Chapter 3: The Shadow
Nobody moved.
The sound came again.
A soft scrape.
Like a shoe shifting against the floor.
Marcus slowly turned toward the hallway.
Denise grabbed his arm.
“Marcus.””
He didn't look at her.
“Stay here.””
Jordan's eyes were fixed on the darkness.
Maya lowered her phone.
Tiana was staring at the same door.
Her face had gone completely white.
Marcus noticed.
“Tiana.””
She didn't answer.
“Tiana, look at me.””
Her eyes stayed on the hallway.
Marcus stepped toward her.
“Who is back there?””
Tiana finally whispered, “I don't know.””
Jordan gave a short, disbelieving laugh.
“You just told someone, ‘Is this what you wanted.’”
“I was scared!””
“Of who?””
Tiana's mouth trembled.
“I can't tell you.””
Marcus stopped.
“Why not?””
Tiana looked at him.
“Because they said you'd blame me.””
Denise's face tightened.
“Who said that?””
Tiana said nothing.
Maya stepped forward.
“Was it someone in this house?””
Tiana looked at her.
That was enough.
Maya's eyes widened.
“Dad…”
Marcus raised a hand.
“Everyone stay where you are.””
He walked toward the hallway.
One step.
Then another.
The penthouse suddenly seemed enormous.
Every shadow looked deeper than it should have.
The city lights behind them flickered against the glass.
Marcus reached the edge of the living room.
“Come out.””
Silence.
His voice hardened.
“I said come out.””
Nothing.
Jordan whispered, “Dad, don't.””
Marcus glanced back.
“Why?””
Jordan swallowed.
“Because Tiana's afraid.””
Tiana snapped her head toward him.
“Don't!””
Jordan stared.
“You are.””
“Stop talking!””
“What are you hiding?””
Tiana's breathing became ragged.
Denise moved between them.
“Both of you, stop.””
Maya looked down at her phone.
“Dad.””
Marcus turned.
Maya was staring at the security footage.
“What?””
She held the phone up.
“The camera caught the hallway.””
Marcus walked back.
Maya scrubbed backward through the footage.
The hallway appeared in the corner of the frame.
Empty.
Then—
a shadow moved.
Maya froze.
“That's not Tiana.””
Marcus leaned over the phone.
The shadow crossed the wall for less than a second.
Then disappeared.
Denise whispered, “Who is that?””
Nobody answered.
Marcus looked at Tiana.
“You knew someone was there.””
Tiana shook her head.
“I didn't know they'd still be here.””
The words landed like a gunshot.
Jordan stared.
“You knew?””
Tiana covered her mouth.
Marcus's expression hardened.
“Still be here?””
Tiana's eyes filled with tears again.
But this time, they weren't dramatic.
They were real.
“I didn't want this to happen.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“What did you do?””
“I didn't do anything.””
“Then tell me who you're protecting.””
Tiana looked toward the hallway.
Her voice dropped to almost nothing.
“They told me if I didn't make Jordan look guilty…”
She stopped.
Maya stepped closer.
“What?””
Tiana shook her head.
“I can't.””
Marcus's patience broke.
“Tiana!””
She flinched.
“I said I can't!””
The half-open door moved.
Just slightly.
Everyone saw it.
Jordan grabbed Maya's arm.
“Someone's coming.””
Marcus turned fully toward the hallway.
The darkness behind the door seemed to breathe.
Then a silhouette appeared.
Only part of a shoulder.
A hand.
A human shape standing just beyond the light.
Denise whispered, “Marcus…”
Marcus raised his voice.
“Who are you?””
The figure didn't answer.
Tiana backed away until she hit the wall.
Her eyes locked on the shadow.
Then she whispered something so quietly that only Maya seemed to hear it.
“No…”
Maya looked at her.
“You know them.””
Tiana shook her head violently.
“No. No, no, no…”
Marcus took another step toward the doorway.
“Come out.””
The shadow moved again.
One slow step forward.
Marcus's face hardened.
Tiana suddenly screamed—
“DON'T LET HIM SEE THE PHONE!””
Maya looked down.
May you like
The red-cased phone was still in her hand.
And behind the half-open door, the stranger finally reached for the handle.
