Chapter 7: The Agreement Behind Her Back

The original agreement arrived at 4:17 p.m.

Nia remembered the time because she had been staring at the digital clock above Maya's hospital bed for nearly an hour, counting every minute that passed without an answer about her daughter's treatment.

When Nurse Williams entered carrying a sealed records folder, Nia stood so quickly that her chair scraped backward across the floor.

"Is that it?"" she asked.

The nurse nodded.

"The records coordinator located the original agreement. Dr. Carter has requested that we review it with the appropriate hospital administrator before determining whether it has any bearing on Maya's care.""

Nia stared at the folder.

"Does it have my name on it?""

"I haven't examined the contents.""

"Does it have my signature?""

"I don't know, Ms. Bennett.""

Nia swallowed.

"Then let's find out.""

Dr. Carter entered moments later, accompanied by a hospital administrator named Ms. Brooks. She was a middle-aged Black woman wearing a navy suit, carrying a laptop and a slim folder of her own.

After introducing herself, Ms. Brooks pulled a chair beside the counter.

"Ms. Bennett, I understand you've raised concerns about a refusal form and a separate family agreement," she said.

"My role is to help establish what documents were submitted, what they actually authorize, and whether any administrative action needs to be corrected.""

"Can you tell me whether my husband had the right to cancel my daughter's procedure?""

"I can't answer that without reviewing the relevant records and circumstances. I can tell you that we will not treat an unverified document as conclusive simply because someone submitted it.""

Nia glanced at Dr. Carter.

"That's all I've been asking.""

Ms. Brooks opened the folder.

Inside were four pages, clipped together. The first carried a heading that made Nia's stomach tighten.

*FAMILY FINANCIAL AND CARE ARRANGEMENT.*

She recognized the date immediately.

Three weeks earlier.

The day Darius had come home late, placed a stack of papers on the kitchen counter, and told her he might have found a way to help with the mounting medical expenses.

He had kissed her forehead while she washed dishes.

"Don't worry, baby," he'd said.

"I'm handling something that could make all of this easier.""

She had believed him.

Now she stared at the agreement he had prepared.

"What does it say?"" she whispered.

Ms. Brooks read the first section silently, then summarized it carefully.

"The document describes a proposed financial arrangement connected to Maya's medical expenses. It also contains language about temporary decision-making authority if one parent is unable to participate.""

Nia shook her head.

"I never agreed to that.""

Ms. Brooks turned to the signature page.

"Your husband signed here. Your mother signed as a witness.""

Nia leaned forward.

"Where's my signature?""

Ms. Brooks examined the page.

"Your name appears in the section identifying the other parent, but I don't see a signature from you on this document.""

For a moment, Nia felt relief.

Then Ms. Brooks turned the page.

"There is a separate acknowledgment attached to the agreement.""

Nia's relief vanished.

The acknowledgment contained a paragraph stating that Nia had been informed of the arrangement and had expressed no objection to its proposed terms.

Below it was a handwritten note.

Discussed with Nia Bennett.

And beside the note was Renee's signature.

Nia stared at it.

"My mother wrote that?""

"The handwriting appears consistent with the witness signature, but we would need to verify its origin before making a formal determination.""

Nia reached for her phone.

"I want her here.""

Dr. Carter spoke gently.

"Ms. Bennett, you can contact your mother, but let's first finish reviewing the document.""

"No."" Nia looked at him, tears gathering in her eyes.

"I need to hear her explain how she decided I had agreed to something I never saw.""

She called Renee and put the phone on speaker.

Her mother answered almost immediately.

"Nia, sweetheart?""

"Mom, I'm looking at the agreement you signed with Darius.""

A long silence followed.

"Where did you get that?""

"The hospital located it. It says you witnessed the agreement, and there's a note saying you discussed it with me.""

Renee began crying.

"Baby, I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

"Your husband told me you knew about it.""

"He lied.""

"I didn't know that.""

Nia looked at the page.

"You wrote that we discussed it.""

"I thought we had discussed the general idea.""

"What general idea?""

"Helping with the bills. Darius said he had found someone who could assist us financially, but there would be conditions.""

"What conditions?""

Renee's breathing became uneven.

"He said the person helping would need reassurance that the family could make decisions together if you became too overwhelmed.""

Nia stared at her mother.

"Too overwhelmed to do what?""

"To handle everything.""

"I'm handling everything now!""

Her voice echoed through the hospital room.

Maya's monitor continued its steady rhythm.

Nia lowered her voice, but the anger remained.

"Mom, did you know this agreement could be used to challenge my decisions about Maya's treatment?""

"No. Darius told me it was only to make sure the bills were covered.""

