Chapter 4: The Truth Buried Six Years Ago
Daniel did not move.
He couldn’t.
The room had become a place where every person was holding a different version of reality, and he was the only one who had never been given the full story.
Marcus stood near the doorway.
Vanessa stood near the kitchen counter.
Eleanor stood beside the table with the old letter in Daniel’s hands.
And Daniel?
Daniel stood in the middle of it all, realizing the woman he trusted, the people connected to his wife, and even the memories of his own marriage were suddenly filled with questions.
He looked at Marcus.
“You knew about the letter?””
Marcus swallowed.
“No.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“You just said Vanessa told you I would never see it.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Then away.
“That’s not what I meant.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Then what did you mean?””
Marcus said nothing.
Daniel’s voice became sharper.
“Answer me.””
The children were still upstairs.
That was the only thing keeping him from losing control.
He lowered his voice.
“My children are in this house. My family is being torn apart. So everyone is going to stop protecting secrets.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Eleanor looked at Marcus.
“Tell him.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
Eleanor’s expression hardened.
“You owe him the truth.””
Marcus looked exhausted.
“You don’t understand what happens when the truth comes out.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Something tells me I’m the only person here who doesn’t know what happens.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, please.””
He turned toward her.
“No.””
The word was quiet.
But it carried more pain than anger.
“You don’t get to say please anymore.””
Her eyes filled.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Then why does protecting me always look like lying to me?””
Vanessa looked down.
She had no answer.
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
“Tell me everything.””
Eleanor took a deep breath.
“Six years ago, Myra called me.””
Daniel froze.
“Myra called you?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“The night before the accident.””
The kitchen suddenly felt colder.
Daniel remembered that night.
He remembered Myra leaving the house after an argument.
Not a big argument.
A normal one.
The kind couples have and forget.
She had kissed Lily goodnight.
She had hugged Noah.
She had told Daniel she would be back soon.
She never came home.
“I thought she was going to her friend’s house,” Daniel whispered.
Eleanor looked at him.
“She wasn’t.””
Daniel’s eyes lifted.
“Where was she going?””
Eleanor hesitated.
“To meet Vanessa.””
The silence that followed was unbearable.
Daniel turned slowly.
Vanessa’s face went white.
“No.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You met my wife that night?””
Vanessa’s lips parted.
“I…”
“Did you?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer destroyed the last piece of trust Daniel was holding onto.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked like she wanted to speak.
But no words came.
Eleanor answered for her.
“Because Myra had discovered something.””
“What?””
“She discovered Vanessa had been using her.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“That’s not true.””
Eleanor ignored her.
“Myra believed Vanessa became close to her because she wanted access to your family.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Access?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“Not until I understand.””
Eleanor continued.
“Vanessa knew Myra was struggling after Noah was born. She knew Myra was overwhelmed. She knew Myra needed help.””
Daniel frowned.
“What does that have to do with anything?””
“She used that weakness.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Stop.””
Eleanor looked at Daniel.
“She slowly convinced Myra that she was her only friend.””
Daniel remembered.
He remembered Vanessa appearing after Noah’s birth.
Always available.
Always helpful.
Always there.
At the time, he thought it was kindness.
Now he didn’t know.
“She helped with the children,” Daniel said.
Eleanor nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“That was what Myra wanted to know.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Why?””
Vanessa’s voice was barely audible.
“Because I cared about them.””
“Then why did Myra think differently?””
Vanessa looked away.
No answer.
Daniel walked toward the table and picked up the custody papers again.
His eyes moved over the names.
Lily.
Noah.
Vanessa.
“Were you planning to take my children?””
Vanessa looked horrified.
“No.””
“Then why is your name on this?””
“I didn’t file it.””
“Then why hide it?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Marcus finally spoke.
“Because she was scared.””
Everyone looked at him.
Daniel stared.
“Scared of what?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Then at Daniel.
“Scared that you would find out why Myra died.””
Daniel’s heart stopped.
The room went silent.
Even Vanessa looked shocked.
“You weren’t supposed to say that,” she whispered.
Daniel turned.
“What did you just say?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
He knew he had crossed a line.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
Daniel stepped toward him.
“You said why Myra died.””
Marcus looked away.
“Because that’s what this is really about.””
Daniel’s hands curled into fists.
“My wife died in a car accident.””
“That’s what you were told.””
The words hit him.
Hard.
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Eleanor looked down.
Marcus looked ashamed.
Vanessa started crying.
Daniel looked at all of them.
“No.””
His voice became louder.
“No, you don’t get to stand here and rewrite six years of my life.””
He pointed at the door.
“My wife died. I buried her. I raised my children alone. I watched them cry for a mother they would never see again.””
His voice broke.
“And now you’re telling me everyone knew something I didn’t?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew.
They did.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“You knew.””
She whispered:
“Yes.””
The answer was almost impossible to hear.
Daniel stared.
“You knew Myra’s death wasn’t what I thought?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“I knew there were questions.””
“Questions?””
“You think I wanted this?””
Daniel stepped back.
“I don’t know what you wanted anymore.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I loved you.””
The sentence hung in the room.
Daniel looked away.
Because he wanted to believe it.
And that made it hurt worse.
“You loved me while hiding my wife’s secrets?””
“I was trying to fix what happened.””
“What happened?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“I made a mistake.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What mistake?””
She didn’t answer.
Eleanor suddenly spoke.
“She didn’t just make a mistake.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“Don’t.””
Eleanor continued.
“She made a choice.””
Daniel turned.
“What choice?””
Before Eleanor could answer, a loud crash came from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
“Lily?””
Daniel ran toward the hallway.
The others followed.
When he reached the bedroom, the door was open.
The room was empty.
The window was unlocked.
Daniel’s blood went cold.
“No.””
On the floor was Lily’s stuffed animal.
Beside it was a folded piece of paper.
Daniel picked it up.
His hands shook as he opened it.
Only one sentence was written.
I know what happened to your mother.
Daniel looked up.
A second line was written underneath.
Meet me alone if you want to see your daughter again.
The paper slipped slightly in his hand.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Eleanor whispered:
“Oh no.””
Daniel looked at them.
“Who took Lily?””
Nobody answered.
Then his phone rang.
An unknown number.
Daniel stared at the screen.
The call continued.
One ring.
Two.
Three.
He answered.
“Who is this?””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a woman’s voice spoke.
A voice Daniel had not heard in six years.
A voice that should have been impossible.
“Daniel…”
His face went pale.
The phone nearly fell from his hand.
May you like
Because the woman on the other end said the one thing that changed everything.
“I’m sorry I let you believe I was dead.””
