Chapter 2: The Husband Who Wouldn't Answer
Nia's first call to Darius went unanswered.
She stood beside Maya's bed with the phone pressed against her ear, listening to the ringing while Dr. Carter remained near the foot of the bed, the signed refusal form still open in his hands.
One ring.
Two.
Three.
"Darius, pick up," Nia whispered.
The call went to voicemail.
She immediately called again.
This time, the phone rang twice before the call disconnected.
Nia lowered it slowly.
"He declined it.""
Dr. Carter closed the chart halfway.
"Ms. Bennett, I understand that you're upset. I want to make sure we establish exactly what happened before we draw conclusions.""
She turned toward him sharply.
"Conclusions? His name is on the form, Doctor. That's his signature. I've been married to that man for eleven years.""
"I understand.""
"No, you don't."" Her voice rose.
"You don't understand what it feels like to sit here watching your child struggle while somebody you trust makes a decision behind your back.""
Dr. Carter didn't interrupt.
Nia looked at Maya again, forcing herself to lower her voice.
"She was excited about her birthday last month," she said.
"She made me promise we'd bake cupcakes together when she got better. Chocolate ones, because she says vanilla is boring.""
Her mouth trembled.
"She still has the recipe on the refrigerator at home.""
For a moment, the room was quiet except for the monitor.
Then Dr. Carter pulled a chair closer.
"I know this is frightening," he said.
"I'm going to ask our team to review the authorization and the cancellation record. I won't speculate about your husband's intentions without verified information.""
Nia nodded, but her eyes remained fixed on the chart.
"Can you tell me whether he was even here?""
"That is one of the things we're checking.""
Nurse Williams stepped closer, holding a small tablet.
"Doctor, I found the entry in the system," she said.
"The refusal was recorded electronically this morning.""
"Was the authorization verified?"" Dr. Carter asked.
"I'm checking the audit information now.""
Nia seized on the word.
"Audit information? What does that mean?""
"It means we're reviewing the record of how the entry was made," Dr. Carter explained.
"We need to establish who submitted it and what authorization was used.""
Nia's fingers tightened around her phone.
"Then do that. Please.""
Nurse Williams glanced at Maya, then back at the tablet.
"I'll contact the records team.""
She stepped into the hallway, leaving the door open.
Nia stared at the screen of her phone. Darius's name appeared in her contacts beside a photograph taken at Maya's school recital. In it, he was kneeling beside their daughter, one arm around her shoulders. Maya wore a purple dress and a paper crown she had insisted on keeping long after the performance ended.
Darius was smiling at the camera.
Nia remembered the picture being taken.
He had told Maya she was the brightest star on the stage.
She pressed the call button again.
This time, he answered.
"Nia?""
His voice sounded ordinary. Almost bored.
Nia gripped the phone so tightly that her knuckles whitened.
"What did you do?""
Silence.
Then Darius said, "What are you talking about?""
"Don't do that. Don't stand there and pretend you don't know.""
"Nia, I'm at work.""
"You signed a refusal form for Maya's procedure.""
Another silence followed.
It lasted long enough for Nia to hear the faint hum of the hospital ventilation system.
Then Darius exhaled.
"I can explain.""
Nia closed her eyes.
Those three words hurt more than a denial would have.
"You can explain?"" she repeated.
"Our daughter is lying in a hospital bed, Darius. I just found out that someone canceled her procedure, and your name is on the paperwork. What exactly is there to explain?""
"Lower your voice.""
She pulled the phone away from her ear and stared at it.
"Lower my voice?""
"People are around me," he said.
"I can't discuss this right now.""
Nia looked at Maya's face.
Her daughter had no idea that her parents were having this conversation. She couldn't see the phone or hear the words. She lay quietly beneath the white blanket, surrounded by equipment that measured the fragile rhythms of her body.
Nia's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Did you sign that form?""
Darius didn't answer.
"Yes or no.""
"I did what I thought was necessary.""
A cold feeling spread through Nia's chest.
"Necessary for whom?""
"Don't make this harder than it has to be.""
Nia's lips parted, but no sound came out at first.
"You are talking about our child.""
"I know exactly what we're talking about.""
"Then tell me why you refused the procedure.""
"I can't explain everything over the phone.""
"Then come here.""
"I have things I need to handle.""
"Your daughter needs you here!""
Darius lowered his voice.
"Nia, listen to me. Don't sign anything else until we talk.""
She stared at the phone.
The instruction was so unexpected that she almost forgot to breathe.
"What does that mean?""
"I said don't sign anything.""
"Why?""
"I'll call you back.""
"Darius, don't you dare hang up on me—"
The line went dead.
Nia lowered the phone slowly.
For several seconds, she stood completely still.
Then she looked toward Dr. Carter.
"He admitted it," she said.
"He said he did what he thought was necessary.""
Dr. Carter's expression remained serious.
"Did he explain why?""
"No. He told me not to sign anything else.""
The doctor exchanged a brief glance with Nurse Williams, who had returned to the doorway.
Nia noticed it immediately.
"What? Why did you look at each other?""
Dr. Carter placed the chart on the tray.
"We need to finish reviewing the record.""
"That's not an answer.""
"No," he acknowledged.
"It isn't.""
Nurse Williams glanced at her tablet again.
"Doctor, there's another entry attached to the refusal.""
Dr. Carter turned toward her.
"What kind of entry?""
"The system shows an additional authorization document linked to the same submission.""
Nia stepped closer.
"What authorization document?""
Nurse Williams hesitated.
"I haven't opened the full attachment yet.""
"Open it," Nia said.
Dr. Carter raised a hand gently.
"Ms. Bennett, let us verify what the document actually contains before we make assumptions.""
Nia nodded, though her eyes never left the tablet.
Nurse Williams tapped the screen.
Her expression changed.
Then she looked up at Dr. Carter.
"Doctor, this attachment isn't part of the original consent packet.""
Nia felt her stomach tighten.
"What is it?""
Nurse Williams turned the tablet toward Dr. Carter, keeping the screen angled away from the bed.
He read the first few lines.
His face became unreadable.
Then he looked at Nia.
"Ms. Bennett, I need to ask you something important.""
She swallowed.
"What?""
"Before today, did you and your husband ever discuss making changes to Maya's medical authorization?""
Nia shook her head immediately.
"No. Never.""
Dr. Carter glanced down at the document again.
"Then we need to determine why this additional authorization was submitted.""
Nia looked at the phone in her hand, where Darius's unanswered messages remained beneath his name.
Her husband had admitted to signing the refusal.
He had refused to explain it.
And now the hospital had found a second document she had never seen.
"Doctor," she whispered, "what else did my husband sign?""
Nurse Williams slowly scrolled farther down the screen.
Then she stopped.
Her eyes widened.
May you like
And before she could speak, Nia's phone vibrated with a new message from Darius.
Whatever they tell you, don't let them open the sealed envelope.
