Chapter 8: The Person We Never Suspected
The photograph fell from my hand.
Naomi picked it up.
She looked at it.
Then looked at me.
“Darius…”
I couldn’t answer.
Because my mind was trying to understand something that didn’t make sense.
The person in that picture was alive.
And that person had been gone for years.
Marcus entered the room.
“What happened?””
I handed him the photograph.
His expression changed immediately.
“Impossible.””
That was exactly what I thought.
The woman standing beside Victor was Simone’s older sister, Camille.
The same Camille everyone believed had moved overseas after a family argument.
The same Camille who disappeared from our lives.
The same Camille who had never attended Simone’s funeral.
I spent years believing she simply didn’t care.
Now I wasn’t sure what to believe.
“Find her,” I said.
Marcus nodded.
But Naomi looked worried.
“What if she doesn’t want to be found?””
I looked at the photograph.
“Then she knows something.””
We found Camille two days later.
Not hiding.
Not running.
Living quietly in a small town three hours away.
When she opened the door and saw me, her face changed.
Not surprise.
Fear.
That told me everything.
“You know why I’m here,” I said.
She looked away.
“I was hoping you never found out.””
I stepped inside.
“You knew.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I knew Victor was dangerous.””
My voice hardened.
“And you said nothing?””
She looked at me.
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Before Simone died.””
The room went silent.
Camille sat down.
“I found out Simone was investigating him. I begged her to leave.””
“She didn’t.””
“No.””
A sad smile appeared.
“Because your wife was the bravest person I ever knew.””
I looked down.
“Then why didn’t you help her?””
Camille covered her face.
“Because Victor threatened me.””
Another person.
Another threat.
Another life controlled by fear.
“What did he have on you?””
She looked at me.
“Your father.””
I froze.
“My father?””
Camille nodded.
“Before he died, your father made enemies. Victor found documents that could have damaged your family name.””
I stared at her.
“That’s impossible.””
“No, Darius.””
She whispered.
“He used your family history against everyone.””
Victor had been collecting secrets for years.
Not just about me.
About everyone around me.
He didn’t build power through loyalty.
He built it through fear.
“Why send me the picture now?”” I asked.
Camille looked toward the window.
“Because Victor wasn’t the only one who planned to betray you.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
She reached into a drawer.
Pulled out an envelope.
Inside were documents.
Names.
Payments.
Meetings.
And one name I didn’t recognize.
The person funding everything.
The person above Victor.
I read the name twice.
Then again.
Because it couldn’t be true.
A person I had trusted.
A person who had comforted my family.
A person who had been standing beside me through all of this.
My hands shook.
“No.””
Camille looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I stared at the document.
Because the betrayal was deeper than money.
Deeper than business.
It reached into my home.
Into my grief.
Into my children’s pain.
When I returned to the estate, I didn’t tell anyone what I found.
Not yet.
Because now I understood Victor’s biggest weapon.
It wasn’t money.
It wasn’t influence.
It was knowing exactly who to manipulate.
That night, I walked into the living room.
My daughters were singing.
Quietly.
Happily.
The same song that once held their pain now sounded different.
It sounded like healing.
I stood there watching them.
And I made a decision.
No more secrets.
No more protecting people who didn’t protect us.
The truth was coming.
All of it.
Even if it destroyed everything I built.
Because I finally understood something Simone had known all along.
