Chapter 9: The Child in the Photograph
Maya stared at the photograph.
Her fingers trembled.
“Mom…”
Denise looked at it.
The color drained from her face.
“Where did you get that?””
“It was on the floor.””
Denise reached for it.
Maya pulled it away.
“No.””
“Maya.””
“No more secrets.””
Marcus stood nearby, still watching the hallway where Calvin had disappeared.
“She's right.””
Denise looked at him.
Marcus's voice was cold.
“Everything you've told me tonight has been a lie.””
“I was trying to protect our family.””
“From whom?””
Denise looked at Jordan.
“From the people who wanted him.””
Jordan stepped out from behind the sofa.
“Why would anyone want me?””
Denise's eyes filled.
“Because you were never supposed to leave the hospital.””
Jordan froze.
“What?””
Maya looked at the photograph again.
The crib.
The hospital bracelet.
A tiny handwritten name.
*BABY BOY — 4:17 A.M.*
There was no last name.
Maya turned the photograph over.
“What's this?””
A second line had been written beneath the first.
*TRANSFERRED — NO RECORD.*
Darius stepped closer.
“That's not a hospital record.””
Marcus looked at him.
“How do you know?””
“Because I spent years investigating Calvin.””
Darius pointed at the photograph.
“That's the hospital where his first wife died.””
Denise whispered, “She wasn't his wife.””
Everyone turned.
Denise closed her eyes.
“She was my sister.””
Marcus stared.
“Monique?””
Denise nodded.
“She survived the crash. She was pregnant.””
Jordan's face went pale.
“No.””
Maya looked at her mother.
“Pregnant with who?””
Denise looked at Jordan.
“Calvin's child.””
Jordan took a step backward.
Marcus's expression hardened.
“Then why were you holding him?””
Denise started crying.
“Because Monique died after giving birth.””
Darius shook his head.
“That isn't what happened.””
Denise looked at him.
“You weren't there.””
“No.””
Darius pulled out his phone.
“But I found the original hospital log.””
He opened a photograph of an old paper record.
Marcus took the phone.
The handwriting was faded.
But one line was clear.
*Mother: Monique Cole.*
Another line.
*Child: Male.*
Then a third.
*Released to: Denise Carter.*
Marcus stared.
“Carter.””
Denise nodded.
“My maiden name.””
Jordan's breathing became shallow.
“So I'm Monique's son?””
Denise couldn't speak.
Marcus looked at Jordan.
Then at Denise.
“You told me he was ours.””
“I loved him.””
“That wasn't my question.””
“I loved him!””
Denise's voice cracked.
“I couldn't let Calvin take him.””
Jordan shook his head.
“Then why did you let him think I wasn't your son?””
Denise stared.
“I never did.””
Jordan looked confused.
Calvin's voice came from somewhere behind them.
“Yes, she did.””
Everyone spun around.
Calvin stood at the far end of the hallway.
He was holding a gun.
Marcus moved in front of Jordan.
“Drop it.””
Calvin shook his head.
“Not tonight.””
Darius slowly raised his hands.
“Where's Tiana?””
Calvin's eyes flicked toward him.
“Safe.””
“Prove it.””
Calvin pulled out his phone.
A live video appeared.
Tiana sat in a dark room.
Her wrists were free.
She was crying.
“Tiana!”” Jordan shouted.
Her head snapped toward the camera.
“Jordan?””
Calvin smiled.
“Tell them.””
Tiana shook her head.
“No.””
Calvin's smile disappeared.
“Tell them who brought you to me.””
Tiana looked toward the camera.
Then at Calvin.
“I can't.””
“You can.””
Marcus stared at the screen.
“Tiana, listen to me. Where are you?””
Tiana began crying.
“I don't know.””
Calvin grabbed her shoulder.
Jordan stepped forward.
“Don't touch her!””
Calvin laughed.
“You still think you're the hero.””
Darius stared at the video.
“Wait.””
“What?”” Marcus asked.
Darius zoomed in.
Behind Tiana was a window.
Outside it, a red neon sign flickered.
Darius recognized it.
“The Westmore Hotel.””
Calvin's expression changed.
Darius smiled.
“You're still there.””
Calvin raised the gun.
“You won't reach her.””
Maya looked at her phone.
A location pin had appeared.
Someone had sent it.
She whispered, “I know where she is.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Who sent that?””
Maya's face tightened.
“I don't know.””
A message appeared beneath the location.
*BRING JORDAN. COME ALONE.*
Marcus stared at the screen.
Calvin looked at Jordan.
“Exactly.””
Jordan shook his head.
“Why me?””
Calvin lowered the gun slightly.
“Because you're the only thing that can unlock what your mother stole.””
Denise whispered, “No.””
Calvin looked at her.
“You remember the necklace?””
Denise's eyes widened.
Jordan instinctively touched the small chain around his neck.
The necklace his mother had given him when he was five.
Calvin smiled.
“Take it off.””
Jordan didn't move.
Marcus looked at the necklace.
“What is it?””
Denise's voice trembled.
“The key.””
“To what?””
She looked at Jordan.
“To the account your father never knew existed.””
Marcus stared.
“My father?””
Denise nodded.
“Your real father.””
The room fell silent.
Jordan slowly removed the necklace.
A tiny metal pendant hung from it.
He opened it.
Inside was a miniature memory card.
Darius whispered, “That's it.””
Calvin raised his gun.
“Give it to me.””
Jordan closed his hand around it.
“No.””
Calvin's face hardened.
“Then Tiana dies.””
Tiana screamed through the phone.
“Jordan, don't!””
Marcus looked at his son.
“Don't give him anything.””
Calvin lifted the gun.
“Choose.””
Jordan looked at Tiana's terrified face.
Then at his father.
Then at the tiny card in his palm.
And suddenly—
the hotel video behind Tiana changed.
A second person entered the room.
Tiana looked up.
Her face transformed from fear into shock.
“Mom?””
Denise went rigid.
The person stepped fully into view.
It was Monique.
May you like
Alive.
And she was pointing a gun directly at Calvin's head.
