Chapter 12: The Choice I Made Before Forgetting
I watched the frozen image on the screen.
My younger self.
Standing in the same warehouse.
Making a decision I couldn’t remember.
A decision that had destroyed everything.
I wanted to be angry.
I wanted to deny it.
But there was one problem.
The man on the screen was me.
My voice.
My face.
My choice.
I turned toward Marcus.
“You knew.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“You knew I chose this.””
“Yes.””
“And you let me hate you.””
Marcus looked away.
“I thought it was better.””
“Better?””
My voice cracked.
“Better for who?””
Nobody answered.
Richard stepped closer.
“For everyone.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t get to say that.””
“I do.””
“No.””
I pointed at the screen.
“You took my memories.””
Richard’s expression softened.
“Because you begged me.””
That stopped me.
“What?””
He looked at Marcus.
“Tell him.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“I was there.””
“Tell me.””
Marcus’s voice was quiet.
“You were bleeding.””
The room disappeared.
“You had been attacked.””
A flash.
Blood.
Rain.
A broken motorcycle.
“You knew they were coming after Amara.””
Another flash.
Her mother holding the baby.
Younger me shaking.
“You knew they would use your memories against you.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked at Richard.
Then at me.
“You knew if they captured you, they could force you to reveal where Amara was.””
I looked at the screen.
My younger self.
Terrified.
Protecting his child.
“I chose this.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
The truth hurt.
But somehow, it hurt differently.
Because I wasn’t abandoned.
I wasn’t forgotten.
I was protecting them.
My daughter.
The woman I loved.
Even from myself.
I sat down.
For the first time in twelve years, I felt the weight of everything.
Not loss.
Responsibility.
Richard watched silently.
“You understand now.””
I looked up.
“No.””
His expression changed.
“What?””
“I understand why I forgot.””
I stood.
“But I don’t understand why you’re here.””
Richard said nothing.
That was the answer.
I stepped closer.
“You didn’t come here to help me.””
His face tightened.
“No.””
“You came because Amara found me.””
Silence.
“You were afraid.””
Richard’s jaw clenched.
“For twelve years, that girl was hidden.””
“And now?””
“Now she has you.””
I stared.
“And that scares you.””
Richard didn’t answer.
Marcus looked at me.
“Bear.””
I understood.
The thing they were afraid of wasn’t Amara.
It wasn’t me.
It was us together.
I looked at the wall of photographs.
At Noah.
At Amara.
At her mother.
“There’s still something missing.””
Richard looked away.
“What?””
“Noah.””
The room changed.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Richard said:
“You shouldn’t ask about him.””
My heart tightened.
“Why?””
“Because finding out what happened to Noah changes everything.””
I stepped closer.
“That’s exactly why I need to know.””
Richard stared at me.
Then slowly reached into his coat.
He pulled out a photograph.
A child.
A boy.
Older than Amara.
Alive.
My hands shook.
“Where is he?””
Richard looked at me.
“He’s been closer than you think.””
I took the photo.
And I knew that face.
Not because I had seen him recently.
Because I had seen him before.
In my memories.
A little boy holding my hand.
Calling me something.
I looked at Richard.
“Who is he?””
Richard whispered:
“Your son.””
The room went silent.
I couldn’t breathe.
My son.
Another child.
Another secret.
Another life stolen from me.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
A voice spoke.
A young man’s voice.
“Dad?””
My entire body froze.
The voice continued.
“I think it’s time you remember me.””
The call ended.
And for the first time in twelve years…
May you like
I remembered a name.
“Noah.””
