Chapter 9: The Man Who Was Never Supposed to Return

The door handle moved again.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Whoever was outside wasn’t trying to break in.

They were confident.

They knew the door would eventually open.

Daniel felt Lily’s fingers wrap around his hand.

Small.

Shaking.

He looked down at her.

“Go upstairs with Noah.””

Lily looked terrified.

“But Daddy—”

“Now.””

She nodded.

Noah grabbed her hand.

The two children moved toward the stairs, but Lily kept looking back.

Daniel hated that.

He hated that his daughter had learned fear before she learned trust.

Behind him, Richard stood frozen.

“You said he was dead.””

Eleanor looked at her husband.

“I thought he was.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“You knew.””

Eleanor looked away.

Daniel noticed.

Another secret.

Another crack.

“Everyone stop.””

His voice cut through the room.

“I don’t care who is outside.””

He looked at every person there.

“I don’t care who lied first.””

Then he pointed toward the door.

“My children are upstairs, and I am done letting people make decisions about their lives.””

The handle stopped moving.

Silence.

Then a voice came from the other side.

“Daniel.””

His blood went cold.

Because the voice wasn’t angry.

It wasn’t threatening.

It sounded familiar.

Like someone who had known him for years.

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You know him.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

“Who is he?””

Before Vanessa could answer, the door opened.

Not forced.

Not broken.

Opened.

The man stepped inside.

He looked to be in his early forties.

Tall.

Calm.

Expensive coat.

A face that carried pieces of someone Daniel recognized.

The eyes.

The expression.

The quiet confidence.

Richard stepped back.

“Ethan.””

Daniel froze.

The man looked at Richard.

“Hello, Father.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel stared.

Ethan.

The name from the documents.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

The man whose name had been erased.

The man connected to Lily.

“You’re alive.””

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“Yes.””

Daniel felt anger rise.

“You have any idea how many people I thought I lost?””

Ethan’s expression changed slightly.

“I know.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You don’t know.””

His voice shook.

“You don’t know what it’s like to tell a child her mother isn’t coming back.””

Ethan looked upstairs.

At the room where Lily had disappeared moments earlier.

“I know more than you think.””

Daniel stared.

“Why are you here?””

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

And Vanessa looked terrified.

“I came for my daughter.””

Daniel immediately moved.

“You’re not taking her.””

Ethan looked at him.

“I didn’t come to take her from you.””

“Then why?””

“Because someone else will.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Vanessa.

“You told him?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Not everything.””

Ethan gave a sad smile.

“Of course not.””

Daniel looked between them.

“You two know each other.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Ethan walked farther into the house.

“Vanessa was my sister’s friend.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Myra?””

Ethan nodded.

“But she became something else.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“Don’t.””

Ethan ignored her.

“She became the person who knew too much.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan looked at him.

“It means six years ago, Myra discovered I was alive.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Ethan continued.

“Myra found out the accident that killed her brother was connected to people who wanted Lily.””

Daniel looked at him.

“But you were the father.””

“Yes.””

“Why would anyone want Lily?””

Ethan looked upstairs.

“Because Lily is the only person who can expose them.””

Daniel felt confused.

“Expose who?””

Ethan reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small flash drive.

“This.””

Daniel looked at it.

“What is it?””

“The evidence Myra found.””

Richard stepped forward.

“You shouldn’t have brought that here.””

Ethan looked at him.

“I had no choice.””

Daniel noticed something.

Richard wasn’t afraid of Ethan.

He was afraid of the flash drive.

“What’s on it?””

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

“Ask her.””

Daniel turned.

Vanessa looked like she might collapse.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

He walked toward her.

“What is on it?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“The truth about Ethan’s death.””

“And?””

She swallowed.

“The truth about Myra’s accident.””

Daniel stared.

“Who caused it?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I don’t know.””

Ethan interrupted.

“I do.””

Everyone looked at him.

