Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew My Name

The entire room changed in one second.

The Christmas music was still playing.

The lights were still blinking.

The children were still laughing.

But everyone near the entrance felt the danger.

The man stood beneath the doorway, perfectly still.

He wasn’t dressed like a criminal.

That was what bothered me.

Danger rarely announces itself.

He wore a clean black coat.

Expensive shoes.

A calm expression.

The kind of face that made people underestimate him.

His eyes moved across the room until they found me.

Then he smiled.

Not warmly.

Like he had been waiting.

“Bear.””

My hand tightened around Amara’s.

“How do you know my name?””

The man walked forward.

Slowly.

Confidently.

“My name is Calvin.””

Nobody moved.

Marcus stepped beside me.

“You need to leave.””

Calvin looked at him.

“You’re still protecting him.””

Marcus’s face changed.

That sentence meant something.

Something old.

Something connected.

I looked between them.

“You two know each other?””

Neither answered.

That was my answer.

I stepped forward.

“What do you want?””

Calvin looked at Amara.

“I’m here for her.””

Amara moved behind me.

A small action.

But it told me everything.

She trusted me.

Even though she had met me hours ago.

I stood between them.

“She’s not going anywhere.””

Calvin sighed.

“You really don’t remember anything, do you?””

My jaw tightened.

“Remember what?””

He looked almost disappointed.

“Exactly.””

I hated that look.

Like he knew something about me that I didn’t.

“You have five seconds to explain why you’re here.””

Calvin smiled slightly.

“Still giving orders.””

He glanced at my vest.

“Some things never change.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What do you know about this?””

He looked at the torn seam.

“The same thing your daughter knows.””

The room went silent.

Your daughter.

Hearing someone else say it made it real.

I stepped closer.

“Careful.””

Calvin raised his hands.

“I’m not here to fight.””

“Then talk.””

He looked around.

At the bikers.

At Denise.

At Amara.

Then back at me.

“She was never supposed to find you.””

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

“Your daughter.””

The words cut through me.

“Why?””

Calvin’s expression hardened.

“Because if you remembered everything, people would lose everything.””

Marcus suddenly grabbed my shoulder.

“Bear.””

I looked at him.

His face had gone pale.

“What?””

He looked at Calvin.

“You shouldn’t have come here.””

Calvin gave a small smile.

“There he is.””

I turned.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

I pulled my arm away.

“No more secrets.””

My voice echoed through the hall.

“I am done with everyone knowing pieces of my life except me.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Calvin reached into his coat.

Several bikers immediately moved.

But he only pulled out an old envelope.

Another envelope.

He held it toward me.

“She left this for you.””

My heart stopped.

Another letter.

Another message from the past.

I didn’t take it.

“Why do you have that?””

Calvin looked at Amara.

“Because her mother trusted the wrong people.””

Amara shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stepped forward.

“My mom trusted Bear.””

Calvin looked at her sadly.

“She trusted him because she loved him.””

“Then why are you here?””

Calvin’s expression changed.

“Because she also knew what would happen if he remembered.””

I stared at the envelope.

“What is inside?””

Calvin looked directly at me.

“The truth about the night you lost twelve years.””

A cold silence followed.

I reached for the envelope.

But before my fingers touched it, Calvin spoke again.

“There’s one thing you need to know first.””

I stopped.

“What?””

He looked at Amara.

Then at me.

“The woman you’ve been searching for all these years…”

My heart pounded.

“She didn’t disappear.””

I froze.

“What did you say?””

Calvin lowered his voice.

“She was taken.””

The world stopped.

My grip tightened.

“Taken by who?””

Calvin looked toward the doorway.

Like he expected someone else to appear.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“The same person who erased your memory.””
