Chapter 9: The Money Was Never the Whole Story
Marcus arrived at the hospital shortly after seven that evening.
Nia saw him through the open doorway before he entered. He wore a dark gray suit, but his tie was loosened, and his face looked drawn. He carried no briefcase, no folder, and no phone in his hand.
For once, he looked like a man who had come without a prepared explanation.
Nia stood beside Maya's bed.
"Don't come any closer until you tell me why you handled that account.""
Marcus stopped.
"I understand.""
"No, I don't think you do. My husband signed a refusal for my daughter's procedure. My mother helped deliver the paperwork.
My father says he never authorized any of this. And your name is on the financial records.""
Marcus looked at Maya.
"How is she?""
"She's still being monitored.""
"I'm sorry, Nia.""
"That isn't an answer.""
He lowered his eyes.
"You're right.""
Dr. Carter stood near the counter with Ms. Brooks.
After confirming that Marcus was there to provide information about the documents, Ms. Brooks asked him to explain his role in the financial arrangement.
Marcus pulled out a chair but didn't sit until Nia nodded.
"I helped Darius establish the account because your father wanted to cover Maya's medical expenses," he began.
"The arrangement was supposed to be straightforward. Money would be deposited, bills would be paid, and records would be kept.""
"Then why did the agreement include language about my ability to make decisions?""
Marcus rubbed his hands together.
"That came later.""
"How much later?""
"About two weeks after the account was opened.""
Nia stared at him.
"Who added it?""
"Darius.""
"Did you approve it?""
"No.""
"Did you challenge it?""
Marcus looked away.
"I asked him why it was necessary. He said he was trying to prevent disagreements from delaying Maya's care.""
Nia laughed without humor.
"So he created a document questioning my judgment because he was worried about disagreements?""
"That's what he told me.""
"And you believed him?""
"I believed he was frightened, too.""
Nia took a step toward him.
"We were both frightened. I was the one sitting beside Maya every night. I was the one listening to the doctors explain what could happen if her treatment was delayed. And instead of standing beside me, my husband prepared paperwork to challenge me.""
Marcus swallowed.
"I know how it looks.""
"No. You know what it says. That's different.""
Ms. Brooks placed the original funding agreement on the counter.
"Mr. Reed, can you explain why the later documents reference a different account from the one identified in the original funding agreement?""
Marcus looked at the numbers.
His expression changed.
"That isn't the account I helped establish.""
Dr. Carter stepped closer.
"Can you identify the account listed here?""
Marcus shook his head.
"No.""
Nia stared at him.
"You handled the original account, but you don't recognize the one on the refusal?""
"Correct.""
"Then who opened it?""
Marcus looked at the page again.
"I don't know.""
Ms. Brooks made a note.
"Did you ever authorize money to be transferred from the original account?""
"No. I didn't authorize any transfer.""
Nia's voice became quiet.
"Did Darius?""
Marcus hesitated.
"I know he requested access to the account records.""
"Why?""
"He said he needed to show the hospital that the medical expenses were covered.""
"That sounds reasonable," Nia said.
"So why didn't he just show them the records?""
Marcus looked at her.
"Because the records revealed a problem.""
The room fell silent.
Nia's pulse quickened.
"What problem?""
Marcus took a breath.
"The original account had less money in it than Darius expected.""
"Why?""
"Because your father had placed restrictions on the funds. The money could be used for Maya's documented medical expenses, but it couldn't be withdrawn for unrelated costs.""
Nia stared at him.
"Of course it couldn't. It was for Maya.""
"Yes.""
"So what did Darius want to withdraw it for?""
Marcus pressed his lips together.
"I don't know all the details.""
"Tell me what you do know.""
He looked at Ms. Brooks, then Dr. Carter.
"I saw a request for a transfer to a separate account. It was marked as an administrative expense associated with the care arrangement.""
Nia's stomach tightened.
"How much?""
Marcus told her.
The amount was large enough to cover several months of household expenses.
Nia gripped the bed rail.
"That money was supposed to pay for Maya's treatment.""
"I know.""
"And Darius tried to move it?""
"Yes.""
"Did you stop him?""
"I questioned the request.""
"That's not what I asked.""
Marcus looked down.
"I didn't have the authority to stop every transaction. I reported the discrepancy to the bank and asked for a review.""
Nia stared at him.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because Darius said he would explain it to you himself.""
She shook her head slowly.
"Everybody in this family kept waiting for Darius to explain. Meanwhile, he was making decisions about my daughter without telling me.""
Marcus had no defense.
Ms. Brooks gathered the documents into a neat stack.
"This information needs to be verified against the bank's records. We should not draw a conclusion about the purpose of the transfer until that review is complete.""
Nia nodded, though her eyes remained fixed on Marcus.
"There's one thing I still don't understand. Why did Darius think canceling the procedure would help him?""
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
"I don't think he expected the refusal to become a crisis like this.""
"What did he expect?""
"He believed the additional agreement would give him time to resolve the financial problem before the hospital proceeded with the next step.""
Nia felt cold.
"He used our daughter's treatment as a way to buy time?""
Marcus didn't answer.
She turned toward Dr. Carter.
"Can someone do that? Can a parent simply refuse a procedure because of a financial dispute?""
Dr. Carter's expression remained serious.
"The clinical team must assess the circumstances, the urgency of the procedure, and the applicable consent requirements. We cannot make a blanket statement about every situation. What matters here is that the authorization is being reviewed, and we are assessing Maya's treatment options separately from the financial dispute.""
Nia swallowed.
"Then I want those two things kept separate.""
"That is our goal," he replied.
Ms. Brooks nodded.
"We will document your objection and make sure the authorization review reflects the information you've provided.""
Nia turned back to Marcus.