Ethan’s voice became quiet.

“The same person who created the custody documents.””

Daniel remembered the papers.

The signature.

The lies.

“The person who wanted Lily.””

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Ethan looked at Richard.

Then Eleanor.

Then Vanessa.

Finally, he looked directly at Daniel.

“It was someone inside Myra’s family.””

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“No.””

Ethan didn’t blink.

“Yes.””

Richard looked furious.

“Don’t.””

Ethan turned.

“You knew.””

Richard’s face changed.

Daniel looked at him.

“What does he mean?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped forward.

“What does he mean?””

Richard looked older suddenly.

Broken.

“I was trying to protect her.””

Daniel felt sick.

Again.

That sentence.

“Protect who?””

Richard looked upstairs.

“Lily.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Richard’s voice cracked.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Richard sat down slowly.

“Myra’s brother wasn’t the only one who discovered the truth.””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“What truth?””

Richard looked at Vanessa.

“Ethan wasn’t supposed to be alive.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Richard continued.

“The night of the accident, someone tried to erase Ethan and Myra from the picture.””

Ethan nodded.

“They thought they succeeded.””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“How did you survive?””

Ethan’s face changed.

“Because Myra saved me.””

The room became silent.

Daniel whispered:

“Myra saved you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she come home?””

Ethan looked down.

“Because she saw who tried to kill us.””

Daniel’s heart raced.

“Who?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

He looked toward Vanessa.

And Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel noticed.

“You know.””

Vanessa cried.

“I know who started it.””

“Who?””

Her voice broke.

“Myra’s father.””

Richard stood suddenly.

“Enough.””

Everyone turned.

Ethan looked at him.

“It’s time.””

Richard’s face twisted with anger.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

Daniel stared at Richard.

“What did you do?””

Richard said nothing.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What did you do?””

Richard looked at the stairs.

At Lily.

Then whispered:

“I was trying to get my granddaughter back.””

Daniel felt a terrible realization.

“The custody papers.””

Richard nodded.

“I created them.””

The room went silent.

Daniel’s face changed.

“You forged Myra’s signature.””

Richard didn’t deny it.

“I knew the court would listen if they thought she was involved.””

Daniel stared.

“You used my dead wife’s name.””

Richard’s eyes filled.

“I had no other way.””

“No other way?””

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“You terrified my children.””

Richard looked ashamed.

“I never wanted that.””

“Then why?””

Richard looked at Ethan.

Then at Lily’s room.

“Because the person who wanted Lily wasn’t me.””

Daniel froze.

Richard whispered:

“He is still coming.””

A sudden sound interrupted him.

A car engine.

Outside.

Another vehicle.

Everyone turned toward the window.

A second black SUV had arrived.

Ethan’s expression changed.

“He found us.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Who?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Because the front door opened.

And a woman stepped inside.

An older woman.

Calm.

Elegant.

Someone Daniel had never seen before.

But Vanessa recognized her immediately.

Vanessa backed away.

“No.””

The woman smiled.

“Hello, Vanessa.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked toward Lily’s room.

Then smiled.

“I’m the person who has been protecting this family from the beginning.””

Ethan’s face went pale.

“That’s impossible.””

The woman tilted her head.

“Oh, Ethan.””

She smiled.

“You were always so easy to fool.””

Daniel felt a chill.

Because the woman reached into her purse.

Not for a weapon.

For a document.

She placed it on the table.

A birth certificate.

A different one.

With a different name.

A different mother.

A different truth.

Then she looked at Daniel.

“Before you decide who deserves Lily…”

She smiled.

“You should know something.””

Daniel stared at the document.

The woman whispered:

“Myra never gave birth to her.””

And upstairs, Lily screamed.

“Daddy!””

Daniel ran toward the stairs.

But before he reached them, the woman said one final sentence.

“The girl you raised…”

May you like

A pause.

“…was never the child you thought she was.””
