Chapter 6: The Picture Vanessa Changed
Marcus opened Andre's message.
The photograph appeared on his phone in sharp, high-resolution detail.
It showed the same London hotel lobby, the same reception desk, and the same navy travel bag he had recognized in Vanessa's version.
But this image was wider.
The woman in the dark coat was standing beside Marcus, facing him directly. Her face was clearly visible.
Marcus stared at her.
He knew her.
“That's not possible,” he whispered.
Nia leaned forward.
“Who is she?””
Marcus didn't answer.
He enlarged the photograph, studying the woman's face. She had shoulder-length black hair, a small beauty mark near her cheek, and a silver necklace he remembered seeing during a business dinner months earlier.
Her name was Danielle.
She worked for the company that had arranged his London meetings.
Marcus had spoken to her several times about travel schedules and client presentations. She was professional, married, and had never given him any reason to think their relationship was anything other than business.
He read Andre's message again.
Look at the time stamp.
The photograph had been taken at 9:42 p.m.
Marcus frowned.
He remembered that night. He had returned to the hotel after dinner, discovered that his flight itinerary had changed, and gone downstairs to speak with the front desk.
Danielle had been there because she was staying at the same hotel before an early meeting.
They had spoken for several minutes about the revised schedule.
Then they had gone their separate ways.
Nothing unusual had happened.
At least, that was what he remembered.
He typed a message to Andre.
*Why do you have this photograph?*
The reply came quickly.
*Because Vanessa asked me to delete it. I refused.*
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
*Why would she ask you to delete it?*
Andre took longer to respond.
Then three messages appeared.
*She said the picture proved you were hiding something from Nia.*
*But the original doesn't prove that.*
*She cropped out the part that explains everything.*
Marcus looked at the photograph again.
He moved his finger across the screen, zooming out until the entire lobby came into view.
Behind Danielle, near the reception desk, stood another person.
A man in a gray suit.
Marcus recognized him too.
It was Danielle's husband, standing beside the desk while speaking with the receptionist.
Marcus felt a wave of disbelief.
The photograph Vanessa had shown Nia had deliberately excluded him.
Without him, the image made it appear that Marcus and Danielle had been alone together in the hotel lobby.
With him included, it showed a routine business encounter.
Marcus lowered the phone.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
Then he looked at Nia.
“Vanessa cropped the photograph.””
Nia's eyes filled with tears.
“I told you I didn't know what she was doing.””
Marcus studied her.
“Did you know who the woman was?””
“No.””
“Did you know Vanessa had changed the picture?””
“No, Marcus.””
He believed her answer, but relief didn't come.
Instead, he felt anger rising beneath his ribs.
Vanessa had humiliated his wife, frightened their family, and turned an ordinary photograph into a weapon.
Yet the most disturbing question remained unanswered.
Why?
Marcus typed another message.
*Andre, what else is Vanessa hiding?*
Andre's reply came almost immediately.
*I don't know everything. But she told me she had proof about the pregnancy before you returned from London.*
Marcus stopped breathing for a moment.
He read the message twice.
Then he turned the screen toward Nia.
“Did Vanessa tell you she had proof?””
Nia shook her head.
“No.””
“Did she ever say anything about London being connected to your pregnancy?””
“No.””
Marcus studied her face.
“You're certain?””
“Yes.””
He looked back at the phone.
Andre was typing again.
*There's something else. Vanessa didn't get that photograph from me. She got it from someone who was with her the night you returned.*
Marcus's jaw tightened.
*Who?*
The typing indicator appeared.
Disappeared.
Appeared again.
Finally, Andre sent a name.
*Your mother.*
Marcus stared at the screen.
His mother, Evelyn, had been at the backyard party. She had stood beside the cake table when Vanessa smashed the ultrasound frame. She had watched Nia collapse and had followed the ambulance to the hospital.
But she had said almost nothing.
Marcus called her immediately.
She answered after four rings.
