Chapter 7: The Child Who Was Never Supposed to Be Found

Daniel stared at the message until the screen dimmed.

The words remained burned into his mind.

Do not trust Vanessa.

She is not the only one who knows Lily’s real identity.

His thumb hovered over the screen.

He wanted to call Myra.

He wanted answers.

He wanted to hear her voice again.

But something stopped him.

A question.

One that had been growing with every secret.

Why had everyone been protecting a truth about his daughter?

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

“Explain.””

Nobody moved.

Vanessa looked at him.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“I’m done asking nicely.””

He looked at Marcus.

“You said Lily’s birth certificate was changed.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“Because Myra asked us to.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Us?””

He turned toward Vanessa.

“You too?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.””

The answer hit harder than he expected.

Daniel stepped away.

“You changed my daughter’s records?””

“We were protecting her.””

“You keep using that word.””

His voice rose.

“Protecting. Protecting. Protecting.””

He pointed toward the upstairs hallway.

“My daughter was crying because she thought she was unwanted.””

Nobody spoke.

“You locked food away from my children.””

Vanessa flinched.

“And now I find out everyone has been hiding the truth about Lily.””

His eyes filled with anger.

“What exactly were you protecting her from?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“Someone who wanted to take her.””

“Who?””

She looked at Eleanor.

Eleanor slowly sat down.

“My son.””

Daniel froze.

“Myra’s father?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Lily’s grandfather.””

The words sounded impossible.

“Why would he want Lily?””

Eleanor looked toward the floor.

“Because he believed Lily belonged to our family.””

Daniel stared.

“She is my daughter.””

“Yes.””

Eleanor looked at him.

“But there are things you don’t know.””

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“Then tell me.””

Eleanor was silent for a moment.

Then she reached into her folder.

She pulled out a small envelope.

It was old.

The paper was worn.

But unlike the other documents, this one had Daniel’s name written on it.

“What is that?””

“Something Myra left behind.””

Daniel took it.

His hands shook.

“Why didn’t I get this?””

“Because Myra didn’t want you to.””

The answer hurt.

Again.

Every secret seemed to have Myra’s name attached to it.

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a hospital document.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

Patient Name:

Myra Whitmore Carter.

Child:

Lily Anne Whitmore.

Daniel looked up.

His face changed.

“Whitmore?””

Nobody spoke.

He looked back down.

The name was there.

Not Carter.

Whitmore.

His daughter’s last name had never been what he thought.

“What is this?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

He held up the paper.

“Why does this say Whitmore?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Because Lily was born before we were married.””

Daniel looked confused.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

Marcus sighed.

“Because Lily wasn’t supposed to be connected to you.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What are you saying?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then:

“Myra was hiding Lily’s biological father.””

The room went silent.

Daniel felt like he couldn’t hear properly.

“No.””

Marcus looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You’re wrong.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel…”

He turned toward her.

“Tell me he’s wrong.””

She didn’t.

That was the answer.

Daniel stepped back.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I raised her.””

Nobody interrupted.

“I was there when she took her first steps.””

His eyes filled.

“I stayed awake when she had nightmares.””

He looked at the paper.

“I taught her how to ride a bike.””

His breathing became uneven.

“She calls me Daddy.””

Vanessa began crying.

“Daniel, she loves you.””

“Then why did everyone keep this from me?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was obvious.

They had been afraid.

But Daniel no longer cared about their fear.

He cared about the little girl upstairs.

The girl who thought she was losing everyone.

“Who is her father?””

The question finally came.

And everyone looked at Eleanor.

Eleanor’s face changed.

“Daniel…”

“Who?””

She closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“My son.””

The room stopped.

Daniel stared.

“Your son?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Myra’s brother.””

Daniel felt sick.

“No.””

“He was supposed to marry someone else. He had a different life.””

“What happened?””

Eleanor looked away.

“He died.””

Daniel froze.

“He died?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before Lily was born.””

The information came too quickly.

Too many pieces.

Too many broken parts.

Daniel grabbed the edge of the table.

“So Lily’s father was dead?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because of what happened after.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“What happened after?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Myra found out her brother’s death wasn’t an accident.””

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“What?””

Eleanor’s expression became painful.

“She believed someone killed him.””

Daniel looked around.

“Who?””

No one answered.

Then Noah appeared again.

This time, he was crying.

“Daddy.””

Daniel immediately went to him.

“What’s wrong?””

Noah pointed toward the front door.

“There’s someone outside.””

Daniel’s body went tense.

Everyone turned.

A shadow moved behind the glass.

Slowly.

Watching.

Daniel stepped toward the door.

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

“Don’t.””

He looked at her.

“Why?””

Her face was pale.

“Because I know that person.””

Daniel stopped.

“Who?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

The shadow disappeared.

Then the doorbell rang.

One time.

Two times.

Three.

Daniel walked closer.

Eleanor stood.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel looked through the window.

Standing outside was an older man.

Gray hair.

Dark coat.

A face filled with anger.

Eleanor covered her mouth.

“My husband.””

Daniel turned.

“Myra’s father?””

Eleanor nodded.

“But he’s supposed to be…”

“Dead?”” the man said from outside.

Everyone froze.

The front door opened slightly.

The man stood there.

Alive.

Daniel stepped back.

The old man looked directly at him.

Then at the stairs.

Where Lily was hiding.

His eyes filled with emotion.

“My granddaughter.””

Daniel moved between him and the hallway.

“You’re not coming near my children.””

The man smiled sadly.

“You still don’t understand.””

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“Understand what?””

The man reached into his coat.

Daniel tensed.

But he didn’t pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a small photograph.

And placed it on the table.

Daniel looked down.

It was a picture of Myra.

Holding baby Lily.

Standing beside a man Daniel had never seen before.

Except Daniel recognized one thing.

The bracelet on the baby’s wrist.

Lily had worn that same bracelet since she was a baby.

The old man spoke.

“Your wife didn’t hide Lily’s identity because she was afraid of me.””

Daniel looked up.

“Then why?””

The man stared at him.

“Because she was afraid Lily would discover who her real mother was.””

Daniel felt his blood run cold.

“What?””

The man’s eyes moved toward the stairs.

Then back to Daniel.

“Because Myra…”

He paused.

“Was not the woman who gave birth to Lily.””

A sound came from upstairs.

A gasp.

Daniel turned.

Lily stood at the top of the stairs.

She had heard everything.

And she was crying.

“Daddy…”

May you like

Her voice broke.

“Am I not really your daughter?””
