Chapter 8: The Night Before He Came Home

Nia's silence seemed to fill the entire room.

Marcus waited.

Dr. Carter stood near the counter, giving them space while reviewing the report. She had made it clear that the medical information needed careful interpretation, but the emotional crisis unfolding beside her was no longer something numbers alone could resolve.

“Nia,” Marcus said quietly.

“Did you know the dates might be wrong before I came home?””

She pressed her lips together.

“I was confused.””

“That's not the same as answering.””

“I knew I might have misunderstood when my last period started.””

Marcus looked down.

“Did you think the baby could have been conceived before my trip?””

Nia's face crumpled.

“I didn't know.””

He closed his eyes briefly.

For a moment, he wanted to leave the room, walk down the bright hospital corridor, and keep walking until he could hear himself think.

Instead, he stayed.

“Tell me everything about that night,” he said.

“No more pieces. No more waiting until someone else tells me.””

Nia took a shaky breath.

“When you called me from London, I was happy to hear your voice. But I was also upset because I'd taken a test earlier that day, and I didn't know what to do.””

“You said you'd missed your period.””

“I had.””

“Then why were you afraid?””

“Because I couldn't remember the exact date. I thought I might be farther along than I expected.””

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“Why didn't you tell me that during the call?””

“Because I wanted to tell you in person.””

He looked at her.

“Then why didn't you tell me when I got home?””

Nia's eyes filled again.

“Because Vanessa said I should wait until I had a doctor's appointment.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Your sister decided when you should tell your husband about your pregnancy?””

“She thought we should have accurate dates first.””

“And you agreed?””

“I was overwhelmed.””

He turned away, struggling to contain his frustration.

Nia continued before he could interrupt.

“The night before you came home, Vanessa visited me. She brought dinner because I hadn't eaten. I showed her the test, and we talked about the dates.””

“What did she say?””

“She said the timing could be complicated if my cycle had been irregular.””

“Did she accuse you of anything?””

“No.””

“Did she suggest I wasn't the father?””

Nia shook her head quickly.

“Not that night.””

Marcus looked back at her.

“Then when?””

Nia wiped her cheeks.

“After the first ultrasound.””

Dr. Carter looked up from the report.

“I'm going to step outside for a moment. I'll return shortly to discuss the medical findings with you both.””

After she left, Marcus sat beside Nia again.

“What happened after the first ultrasound?””

Nia stared at her hands.

“The clinic estimated how far along I was. Vanessa asked me about the date. When I told her, she said the numbers didn't seem right.””

“What exactly did she say?””

“She asked whether I was certain about my last period. I told her I wasn't. She said we needed to be careful about what we told the family until we understood the dates.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why would that matter to the family?””

“Because everyone had been asking when the baby was conceived. They knew about your trip. They kept making jokes about whether you'd planned the pregnancy around your travel schedule.””

He remembered those conversations.

His uncle had joked that Marcus must have timed everything perfectly. His mother had asked when they had started trying. Relatives had offered congratulations and advice without considering how uncomfortable the questions could be.

But none of that explained Vanessa's behavior.

“Did she tell you to lie?””

“No.””

“Did she ask you to hide the ultrasound report?””

Nia hesitated.

“She asked me not to show it to anyone until we'd spoken to the doctor.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That's not the same thing as hiding it from me.””

“I know.””

“Then why did you let her turn this into a secret?””

Nia's voice broke.

“Because I was ashamed of not knowing something I thought every pregnant woman was supposed to know.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You don't have to know everything. That's why doctors exist.””

“I know that now.””

He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.

“What happened when Vanessa started talking about London?””

Nia went quiet.

Then she reached for her phone and opened the message thread.

“There was another message before the party,” she said.

“I didn't show you because I thought it would make everything worse.””

Marcus looked at the screen.

Vanessa had written:

If the doctor confirms what I think, you need to tell Marcus before someone else does.

Below it was Nia's reply.

You don't know that you're right.

Vanessa's response had been immediate.

Then prove it.

Marcus read the exchange twice.

