Chapter 9: The Woman Who Never Left
Nobody moved.
Amara stood in the doorway holding the phone with both hands.
The screen glowed in the darkness.
A name appeared.
A name I had not seen in twelve years.
Her name.
The woman I loved.
The woman I thought I lost.
My hands started shaking.
“Answer it.””
Amara looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
I almost laughed.
Was I sure?
Nothing about my life was certain anymore.
But this?
This was the one thing I had wanted.
“Answer it.””
She pressed the button.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then a voice came through.
“Amara?””
The sound broke something inside me.
Because it was real.
She was real.
I stepped closer.
“Amara…”
The voice stopped.
Then:
“Bear?””
I closed my eyes.
Hearing my name from her mouth after all these years felt impossible.
“I’m here.””
A shaky breath came through the phone.
“You found her.””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“Is she okay?””
I looked at my daughter.
“Yes.””
Another pause.
Then quietly:
“Thank you.””
I swallowed hard.
“You’re thanking me?””
“Yes.””
“For what?””
“For keeping your promise.””
I frowned.
“What promise?””
Nobody answered.
Then she said:
“The promise you made the night everything changed.””
My memory flashed.
Rain.
A hospital.
A scream.
A hand in mine.
I grabbed my head.
A sudden pain moved through me.
“Bear?””
I ignored it.
“What promise?””
Her voice trembled.
“You promised me you would protect her.””
I looked at Amara.
“I didn’t know she existed.””
“I know.””
“Then how could I promise?””
The silence on the phone was devastating.
Because she knew something I didn’t.
“You were there, Bear.””
My breathing stopped.
“You held her.””
The room disappeared.
I saw something.
A flash.
A newborn baby.
A hospital room.
Her crying.
My own voice.
A promise.
Then it vanished.
I grabbed the table.
Marcus caught my shoulder.
I pushed him away.
“No.””
Everyone froze.
Because suddenly I remembered one thing.
Not everything.
Just one thing.
Her face.
Holding a baby.
Looking at me.
Terrified.
“Why can’t I remember?””
Her voice broke through the phone.
“Because they took it from you.””
I closed my eyes.
“Who?””
The answer came softly.
“The man you thought was your friend.””
I looked at Marcus.
He looked destroyed.
“Marcus?””
She whispered:
“He didn’t want to hurt you.””
Marcus looked down.
“He wanted to save you.””
I stared.
“Then why?””
“Because he made a choice.””
“What choice?””
The line went silent.
Then she said:
“The choice between letting you remember…”
My heart pounded.
“…or letting you live.””
Nobody spoke.
The weight of those words filled the room.
I looked at Marcus.
“You erased me.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“Why?””
He looked at Amara.
“Because you were going after them.””
“Who?””
Marcus whispered:
“The people who killed your family.””
My blood went cold.
“My family?””
The woman on the phone spoke.
“Bear…”
Her voice was barely there.
“There’s something you need to know about Amara.””
I looked at my daughter.
“What?””
“She wasn’t the only child that night.””
My entire body froze.
“What?””
The phone went silent.
Then the woman said:
“Bear…”
A pause.
“She had a twin.””
Nobody breathed.
Amara looked confused.
Marcus looked terrified.
And I felt the missing pieces of my memory beginning to move.
Another child.
Another secret.
Another reason someone wanted me to forget.
Then the call suddenly ended.
I stared at the dead screen.
May you like
And on the other side of the room, Marcus whispered the words I never expected to hear.
“She was never supposed to survive.””
