Chapter 9: The Record No One Was Supposed to See

The appointment record arrived thirty seconds later.

Marcus opened it while standing beside Nia's hospital bed.

At first glance, it looked ordinary: a clinic header, a date, a patient reference number, and a brief note about an appointment.

But the name printed beneath the heading made his hands go cold.

*EVELYN HAYES.*

His mother.

He read the date.

Then he checked it again.

The appointment had taken place several days before his return from London.

“What is this?”” Nia asked.

Marcus turned the phone toward her.

She studied the document, her brows drawing together.

“Why would your mother have a clinic appointment connected to any of this?””

“I don't know.””

He enlarged the image.

The record contained no diagnosis or detailed medical information, only the appointment date and a short administrative note. It did not establish anything about Nia's pregnancy, and it certainly did not explain Vanessa's accusations.

But the timing was impossible to ignore.

Marcus called Andre.

“Where did this come from?””

“Vanessa sent it to me,” Andre replied.

“She asked if I recognized the date.””

“Did you?””

“No. I asked her why she had your mother's appointment information. She told me Evelyn had asked her to look into something.””

Marcus frowned.

“Look into what?””

“She wouldn't say.””

“Did my mother know Vanessa was using this record?””

“I don't know. Vanessa said your mother wanted answers, but I couldn't tell whether that was true.””

Marcus looked at Nia.

She was staring at the screen, her face pale.

“Could the record be unrelated?”” she asked.

“Of course it could,” Marcus replied.

“We don't know what it means.””

He wanted to believe that.

A routine appointment could have a dozen explanations. His mother had her own private life, her own reasons for seeking medical care, and every right to keep those details confidential.

The record did not give him permission to assume otherwise.

Still, Vanessa had brought it into a dispute about his wife's pregnancy.

That was what made it disturbing.

Marcus called his mother.

She answered almost immediately.

“Marcus, I was just about to call you.””

“Why did you have an appointment before I returned from London?””

Silence.

Then Evelyn said, “What appointment?””

“An appointment with a clinic. Vanessa has a copy of the record.””

His mother took a sharp breath.

“She showed you that?””

“Yes.””

“Marcus, that was private.””

“I understand that. I'm not asking you to tell me medical details you don't want to share. I'm asking why Vanessa is using the record to accuse my wife of lying about our baby.””

Evelyn didn't answer.

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Mom, did you ask Vanessa to investigate Nia?””

“No.””

“Did you give her information about our family?””

“I told her I was worried.””

“Worried about what?””

Evelyn's voice trembled.

“Vanessa came to me after Nia's first appointment. She said the dates were confusing and that Nia wasn't telling you everything.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“So you believed her?””

“I didn't know what to believe.””

“You could have called me.””

“You were overseas. You were busy, and Vanessa said she didn't want to create a problem unless she had something concrete.””

Marcus let out a slow breath.

“And instead, she created a problem in front of our entire family.””

“I didn't know she was going to do that.””

He believed his mother was frightened and ashamed. But he was also angry that she had allowed uncertainty to become suspicion without speaking directly to him or Nia.

“Why did you have that appointment?”” he asked.

Evelyn paused.

“Marcus, that has nothing to do with Nia's pregnancy.””

“Then why is Vanessa connecting it to the dates?””

“I don't know.””

“Did you tell her something about the night I came home?””

His mother went quiet again.

Marcus's heart began to pound.

“Mom?””

Finally, Evelyn answered.

“I told Vanessa that you called me when you landed.””

Marcus frowned.

“I called you the next morning.””

“Yes.””

“What does that have to do with anything?””

“Nothing, perhaps. I don't know what Vanessa thinks she has discovered.””

Marcus stared at the wall.

His mother sounded genuinely confused, but he could no longer take anyone's certainty at face value.

“Mom, I need you to speak to Nia directly. No accusations. No theories. Just the truth.””

“I will.””

“And don't give Vanessa any more information about our marriage.””

“I won't.””

He ended the call.

Nia was crying quietly.

Marcus sat beside her.

“Do you know anything about your mother-in-law's appointment?”” she asked.

“No.””

“Do you think Vanessa is trying to connect it to the pregnancy?””

“I think she's trying to connect everything to everything until it looks like a story she can prove.””

Nia lowered her head.

“What if she has something real?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Then we'll deal with the facts when we have them.””

He meant it, but he could feel the pressure building inside him. Every new message revealed another secret, and every secret led to another question.