"What did Darius say when you questioned the transfer?""
Marcus's face tightened.
"He told me he needed the money because there was another obligation he couldn't afford to miss.""
"What obligation?""
"I asked him that. He wouldn't tell me.""
"Did he mention my father?""
"No.""
"Did he mention the agreement?""
"Only that the agreement would protect him if the family disagreed.""
Nia felt the last pieces begin to move together.
Darius had prepared the agreement before Maya was admitted. He had involved Renee as a witness. He had relied on Frank's money to establish the original account, then apparently tried to redirect funds through another account.
When the hospital questioned the refusal, he had warned Nia not to open the envelope.
He had not been acting like a father making a difficult medical decision.
He had been trying to keep a financial arrangement from being examined.
But one question remained.
Why had he believed he needed the power to override Nia?
Nia took out her phone and called him.
He answered almost immediately.
"Marcus is there, isn't he?"" Darius asked.
"Yes.""
"Then you know what happened.""
"I know you tried to move money that was meant for Maya.""
Silence.
"I know you prepared a document questioning whether I could make decisions for our daughter.""
Another silence.
"And I know you canceled her procedure while you were trying to sort out a financial problem.""
Darius exhaled.
"Nia, it wasn't that simple.""
"Then make it simple. Tell me the truth.""
He lowered his voice.
"I needed time.""
"For what?""
"To fix the account.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because you would have panicked.""
Nia closed her eyes.
"You don't get to use my fear as an excuse for lying to me.""
"I was trying to protect the family.""
"From what?""
Darius didn't answer.
Nia opened her eyes and looked at Maya.
"Your daughter is lying here while you hide behind documents and money. If you have a reason for what you did, tell me now.""
His voice cracked.
"I didn't know how else to stop the transfer.""
Nia went still.
"What transfer?""
Darius said nothing.
Then, in the background, she heard a man's voice.
"Mr. Bennett, we need you to come with us.""
Nia's heart jumped.
"Darius? Who is that?""
He whispered, "I have to go.""
"No. Tell me what transfer you were trying to stop.""
But the line disconnected.
Nia stared at the phone.
A moment later, an email arrived from the bank, forwarded by Marcus.
The subject line read:
*URGENT: REVIEW OF DISPUTED ACCOUNT TRANSFER.*
Marcus opened the attachment on his phone and showed it to Nia.
The document listed the original account, the destination account, and a pending transfer request.
The destination account was not registered to Darius.
It was not registered to Marcus.
It was registered to a company Nia had never heard of.
Beneath the company name was the name of its authorized recipient.
Nia read it once.
Then she read it again.
The recipient was Renee Bennett.
Her mother.
Nia looked up at Marcus.
"Why would my mother be receiving the money?""
Marcus shook his head.
"I don't know.""
Ms. Brooks took the phone and examined the information.
"This needs to be independently verified. We cannot conclude from this record alone that the transfer was completed or that your mother knew the purpose of the account.""
Nia nodded, but she barely heard the words.
Her mother had signed the agreement.
Her mother had delivered the envelope.
Her mother had witnessed Darius's signature.
And now her name appeared on the destination account for money intended for Maya's treatment.
Nia called Renee.
The call rang once.
Twice.
Then her mother answered.
"Nia?""
Nia's voice was almost unrecognizable.
"Mom, why is your name on the account Darius tried to transfer Maya's money into?""
Renee began crying immediately.
"Oh, baby.""
Nia gripped the phone.
"Tell me the truth.""
"I never received that money.""
"Then why is the account registered to you?""
Renee's breathing became ragged.
"I didn't open that account.""
Nia stared at the document.
"Then who did?""
Her mother went silent.
Then she whispered, "Your father.""
Nia felt her knees weaken.
Before she could respond, Renee spoke again.
"But he didn't open it for himself.""
"Then for whom?""
Renee began to sob.
"He opened it because Darius told him the money would be needed if Maya's treatment was stopped.""
Nia's entire body went cold.
The hospital room seemed to fall away around her.
"Mom," she whispered, "what are you saying?""
Renee took a shaky breath.
"I'm saying your father knew the procedure might be canceled before you ever brought Maya to this hospital.""
Nia stared at the phone.
For several seconds, she couldn't speak.
Then Dr. Carter stepped toward her.
"Ms. Bennett?""
She slowly lifted her eyes.
"My father knew," she whispered.
"He knew the procedure might be stopped before any of this happened.""
Dr. Carter looked at the documents.
Ms. Brooks immediately asked Marcus to preserve the bank records and provide the relevant information for review.
Nia turned back to the phone.
"Mom, why?""
Renee's answer came through a flood of tears.
"Because your father was afraid of what would happen if Maya received the procedure.""
Nia felt the floor shift beneath her.
"Afraid of what?""
Her mother whispered a sentence that made Nia's blood run cold.
"Because he believed the procedure would reveal something about Maya that your husband had been hiding.""
Nia stared at her daughter's bed.
The monitor continued to beep.
The IV continued to drip.
And suddenly, the mystery was no longer only about money, signatures, or a canceled procedure.
It was about what Darius had known.
What Frank had feared.
And what someone in her family had been desperate to keep from being discovered.
Nia raised the phone to her ear.
"Mom," she said, her voice shaking, "what exactly did my father think the doctors would discover?""
Renee began to answer.
But before she could finish, Dr. Carter's phone rang.
He listened for several seconds, his expression changing with every word.
Then he looked at Nia.
"Ms. Bennett, the clinical team has completed an initial review of Maya's case.""
Nia's heart hammered.
"What does that mean?""
Dr. Carter held her gaze.
"It means we have new information about the procedure itself.""
May you like
He paused.
"And it may explain why someone was so determined to stop it.""
