Chapter 13: The Sin Evelyn Took to Her Grave

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Daniel's final words kept repeating inside my head.

Evelyn was the woman who helped Robert switch the babies.

I looked at the medical records spread across the table, at the bloodstained sleeve of Rebecca's coat, and at Vanessa, who still held the gun with trembling hands.

Then I looked at Lily.

“Tell me you don't believe him.””

My sister swallowed.

“I don't know what to believe anymore.””

The answer hurt more than I expected.

I had spent twenty-five years believing my mother was the one person in the world who would never betray me. She had taught me to ride a bicycle, held me through my first heartbreak, and sat beside my hospital bed when I gave birth to Ava.

Even after her death, I had trusted her letters more than the living people around me.

Now Daniel had found the one weapon that could hurt me more than any gun.

He had made me question the woman I loved most.

Rebecca pressed a hand against her injured shoulder.

“We need to leave. If Daniel knows we have the original records, he'll come here himself next time.””

“Not until you tell me everything,” I said.

She looked at me.

“Claire—”

“No more protecting me. No more deciding what I can handle. My mother is dead, my daughter has been kidnapped, my sister grew up believing I was dead, and a man who may have helped murder our mother is still walking around. Tell me everything you know.””

Rebecca lowered her eyes.

Then she opened her briefcase and removed a thin folder.

“Evelyn came to my office eleven months before she died. She told me she had discovered that the hospital records had been altered. She wanted to correct them.””

“Why didn't she?””

“Because correcting the records would have exposed the trust fraud. She believed Daniel would use the confusion to take Ava from you someday.””

“Why Ava?””

“Because the trust agreement contained a provision protecting Margaret's descendants. If the identities of both daughters were confirmed, the assets would be transferred to a new independent trustee. Daniel would lose his access to the money permanently.””

I looked at Lily.

“So he separated us to keep the trust under his control.””

“Yes. And Evelyn believed he had been doing it for decades.””

I thought of the photograph of Vanessa holding newborn Ava in the hospital.

The old records.

The falsified DNA report.

The mysterious payments.

“Did Evelyn really help switch the babies?””

Rebecca hesitated.

“I don't know.””

“That isn't an answer.””

“It's the only honest one I have.””

She removed another document.

It was a letter addressed to me, written in my mother's handwriting.

I recognized the slant of every letter.

My darling Claire,

If this letter has reached you, then I failed to tell you something while I was alive.

I have spent most of my life trying to repair a terrible mistake. I cannot ask you to forgive me before you understand what I did.

My hands began to shake.

When Margaret gave birth, Robert came to me with a plan. He wanted to change the babies' identities so he could control the inheritance. He told me it was temporary, that no child would be harmed, and that the money would protect both girls.

I believed him.

I stopped reading.

The room seemed to tilt.

Lily sat beside me.

“Keep going,” she whispered.

I forced myself to continue.

By the time I understood what Robert had done, the records had already been changed. Margaret was dead, Daniel had taken one child, and the other was left in my care.

I could have told the police. I should have told the police. But Robert threatened to have you taken away and placed in a home while he fought for custody. He had friends in the courts, money in the banks, and people who owed him favors.

I chose silence because I was afraid of losing you.

Tears blurred the page.

That was my greatest mistake. I told myself I was protecting you, but I was also protecting myself from the consequences of what I had allowed.

I loved you as my daughter from the first day I held you. That love was never a lie.

But the truth was yours, and I had no right to keep it from you.

The letter ended with a sentence that nearly broke me.

Please don't spend the rest of your life believing you were loved because someone chose you. You were loved because you were you.

I folded the letter against my chest.

For a long time, I couldn't speak.

Then Lily placed her hand over mine.

“She made a terrible choice,” she said quietly.

“But she also raised you. Both things can be true.””

I looked at my sister.

“Do you think she knew you were alive?””

“Maybe. Maybe not. But I know what it feels like to grow up inside somebody else's lie.””

Her eyes filled.

“I hated you for years, Claire. I thought you had abandoned me. Daniel showed me photographs of you growing up, and he told me you were the reason our mother died.””

My breath caught.

“He showed you photographs of me?””

“Every birthday. Every Christmas. He said you had a perfect life while I was left with nothing.””

She wiped her cheek.

“I built an entire life around hating someone who had never even known I existed.””

I took her hand.

“I never knew about you.””

“I know that now.””

For the first time since we had met, she leaned against me.

We sat together until Rebecca's phone vibrated.

She read the message, and her expression hardened.

“What is it?”” I asked.

“The police have received a report that Michael Hart was found at Daniel's estate with evidence of the attempted kidnapping.””

“That makes no sense. Michael was helping us escape.””

“Daniel is framing him.””

I stood.

“Then we go to the police.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“We need the original recording first. It contains evidence of the financial fraud and the threat against Margaret. Without it, Daniel can claim the rest of the documents are forged.””

Vanessa looked up.

“I know where he took it.””

We turned toward her.

She placed the gun on the table.

“Daniel keeps a private archive beneath the estate. He stores the original documents there, along with recordings of everyone he's ever blackmailed.””

“Why would you know that?”” Lily asked.

“Because he made me deliver files there for years.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I helped him. I won't pretend otherwise. I gave him information about your apartment.

I helped him find the violin. I believed he would leave Ava alone once he got the documents.””

Her voice cracked.

“He never intended to leave her alone.””

“No,” I said.

“He didn't.””

“I can't undo what I did. But I can help you end it.””

Rebecca studied her.

“The archive is likely guarded.””

“I know the security system.””

“And Daniel?””

“He'll be at the estate until morning. He's waiting for us to surrender.””

Lily stood.

“Then we'll go tonight.””

I looked at Ava, who was asleep on two chairs pushed together.

“No,” I said.

“Ava stays somewhere safe.””

Rebecca nodded.

“I'll take her to a protected location and contact the authorities. I'll also arrange for a forensic examiner to authenticate the medical records.””

I kissed Ava's forehead.

“Mommy will be back soon, sweetheart.””

She stirred but didn't wake.

Then I turned to Vanessa.

“One thing first. Why did you break Ava's violin?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel told me the documents were hidden inside. He said if I didn't retrieve them, he would take away everything I had. I thought I could open the violin carefully and repair it before Ava noticed.””

“You smashed it.””

“I panicked.””

“You destroyed the last thing my mother left me.””

“I know.””

She didn't defend herself.

For the first time, I believed she understood the damage she had caused.

But understanding wasn't forgiveness.

“Help us stop Daniel,” I said.

“After that, you'll answer for what you've done.””

She nodded.

We left the archives shortly before midnight.

As we approached the estate, the mansion stood dark against the trees. Only one light shone from the upper floor.

Vanessa led us around the side of the property to a maintenance entrance hidden behind a stone wall.

She entered a code.

The lock clicked.

Inside, a narrow staircase descended into the basement.

At the bottom stood a steel door.

Vanessa entered another code.

The door opened onto a room filled with filing cabinets, computers, and shelves of sealed boxes.

I found the recorder within minutes.

It lay beside a stack of old financial ledgers.

But underneath it was a document that made my blood run cold.

A signed statement from a hospital administrator.

It named the person who had paid for the original switch.

Not Robert.

Not Daniel.

Evelyn Hart.

I stared at the signature.

It matched the signature on the letter in my hand.

Lily whispered, “Claire?””

Before I could answer, a voice came from the doorway.

“You finally found it.””

May you like

Daniel stood behind us, holding a gun.

“And now,” he said, “you'll learn why your mother paid to separate you from your sister.””
