Chapter 7: The Truth Buried Beneath The Silence

When I arrived back at the estate, I already knew something had changed.

Not because anyone told me.

Because the entire house felt different.

For fourteen months, the King estate had carried the weight of grief.

Even the walls felt tired.

But that night, something else was there.

Fear.

I walked through the front door and saw Naomi standing near the staircase.

Her face was pale.

The kind of pale that tells you someone has seen something they can’t unsee.

“What happened?”” I asked.

She looked toward the living room.

“The girls found something in Simone’s room.””

I stopped.

“Simone’s room?””

Naomi nodded.

“I didn’t even know that place was still locked.””

Neither did I.

After Simone died, I couldn’t bring myself to enter that room.

I told everyone it was because I wanted to preserve her memory.

But the truth was uglier.

I was afraid.

Afraid that if I opened that door, I would have to accept she was really gone.

I walked upstairs slowly.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

The bedroom door was open.

Inside, my daughters sat on the floor.

Amara held an old jewelry box.

Zoe had a photograph in her hand.

Nia sat quietly beside them.

When I entered, they looked up.

This time, there was no fear.

Only sadness.

“Daddy,” Amara whispered.

That one word almost broke me.

I knelt beside her.

“What did you find?””

She opened the jewelry box.

Inside were old necklaces, letters, and a small flash drive.

I stared at it.

“Where was this?””

Zoe pointed toward the closet.

She walked over and touched the floor.

A loose wooden panel.

My heart sank.

Simone had hidden it.

And she had hidden it well.

I grabbed my laptop and inserted the drive.

For a few seconds, nothing happened.

Then a video appeared.

The screen showed Simone.

My breath disappeared.

She looked tired.

Not the Simone from photographs.

Not the woman everyone saw at events.

This was my wife alone.

Afraid.

“Darius,” she said.

I had to look away for a moment.

Hearing her voice again was almost too much.

“If you’re watching this, then something happened, and I’m sorry.””

She took a breath.

“I wanted to tell you sooner.””

The video shook slightly.

Like she was holding the camera herself.

“Victor knows about the accounts. He knows about the meetings. He knows everything.””

She looked behind her.

Like she was afraid someone was nearby.

“But he’s not working alone.””

The room went silent.

My daughters looked at the screen.

Naomi moved closer.

Simone continued.

“There are people inside the organization helping him. People who believe Darius’s empire should belong to them.””

My hands tightened.

She wasn’t talking about one enemy.

She was talking about a group.

A plan.

A takeover.

“I tried to collect proof.””

She held up a folder.

“Everything I found is stored in different places. I couldn’t keep it together because if Victor found everything, he would know exactly what I knew.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“Darius, listen to me.””

Her voice cracked.

“Do not let anger control you.””

I froze.

Because she knew me.

She knew exactly what I would become if I discovered the truth.

“Your daughters need their father. Not a man chasing revenge.””

I closed my eyes.

A tear fell before I could stop it.

“I love you,” she whispered.

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

For a long time, nobody moved.

Then Amara touched my arm.

“Mommy wanted you to be good.””

I looked at her.

Those words hurt because they were true.

I had spent my whole life believing strength meant never backing down.

But Simone understood something I didn’t.

Strength wasn’t just knowing how to fight.

It was knowing what was worth fighting for.

The next morning, we started digging deeper.

Victor’s arrest had shaken everyone connected to him.

People who had stayed silent suddenly wanted protection.

People who had helped him suddenly wanted deals.

And one by one, the truth came out.

Victor had built a secret council inside my organization.

Executives.

Advisors.

People who had access to money and information.

They weren’t loyal to me.

They were loyal to power.

The worst betrayal came from someone I never expected.

My longtime financial advisor, Leonard Brooks.

A man who helped me build my first company.

A man who knew every number.

Every investment.

Every weakness.

When Marcus brought him in, Leonard looked defeated.

Not guilty.

Defeated.

Like he had already accepted what was coming.

“Why?”” I asked him.

He looked at the floor.

“Because Victor promised me a seat at the top.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was pathetic.

“You helped destroy my family for a chair?””

Leonard looked ashamed.

“I thought Simone was exaggerating.””

“She was murdered.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I know.””

I stepped closer.

“Then tell me everything.””

And he did.

Victor’s plan was bigger than taking my company.

He wanted control of everything connected to me.

My businesses.

My properties.

My reputation.

Even my daughters.

Because as long as my daughters remained silent, nobody could challenge the official story.

But when they spoke?

Everything changed.

Leonard revealed one more thing.

The night Simone died wasn’t supposed to happen the way it did.

Victor planned to scare her.

Force her into silence.

But Simone fought back.

She tried to expose him.

And that was when everything went wrong.

I walked outside after hearing that.

I needed air.

Not because I was weak.

Because I was trying not to become the man Victor believed I was.

Naomi found me near the garden.

“You’re blaming yourself.””

I didn’t answer.

She already knew.

“I should have seen it.””

She shook her head.

“Darius.””

“I brought him into our lives.””

“You trusted someone.””

“I put my family in danger.””

Naomi stepped closer.

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“You loved someone who betrayed you. Those are different things.””

I looked at her.

And for the first time in a long time, I allowed myself to believe something.

Maybe I wasn’t only the man who failed.

Maybe I was also the man who could fix what was left.

Two days later, the final piece arrived.

A package.

No return address.

Inside was one thing.

A photograph.

Victor.

Standing beside someone else.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who should have been impossible.

May you like

My hands went cold.

Because the person standing beside Victor was the last person I expected.
