grown up with a father who controlled her history, her relationships, and every explanation of the world around her.
I still couldn't forgive her.
But I understood how Daniel had made us both his instruments.
Michael spoke from the front seat.
“We're almost there.””
I looked through the windshield.
An iron gate appeared ahead, flanked by stone pillars and security cameras.
Beyond it stood a sprawling mansion surrounded by bare trees.
The gate opened before Michael reached it.
He drove through.
A man in a dark suit waited beside the front entrance.
Daniel.
He looked older than he had in the photograph, but his eyes were unmistakable.
He smiled when he saw us.
“Both my daughters,” he said.
“Together at last.””
I stepped out of the car.
“Where is Ava?””
Daniel gestured toward the house.
“Inside.””
“Let me see her.””
“First, the documents.””
I held up the folders.
“You get these when my daughter is safe.””
Daniel smiled.
“You sound exactly like Margaret.””
“Don't you dare say her name.””
His expression hardened.
“Your mother made a terrible mistake. She thought she could take my children, my money, and my future without consequences.””
“She was trying to protect us.””
“She was trying to destroy me.””
Lily stepped beside me.
“You told me Claire was dead.””
Daniel looked at her with a tenderness that made my stomach turn.
“I was protecting you.””
“You told me our mother abandoned us.””
“She did abandon us.””
“You told me Evelyn stole the trust.””
“She did.””
“You told me Claire had died.””
He said nothing.
Lily's voice broke.
“Was anything you told me true?””
Daniel's expression changed.
“Everything I did was to protect this family.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You threatened a child.””
“I offered her a future.””
“You destroyed my mother's life.””
“Your mother destroyed herself.””
I took a step forward.
“Where is Ava?””
Daniel's smile vanished.
“Bring her out.””
Two men appeared in the doorway.
Between them stood Ava, pale and frightened, with her stuffed rabbit pressed against her chest.
“Mommy!””
I ran toward her.
One of the men blocked my path.
Daniel raised a hand.
“Not yet.””
Ava began crying.
“Mommy, I want to go home!””
I felt something inside me turn to ice.
“Let her go.””
“Give me the original records.””
I held up the folders.
“Take them.””
“Not those. The originals from the violin.””
“They were destroyed.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Don't insult my intelligence.””
“The violin is broken. The documents are in the bank.””
He looked at Lily.
“You told me the violin was intact.””
Lily went pale.
“I thought it was.””
Daniel turned back to me.
“Then you'll have to open the safe-deposit box.””
“We already did.””
His expression changed.
For the first time, he looked genuinely alarmed.
“What did you find?””
I said nothing.
He stepped toward me.
“Claire, listen carefully. The documents prove that one of you was never legally entitled to inherit anything. If those records become public, the trust will be frozen, and your daughter will lose everything.””
“I don't care about the money.””
“Of course you do. Everyone does.””
“No. I care about Ava.””
Daniel's gaze moved toward the doorway.
“Then perhaps you should consider what happens if I decide she isn't worth the trouble.””
Lily stepped forward.
“Leave the child alone.””
Daniel struck her across the face.
She stumbled sideways.
I screamed and rushed toward her, but the guards grabbed my arms.
Daniel adjusted his cuff.
“Your sister has always been emotional. That's why I couldn't trust her with the truth.””
Lily touched her cheek, tears shining in her eyes.
“You killed Margaret.””
The room fell silent.
Daniel stared at her.
“What did you say?””
“You killed our mother. You told me she died in a car accident, but I found the hospital records. She was admitted with injuries consistent with an assault.””
Daniel's face turned cold.
“She was an unstable woman.””
“You killed her!””
He grabbed Lily by the throat and shoved her against the wall.
I screamed.
Ava cried out.
Michael lunged forward, but one of the guards struck him in the stomach.
Daniel released Lily, letting her collapse to the floor.
“Bring the documents,” he ordered.
“Or the child stays here.””
I looked at Ava.
She was trembling so violently that her stuffed rabbit slipped from her hands.
I couldn't let him hurt her.
“Fine,” I whispered.
Daniel smiled.
“Good.””
“But you release Ava first.””
He considered the offer.
Then he nodded to the guard.
The man brought Ava toward me.
I dropped to my knees and wrapped my arms around her.
She buried her face against my neck.
“Mommy, I was scared.””
“I know, sweetheart. I'm here.””
Daniel cleared his throat.
“Now, the documents.””
I stood with Ava in my arms.
Then I looked at Lily.
She was still on the floor, one hand pressed against her throat.
Michael had managed to rise, but a guard held a gun against his back.
And Daniel stood between us and the only exit.
I took the original beneficiary designation from my bag.
“Before I give you anything, I want to know why the document says Margaret Cross is the rightful heir.””
Daniel's smile faded.
“Because she was.””
“Margaret is dead.””
“Yes.””
“Then who inherits the trust?””
He looked at Ava.
“The surviving child.””
I tightened my hold on my daughter.
“Which child?””
Daniel's eyes settled on Lily.
“The one who was never supposed to survive.””
Lily lifted her head.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel reached into his jacket and pulled out a second document.
He unfolded it slowly.
At the top was a medical certificate dated twenty-five years earlier.
Beneath it were two names.
*Claire Hart.*
*Lily Hart.*
And beside each name was a different blood type.
Daniel smiled.
“One of you is not Margaret's daughter.””
I stared at the paper.
Lily's face went white.
Then Daniel delivered the final blow.
“And the DNA test that Evelyn ordered was never meant to identify you, Claire.””
May you like
He pointed at Ava.
“It was meant to prove that the little girl you're holding is not your daughter at all.””
