Chapter 6: The Trap For Victor Grant

Victor always believed he was the smartest person in the room.

That was his weakness.

People like him confuse patience with power.

They think because they can wait, they can win.

But they forget something.

The person they underestimate gets stronger while they’re watching.

I stopped chasing Victor.

That confused everyone.

Marcus especially.

“You’re letting him move?””

I looked at him.

“I’m letting him think he’s winning.””

Because Victor needed control.

He needed to feel superior.

He needed to believe he was still ten steps ahead.

And I was going to use that.

We created a false trail.

A fake report suggesting the evidence Simone collected had been destroyed.

A rumor that my daughters’ memories were unreliable.

A message that made it seem like I was preparing to leave the country.

Victor took the bait within hours.

That told me everything.

He was still watching.

Still listening.

Still had someone feeding him information.

The only question was who.

Marcus monitored every communication.

Then the message came.

Victor wanted to meet.

Not me.

My daughters.

My blood turned cold.

“No.””

Marcus nodded.

“That was my reaction too.””

I looked at the message again.

Victor claimed he wanted to apologize.

He said he wanted closure.

The same man who helped destroy their childhood wanted closure.

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Instead, I planned.

We would let him come.

But we would decide how it ended.

The location was an abandoned office building Victor once used for business meetings.

A place filled with memories.

A place where I had shaken his hand.

Signed deals.

Called him family.

Now it was where he would lose everything.

Before leaving, I went upstairs.

My daughters were sitting together.

Naomi was reading them a book.

I watched from the doorway.

A year ago, I would have thought this was impossible.

Their laughter.

Their peace.

Their trust slowly returning.

I didn’t want revenge anymore.

Not the kind I used to understand.

I wanted justice.

There was a difference.

I knelt beside them.

“I need to go somewhere.””

Amara looked worried.

“Where?””

“To fix something.””

She grabbed my hand.

“Come back.””

Two words.

But they carried everything.

The fear.

The hope.

The love.

“I will.””

At the office building, Victor was waiting.

Of course he was calm.

He always was.

He stood by the window overlooking the city.

“You look tired, Darius.””

I smiled slightly.

“You look confident.””

“I am.””

He turned around.

“Because you still don’t understand.””

I said nothing.

Victor walked closer.

“You think this is about money.””

“It isn’t?””

“No.””

He smiled.

“It’s about legacy.””

I stared at him.

“You killed my wife for legacy?””

His expression didn’t change.

That was the worst part.

“Yes.””

The word hit me harder than I expected.

No denial.

No excuse.

Just yes.

“You were always emotional,” he continued.

“Simone made you weak.””

I felt anger rise.

But I controlled it.

“You knew she was going to expose you.””

“She was going to destroy everything I built.””

I shook my head.

“Everything I built.””

There it was.

The truth.

Victor never wanted my empire.

He wanted to believe it belonged to him.

“You were my brother,” I said.

His face hardened.

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“I was the man standing beside you while everyone else waited for you to fall.””

I looked at him.

“And now?””

A small smile appeared.

“Now I’m the man who survives.””

That was when Marcus stepped from the shadows.

Behind him were investigators.

Law enforcement.

And the recording device Victor never noticed.

His smile disappeared.

For the first time, Victor Grant looked afraid.

“You set me up.””

“No,” I said.

I looked at him.

“You did this yourself.””

The room filled with footsteps.

Victor looked around.

Then toward me.

“This isn’t over.””

I walked closer.

“Yes, Victor.””

I lowered my voice.

“It is.””

But as they placed the cuffs around his wrists, my phone rang.

Naomi.

I answered immediately.

Her voice was shaking.

“Darius…”

My heart stopped.

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then she whispered.

“The girls found something else.””

I looked at Victor.

And suddenly, I knew.

May you like

The truth about Simone’s death was bigger than I thought.

And Victor wasn’t the only secret my family had been hiding.