"Then why did you sign the acknowledgment saying I knew about it?""

Renee sobbed.

"He told me you'd said you were too tired to deal with the paperwork. He said you wanted me to help.""

Nia closed her eyes.

Darius had turned her exhaustion into evidence against her.

He had watched her sit beside Maya's bed, crying into her hands, and apparently used those moments to persuade her own mother that she couldn't be trusted.

"Did you ever ask me whether that was true?"" Nia whispered.

Renee didn't answer.

"Mom?""

"No.""

The single word broke something inside Nia.

She had expected denial. She had expected excuses.

She hadn't expected her mother to admit that she had never even asked.

Ms. Brooks quietly closed the folder halfway, giving Nia a moment.

Dr. Carter remained beside the counter, watching without interrupting.

Finally, Nia spoke again.

"Who was paying the money?""

Renee sniffed.

"Darius said a private family foundation was helping.""

"Which foundation?""

"I don't know its name.""

"Mom, you signed a legal-looking document, witnessed my husband's signature, and delivered the papers to my daughter's hospital. How could you not know who was involved?""

"I thought I was helping you.""

Nia pressed her hand over her mouth.

She wanted to scream.

Instead, she ended the call.

Ms. Brooks reopened the folder.

"There is one additional page we haven't discussed.""

Nia looked up.

"What now?""

"The agreement identifies a third party connected to the proposed financial arrangement.""

She turned the page toward Nia.

A company name appeared near the top.

*BENNETT FAMILY CARE TRUST.*

Nia frowned.

"I've never heard of that.""

Ms. Brooks studied the page.

"The document lists an account reference and a designated representative, but we need to verify whether the entity exists as described and what role it actually played.""

Nia pointed at the bottom.

"Who signed as the representative?""

Ms. Brooks read the name.

Then she stopped.

Nia's pulse quickened.

"What?""

"The document identifies the representative as Marcus Reed.""

Nia stared at her.

Marcus Reed was Darius's older brother.

He had attended Maya's birthday party. He had helped Darius assemble her bed when she was six. He had stood beside Nia at the hospital entrance when Maya was first admitted and promised the family would do whatever it took to help her recover.

Nia remembered his exact words.

We're going to get through this together.

She looked at Dr. Carter.

"His brother was involved, too?""

"The document lists him as a representative," Ms. Brooks replied.

"That does not yet establish what he knew or what actions he took.""

Nia took out her phone and called Marcus.

He answered on the second ring.

"Nia? How's Maya?""

"Why is your name on a family care agreement I never signed?""

Silence.

Then Marcus said, "Darius told me you understood the arrangement.""

Nia's knees weakened.

"You knew about it?""

"I knew there was a financial agreement.""

"Did you know he used it to cancel Maya's procedure?""

"I didn't know he'd done that.""

"Then why is your name on the document?""

Marcus sighed.

"Because I was the person handling the account.""

"What account?""

He hesitated.

Then he said something that made Nia's blood run cold.

"The account Darius opened to pay for Maya's treatment.""

Nia gripped the phone.

"My husband opened an account to pay for her treatment?""

"Yes.""

"Then why did he refuse the procedure?""

Marcus didn't answer.

Nia heard a door close on his end of the call.

Finally, he spoke.

"Because the money wasn't coming from where he told you it was.""

Nia stared at the agreement.

"What does that mean?""

Marcus lowered his voice.

"Before you accuse anyone else, you need to see the original funding records.""

"Where are they?""

"At Darius's office.""

"Then send them to me.""

"I can't.""

"Why not?""

"Because the person who provided the money has already contacted him.""

Nia's grip tightened around the phone.

"Who provided it?""

Marcus exhaled.

Then he said the name.

"Your father.""

The call ended before Nia could ask another question.

She stood frozen beside Maya's bed.

Her father had been absent from her life for nearly a decade. He had missed birthdays, ignored invitations, and failed to show up when Nia needed him most.

Now his name appeared at the center of a financial arrangement that had been used to challenge her authority as Maya's mother.

Ms. Brooks watched her carefully.

"Ms. Bennett, do you know someone who could verify this funding arrangement?""

Nia slowly lifted her eyes.

"Yes.""

Her phone vibrated.

An incoming message appeared from an unfamiliar number.

Your father wants to meet you tonight. He says he can explain why Darius had to stop the procedure.

Nia looked at Maya.

Then she read the message again.

Her husband had refused their daughter's treatment.

Her mother had helped him.

His brother had handled the money.

May you like

And now the father who had abandoned Nia was asking to meet.

For the first time, she wondered whether the betrayal she could see was only the smallest part of what had been arranged behind her back.
