Chapter 2: The Picture Inside His Pocket

Andre made it ten steps.

That was all.

Ten steps toward freedom before Malik Sterling’s security team reached him.

The ballroom exploded into chaos.

Guests backed away, some holding their phones up, some whispering, some pretending they weren’t enjoying the drama unfolding in front of them.

Rich people always acted shocked by disaster.

But they never looked away.

Andre struggled as two guards grabbed him near the entrance.

“Let me go!”” he shouted.

“You have no idea who you’re dealing with!””

Malik walked toward him slowly.

That was when the room became quiet again.

There was something terrifying about a person who didn’t need to raise their voice to control the air around them.

“Actually,” Malik said, “I think I’m beginning to understand exactly who I’m dealing with.””

Andre looked away.

That was the mistake.

A guilty person can argue.

A guilty person can lie.

But a guilty person who cannot meet your eyes has already answered half the question.

I stood behind the crowd, still trying to process everything.

Ten minutes ago, I was just Lena Brooks.

The woman refilling drinks.

The woman guests ignored.

The woman who counted every dollar before buying groceries.

Now I was standing beside a billionaire while his entire engagement party turned into an investigation.

It felt unreal.

Like I had stepped into somebody else’s life.

Malik looked at his security chief.

“Search him.””

Andre’s face changed.

“No.””

Just one word.

But it carried fear.

The guards searched his jacket.

Then his pockets.

Then they found something.

A wallet.

A phone.

And a folded photograph.

The security chief opened the picture.

His expression changed immediately.

He handed it to Malik.

I couldn’t see it clearly from where I stood, but I saw Malik’s face.

And I saw the anger.

“What is this?”” Malik asked.

Andre said nothing.

Malik held up the photograph.

“Why do you have a picture of my fiancée?””

A wave of whispers moved through the room.

Nia Caldwell.

The woman standing near the stage in a silver gown, frozen like she had forgotten how to breathe.

She was beautiful.

Everyone knew that.

She had built her own reputation as a luxury fashion executive and charity organizer before she met Malik.

People called them a perfect match.

Two successful Black professionals creating a powerful family.

A love story.

At least that was what everyone believed.

Until that picture appeared.

Malik stared at Andre.

“You want to explain?””

Andre’s jaw tightened.

“I didn’t do anything.””

“Then why do you have this?””

Silence.

That silence told the truth before Andre did.

The security chief searched the rest of Andre’s belongings.

Then he found something else.

A payment receipt.

A transfer.

A large amount of money.

The name attached to it was enough to make the entire room gasp.

Nia Caldwell.

I looked at Malik.

For the first time that night, I saw something other than confidence.

I saw pain.

Because betrayal from a stranger hurts.

But betrayal from the person standing beside you?

That cuts differently.

“Nia?”” Malik whispered.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“No, Malik, listen to me.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The woman everyone came to celebrate was suddenly the center of suspicion.

Nia stepped forward.

“I can explain.””

Malik’s eyes hardened.

“Explain why a man who tried to poison me has a picture of you and proof that you paid him?””

“I didn’t pay him to hurt you.””

The room went silent.

That sentence did more damage than any confession.

Because it meant there was something else.

Something she wasn’t saying.

One of the guards suddenly pointed toward her purse.

“Sir.””

Everyone looked.

A small glass bottle had fallen onto the floor near Nia’s feet.

The same size.

The same shape.

The same clear liquid.

My stomach turned.

Malik looked down at it.

Then at Nia.

“Nia.””

She covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I swear to you, I didn’t know he was going to do this.””

Nobody believed her.

Not at first.

Because the evidence was standing right there.

But then Nia looked at Malik with the kind of fear that didn’t come from being caught.

It came from realizing she had been used.

“Malik,” she whispered.

Her voice trembled.

“You think I wanted you dead?””

He didn’t answer.

She looked around the room.

At the guests.

At the cameras.

At the people waiting to watch her fall.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Your brother planned this.””

A murmur spread through the ballroom.

Malik froze.

“My brother?””

“Julian.””

The name landed like a stone.

Everyone in Atlanta knew Julian Sterling.

Malik’s older brother.

The man who helped build Sterling Enterprises before stepping away after years of disagreements with Malik.

The man who always smiled in public.

The man who always stood beside the family.

Nia wiped her tears.

“He found Andre. He arranged everything. He told me it was only supposed to scare you.””

Malik stared at her.

“And you knew?””

“I knew something was wrong,” she said.

“I knew Julian was angry. I knew he wanted control. But I didn’t know he wanted you gone.””

The room felt smaller.

Malik turned slowly.

“Where is Julian?””

Nobody answered.

Then one of the guests pointed.

“Sir…”

Everyone followed his gaze.

Near the far exit, a man in a perfectly tailored suit was quietly walking away.

Not running.

Not panicking.

Just leaving.

Like he had already accepted that the truth would come out eventually.

Malik’s face went cold.

“Julian.””

His brother stopped.

For one second, the entire room held its breath.

Then Julian slowly turned around.

May you like

And smiled.

A smile that told me this night was nowhere near over.
