Chapter 9: The Truth Buried Beneath Our Name

The house looked smaller than I remembered.

That was the first thing I noticed when we pulled up.

The old Brooks family home sat on a quiet street where children used to ride bikes until the sun disappeared. The paint on the porch was peeling. The fence leaned slightly to one side.

But to me, it wasn’t just a house.

It was where my mother cried in the kitchen after my father vanished.

It was where Jamal learned how to ride a bike.

It was where I promised myself I would protect my family no matter what happened.

And now Julian Sterling was inside.

The man who had destroyed my brother’s trust.

The man who had tried to destroy Malik.

The man who knew the truth about my father.

Malik’s security team surrounded the property, but he stopped them from rushing in.

“We don’t know what he wants,” Malik said.

I looked at him.

“You think he wants to talk?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“He wants control.””

That was the thing about Julian.

Everything was about control.

Control over Sterling Enterprises.

Control over Malik’s reputation.

Control over the truth.

We entered through the front door.

It was unlocked.

That scared me more than if it had been forced open.

Because it meant Julian wanted us to come inside.

The living room was dark.

Old family pictures still hung on the wall.

My father’s picture was still there.

I stopped when I saw it.

Daniel Brooks.

A man I remembered only through fragments.

A deep voice.

A warm laugh.

The smell of aftershave when he hugged me before leaving for work.

A memory can be a dangerous thing.

Because sometimes you don’t miss a person.

You miss the version of them you created in your mind.

“You came.””

Julian’s voice echoed from the hallway.

He stepped into view slowly.

No weapon.

No panic.

Just that same calm expression.

Malik moved in front of me.

Julian smiled.

“Still protecting people, little brother?””

Malik’s face hardened.

“You used my employee’s family to destroy me.””

Julian looked at me.

“No.””

His eyes narrowed.

“I used the truth.””

I stepped forward.

“Where is my father?””

For the first time, Julian’s expression changed.

Not much.

But enough.

“He was a good man.””

My hands tightened.

“Answer me.””

Julian walked toward the fireplace.

“Your father discovered something he wasn’t supposed to find.””

Malik’s voice was low.

“Julian.””

But Julian continued.

“Back then, Sterling Enterprises wasn’t what you see today. There were people making decisions that would have destroyed everything.””

“Who?”” I asked.

Julian looked at Malik.

“Our father.””

The room went silent.

Malik stared at him.

“Our father?””

Julian nodded.

“He was moving money. Hiding losses. Making deals that could have ended the company.””

I looked at Malik.

“Did you know?””

“No.””

Julian laughed.

“That’s what you always did. You looked away.””

Malik stepped forward.

“I was a teenager.””

“And I was the one cleaning up the mess.””

Julian’s voice cracked.

For the first time, I saw the pain underneath the anger.

“I was seventeen when I found out what Dad had done. I was the one who helped fix everything.””

“You could have told me.””

“And then what?””

Julian looked at him.

“You would have tried to save everyone.””

Maybe he was right.

Maybe Malik had always been that kind of person.

The kind who carried too much.

The kind who believed every problem had a solution if he worked hard enough.

Julian turned toward me.

“Your father found the documents.””

I swallowed.

“What documents?””

“Proof of everything.””

“Where are they?””

Julian smiled.

“Still hidden.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

He looked around the old house.

“Your father trusted your mother more than anyone.””

I felt my breath catch.

“My mother?””

Julian nodded.

“She knew where he put them.””

“No.””

The word came out before I could stop it.

Because my mother had spent years living with unanswered questions.

She would have told me.

Wouldn’t she?

Julian seemed to read my thoughts.

“She was protecting you.””

I looked away.

“Don’t pretend you understand my mother.””

“I understand fear.””

His voice became quieter.

“Fear makes people hide things.””

Suddenly, footsteps came from behind us.

Jamal.

He entered with tears in his eyes.

“Lena.””

I turned.

“What are you doing here?””

“I followed you.””

Malik looked frustrated.

But Jamal ignored him.

“I need to tell you something.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

He looked at Julian.

“I found the documents.””

Everyone froze.

Julian’s calm disappeared.

For the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.

“Where?””

Jamal shook his head.

“You don’t get to ask that.””

Julian stepped forward.

“You have no idea what you’re holding.””

“No,” Jamal said.

His voice was stronger than I had heard in years.

“You don’t understand.””

He looked at me.

“You spent your whole life thinking Dad abandoned us.””

My eyes filled.

“But he didn’t.””

Jamal reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Worn.

Protected.

“I found this in Mama’s storage box.””

My hands trembled as I took it.

Inside was a letter.

From my father.

My heart nearly stopped.

I unfolded it.

And the first line changed everything.

*Lena, if you are reading this, it means they failed to erase the truth.*

I looked up.

Julian was no longer smiling.

May you like

Because he knew.

The truth he buried for decades was finally coming home.