“You were arguing about the dates.””

“Yes.””

“And you didn't tell me.””

“I was trying to get an appointment. I wanted a doctor to explain everything before I frightened you.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You could have told me you were worried.””

“I know.””

He placed the phone on the bed.

“Did Vanessa show you the photograph of me in London before the party?””

Nia shook her head.

“No. I only saw it when she sent it today.””

“Did she tell you anything about Danielle?””

“No.””

Marcus studied her face, trying to separate what she knew from what she feared.

Then he asked the question he had been avoiding.

“Do you believe I could have done something in London that would affect our marriage?””

Nia looked startled.

“No.””

“Then why are you so afraid of the photograph?””

“Because Vanessa makes everything look like proof of something terrible.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

That answer made sense.

It didn't solve anything, but it made sense.

A knock interrupted them.

Dr. Carter returned, carrying the report and a tablet.

“I've reviewed the available measurements,” she said.

“The earlier scan and today's scan are broadly consistent with a pregnancy in the range we've discussed, though we'll need to verify the original records and dates.””

Marcus stood.

“So the baby is approximately eighteen weeks and six days?””

“That's the current ultrasound estimate. It isn't an exact conception date.””

Nia swallowed.

“Could the dates be different by several weeks?””

“Ultrasound dating has a margin of uncertainty, and earlier scans are generally useful for dating. But we shouldn't assume that the discrepancy can be explained away without reviewing the records.””

Marcus nodded.

“Then what do we need to do?””

“We'll request the original images and confirm the dates documented at your first appointment. We'll also continue to monitor Nia's symptoms and arrange any appropriate follow-up.””

Nia looked at the doctor.

“Is there anything about the scan that suggests the baby is in danger?””

“The heartbeat is reassuring. We'll keep monitoring you because of the pain, but the dating discrepancy itself doesn't tell us that the baby is in danger.””

Nia closed her eyes in relief.

Marcus held her hand.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Dr. Carter placed the tablet on the counter.

“One more thing. The clinic's report includes the date you gave them for your last menstrual period. If that date was uncertain, we should document that clearly rather than treating it as definitive.””

Nia nodded.

“I understand.””

After the doctor left, Marcus remained beside her.

He looked exhausted now, his anger giving way to something heavier.

“I wish you had told me you were scared,” he said.

Nia turned toward him.

“I should have.””

“I wish you had trusted me enough to let me be scared with you.””

She began to cry again.

Marcus brushed a tear from her cheek.

“I don't know what Vanessa believes,” he continued.

“I don't know why she changed that photograph or why she decided to destroy the ultrasound. But I'm not going to let her make medical decisions for us.””

Nia nodded.

“Okay.””

“We're going to get the original records. We're going to ask the doctor every question we need to ask. And we're going to deal with whatever the actual facts are.””

She squeezed his hand.

“Together?””

Marcus looked at her for a long moment.

“I'm trying.””

It wasn't the promise she wanted, but it was honest.

Then his phone rang.

Andre's name appeared on the screen.

Marcus answered immediately.

“What is it?””

Andre sounded breathless.

“I found the original messages Vanessa sent me before the party.””

“What messages?””

“She asked me to help her prove that the pregnancy dates were impossible.””

Marcus stood straighter.

“Did you help her?””

“No. I told her she was making assumptions. Then she sent me something I hadn't seen before.””

“What?””

Andre paused.

“An appointment record. It wasn't yours or Nia's.””

Marcus looked toward his wife.

“Whose was it?””

Andre lowered his voice.

“Your mother's.””

Marcus froze.

“What does my mother have to do with Nia's pregnancy?””

“I don't know yet. But Vanessa said the record would explain why she was so certain about the dates.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“Send it to me.””

“I will. But Marcus, there's something else you need to know.””

“What?””

Andre took a breath.

“Vanessa didn't start investigating the pregnancy because of the ultrasound. She was looking into it before Nia ever went to the clinic.””

Marcus stared at the phone.

“When?””

May you like

Andre answered in a whisper.

“Before you returned from London.””
