Chapter 7: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
Marcus couldn't move.
For eight years, he had attended memorials, signed documents, answered condolences, and watched a coffin disappear beneath the ground.
Now the man who had supposedly been inside it was standing twenty feet away.
Calvin looked older.
Gray threaded through his beard. A thin scar ran from his temple toward his cheek. But the eyes were unmistakable.
Cold.
Patient.
Amused.
Marcus whispered, “Calvin.””
Calvin smiled.
“You always were good with names.””
Denise stepped backward.
“Please.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“You knew.””
Denise shook her head.
“I didn't know he was alive.””
Calvin laughed softly.
“That's not true.””
“Calvin, stop.””
“You knew I survived.””
“I thought you were gone.””
“You visited me.””
Marcus's face hardened.
“You visited him?””
Denise covered her mouth.
Calvin took another step into the room.
“I gave her one simple promise.””
Marcus stared at Denise.
“What promise?””
Calvin answered.
“She promised she'd never tell you.””
Marcus's voice dropped.
“Tell me what?””
Calvin looked at Maya.
“Your daughter has the answer.””
Maya tightened her grip on the phone.
“You're not getting this.””
Calvin's smile disappeared.
“You don't understand what you're holding.””
“I understand enough.””
“No. You don't.””
Jordan moved beside Maya.
Calvin looked at him.
“You've spent your whole life believing your father built this family.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Don't talk to my son.””
Calvin ignored him.
“Your father didn't build anything.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“He stole it.””
The room fell silent.
Denise whispered, “Calvin…”
“You want the truth?”” Calvin asked.
“Fine.””
He looked at Marcus.
“Your company was never yours.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You're lying.””
“Your father and I built it together.””
“That was forty years ago.””
“And when he died, he left half of it to me.””
Marcus stared.
“He left me everything.””
Calvin laughed.
“That's what the lawyers told you.””
Darius suddenly stepped forward.
“Because you forged the second set of documents.””
Calvin's eyes moved toward him.
“You.””
Darius didn't flinch.
“You've been looking for that drive for years.””
“And you've been very difficult to kill.””
Marcus looked between them.
“What is on that drive?””
Darius answered.
“Proof that Calvin used shell companies to move money out of Marcus's business.””
Calvin smiled.
“And proof that Marcus helped.””
Marcus's face went pale.
“I never did that.””
Darius looked at him.
“I know.””
Calvin's smile returned.
“Do you?””
Marcus stepped toward him.
“You've been framing me.””
“Not me.””
Calvin pointed toward Denise.
“She did.””
Denise began shaking her head.
“No.””
Calvin looked at her.
“Tell him.””
Marcus turned.
“Denise?””
She couldn't meet his eyes.
Calvin continued.
“Three nights ago, she met me in secret.””
Marcus stared at his wife.
“Why?””
Denise's voice broke.
“Because he had Tiana.””
Jordan froze.
“What?””
Denise covered her face.
Calvin nodded.
“Tiana wasn't supposed to be hurt.””
Jordan looked at Tiana's empty place.
“Where is she?””
Calvin smiled.
“Safe.””
“Where?””
“Somewhere your father can't reach.””
Jordan stepped forward.
Marcus caught his shoulder.
“Jordan, no.””
Jordan pulled away.
“She helped you!””
Calvin's eyes narrowed.
“She made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
Calvin looked at Maya.
“She told Jordan the truth.””
Maya's eyes widened.
“What truth?””
Calvin's gaze settled on Marcus.
“That Jordan isn't your son.””
The silence was absolute.
Marcus's hand slowly fell from Jordan's shoulder.
Jordan stared at Calvin.
“What?””
Denise gasped.
“Don't.””
Calvin smiled.
“Ask your mother.””
Jordan turned toward Denise.
“Mom?””
Denise was crying now.
“Jordan…”
“Mom, what is he talking about?””
Marcus looked at Denise.
His voice was barely audible.
“Tell me he's lying.””
Denise closed her eyes.
Calvin stepped backward.
“Tomorrow morning, the truth goes public.””
Marcus's eyes snapped toward him.
“What truth?””
Calvin smiled.
“All of it.””
Then every phone in the room vibrated at once.
Maya looked down.
A video had been sent.
The thumbnail showed Tiana sitting alone in a dark room.