“Marcus?””
“Mom, did you give Vanessa a photograph of me in London?””
Silence.
He closed his eyes.
“Mom?””
“Where did you hear that?””
“That's not an answer.””
Evelyn sighed.
“Marcus, this isn't the right time.””
“I'm sitting in a hospital room with my pregnant wife, trying to understand why her sister accused her of lying about our baby. I think the time is right.””
His mother lowered her voice.
“Vanessa told me she was worried about Nia.””
“Worried about what?””
“She said the dates didn't make sense.””
“Did you give her the photograph?””
“Yes.””
Marcus stood abruptly.
“Why?””
“Because she asked me whether you'd been alone in London.””
“And what did you tell her?””
“That I didn't know.””
“Then why give her the picture?””
“Because I thought it might help her understand what had happened.””
Marcus pressed his fingers against his forehead.
“Nothing happened, Mom. Danielle's husband was standing right there.””
“I know that now.””
“Did you know it then?””
“No.””
“Then why didn't you ask me?””
Evelyn began to cry.
“Because Vanessa said you would lie if I confronted you.””
Marcus stared at the wall.
His own mother had trusted his sister-in-law's suspicions more than she trusted him.
“Did you know Vanessa was going to confront Nia at the party?””
“No. I swear to you, Marcus. I thought she was going to talk to you privately.””
“Instead, she smashed a picture of my child in front of everyone.””
Evelyn sobbed.
“I didn't know she would do that.””
Marcus ended the call.
He stood motionless for several seconds before sitting down again.
Nia reached toward him.
“Marcus, I'm sorry.””
He looked at her.
“For what?””
“For everything that's happened.””
“You didn't crop the picture.””
“No.””
“You didn't send the messages.””
“No.””
“Then stop apologizing for what Vanessa did.””
Nia lowered her hand.
Marcus regretted his tone immediately, but he was too exhausted to find the right words.
He looked at Andre's messages again.
Something still didn't fit.
Vanessa had accused Nia of lying about the baby. She had used a photograph that falsely suggested Marcus had been hiding something in London. She had involved his mother and apparently gathered information about the pregnancy before he returned.
But the photograph did not explain the ultrasound dates.
Nor did it explain why Vanessa had seemed so certain that Nia was hiding something.
Marcus turned toward his wife.
“Nia, I need you to answer one question honestly.””
She nodded, tears shining on her cheeks.
“Did Vanessa ever tell you that she knew something about the baby that you didn't?””
Nia stared at him.
For a long moment, she seemed unable to breathe.
Then she whispered, “Yes.””
Marcus felt the room tilt beneath him.
“When?””
“Before the party.””
“What did she say?””
Nia covered her mouth.
“She said she had something that could destroy our marriage.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“What was it?””
“I don't know. She wouldn't show me.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because she said if I did, she'd make sure everyone believed the worst about me.””
Marcus looked at the phone in his hand.
Then at the ultrasound monitor.
Then at the woman he had promised to love for the rest of his life.
Outside the room, footsteps approached.
A moment later, someone knocked.
Dr. Carter entered holding a newly arrived medical report.
“Nia,” she said, “the earlier clinic has sent us the first ultrasound record.””
Marcus stood.
“Does it clarify the dates?””
Dr. Carter looked down at the document.
“I've reviewed the report. There is a discrepancy that needs further evaluation.””
Nia's fingers clutched the bedsheet.
Marcus moved closer.
“What kind of discrepancy?””
The doctor lifted her eyes.
“The earlier scan gives us another point of comparison. But before I discuss the findings, I need to confirm one detail with Nia about the date she reported at that appointment.””
She turned toward Nia.
“Nia, when you told the clinic you believed you were six weeks pregnant, were you certain of the date of your last menstrual period?””
Nia went completely still.
Marcus looked at his wife.
May you like
Her lips parted.
And for the first time since the party, she looked less afraid of what Vanessa might reveal than of what the medical record might say.