He was tired of being the last person to learn what was happening in his own family.

His phone vibrated.

A new message from Andre appeared.

I asked Vanessa about the appointment record. She said your mother wasn't the person she was investigating.

Marcus stared at the screen.

He typed back.

*Who was she investigating?*

Andre responded:

She wouldn't tell me.

Then another message arrived.

But she said the record was only part of the story. She believes someone knew about the pregnancy before the first test.

Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

Nia watched him.

“What did he say?””

Marcus showed her the message.

She covered her mouth.

“I don't understand.””

“Neither do I.””

He looked toward the closed door, wondering how many people had been discussing his marriage while he remained unaware.

Then he made a decision.

He called Vanessa.

She answered on the first ring.

“Finally,” she said.

Marcus ignored the remark.

“Why are you investigating my wife?””

“I'm trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

“From a lie that could destroy your life.””

“Then stop talking in riddles and tell me what you know.””

Vanessa sighed.

“You're still defending her.””

“I'm defending my right to know the truth without being humiliated in front of my family.””

“You think I enjoyed that?””

“You smashed her ultrasound picture.””

“I was angry!””

“At what?””

Vanessa went silent.

Marcus waited.

When she finally spoke, her voice had lost some of its confidence.

“At the way everyone kept pretending the dates were normal.””

“An ultrasound estimate is not an exact conception date. Dr. Carter explained that.””

“I know what she said.””

“Then why are you acting like you've already proved something?””

“Because Nia told me something she hasn't told you.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

“What?””

Vanessa took a breath.

“Ask her about the first test.””

“I already did.””

“Then ask her what happened to the second one.””

Marcus turned toward Nia.

She was staring at him, her eyes wide.

He lowered his voice.

“What second test?””

Vanessa continued.

“The one she took before you came home. The one she said was positive.””

Nia's fingers began to tremble.

Marcus looked at her.

“You told me you took another test.””

“I did.””

“What happened to it?””

Nia swallowed.

“I threw it away.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly through the phone.

“That's what she told me, too.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Vanessa, if you have evidence, send it to the doctor. Don't use it to threaten my wife.””

“I didn't threaten her.””

“You told her you'd destroy our marriage.””

“I told her the truth would destroy it if she kept hiding.””

Marcus ended the call.

For several seconds, he stood silently beside the bed.

Nia's face was wet with tears.

“Marcus, I swear I wasn't trying to deceive you.””

He turned toward her.

“Then help me understand.””

She nodded, struggling to speak.

“The second test was positive. I threw it away because I thought I had taken it too early and I couldn't believe the result. Vanessa knew about it because I called her.””

“Why would she say the test matters?””

“I don't know.””

Marcus searched her face.

For the first time, he saw not only fear but exhaustion. Nia looked as though she had been carrying a burden she no longer knew how to explain.

He sat beside her and took her hand.

“I'm not going to make a decision about our marriage based on Vanessa's accusations,” he said.

“But I need you to stop keeping things from me.””

“I will.””

“Promise me.””

“I promise.””

The door opened.

Dr. Carter returned with a nurse and informed them that Nia's condition remained stable. She reviewed the follow-up instructions, answered their questions, and reminded them that the pregnancy dates needed to be interpreted alongside the original records rather than assumptions made by family members.

After the nurse left, Dr. Carter paused at the door.

“There's one additional point I want to clarify,” she said.

“The clinic has confirmed the date of the first ultrasound, but one section of the original intake form is incomplete. We need to verify the information before finalizing the dating assessment.””

Marcus stood.

“What information?””

“The date of the last menstrual period was recorded as uncertain. That means we should not use it alone to determine when conception occurred.””

Nia nodded, visibly relieved that the doctor wasn't making accusations.

Marcus thanked her.

When the room was quiet again, he looked at Nia.

“We're going to get through this,” he said.

She squeezed his hand.

“I hope so.””

His phone rang once more.

This time, the caller was Evelyn.

Marcus answered.

“Mom?””

Her voice sounded strained.

“Marcus, Vanessa just called me. She says she's coming to the hospital.””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“She isn't welcome here.””

“I know. But she told me something I think you need to hear.””

“What?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“She says she has finally found the person who gave her the first pregnancy date.””

Marcus stared at the phone.

“Who?””

His mother whispered the answer.

May you like

And for the first time that day, Marcus realized the person Vanessa had been investigating might not have been Nia at all.

It might have been someone who had been standing beside them at the backyard party all along.
