Chapter 7: The Woman in the Shadows

I had spent my whole life believing being unnoticed was a disadvantage.

Turns out, it was exactly why Julian Sterling chose me.

People like him didn’t fear powerful people.

They feared witnesses.

And I was the kind of witness nobody remembered.

The woman who carried drinks.

The woman who stood against the wall.

The woman nobody thought had enough importance to matter.

Until I ruined his entire plan.

I stared at the photograph on Malik’s desk.

My picture.

My life.

My ordinary moments captured from a distance by someone who had been watching me.

“How long?”” I asked.

Malik looked at the file again.

“We don’t know.””

That answer made my skin crawl.

The security team continued searching through documents and digital records, but I couldn’t stop looking at that photograph.

Someone had followed me.

Someone knew my routine.

Someone knew where I worked.

Where I lived.

Where I walked.

They knew enough about me to know I would react when I saw someone trying to hurt Malik.

That was the part that bothered me most.

Julian didn’t choose me because I was weak.

He chose me because he knew I had a conscience.

He knew I would try to help.

He used the best part of me against me.

And that hurt.

“I need to know something,” I said.

Malik looked up.

“What?””

“Why did Julian hate you that much?””

The room became quiet.

For the first time, Malik didn’t answer immediately.

He walked toward the window overlooking the property.

“I thought I knew.””

I waited.

“When we were younger, Julian was the one everybody noticed.””

He smiled slightly.

“Funny, right?””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Everybody thinks I was born into success. They don’t know Julian was the one who taught me how to survive.””

His voice softened.

“Our father wasn’t around much. My mother worked constantly. Julian stepped up.””

I listened.

Because underneath all the money and power was a story I recognized.

A family trying to survive.

“He protected me,” Malik continued.

“When I was sixteen, he took extra jobs so I could stay in school.””

“Then what happened?””

He looked down.

“I became successful.””

That answer surprised me.

But I understood.

Sometimes success changes the way people see you.

Sometimes it changes the way people think they deserve to be treated.

“Julian believed he built Sterling Enterprises,” Malik said.

“And he wasn’t completely wrong.””

“He helped.””

“Yes.””

He paused.

“But somewhere along the way, helping became ownership.””

I nodded slowly.

“That happens.””

Malik looked at me.

“You understand?””

I smiled sadly.

“My whole family understands.””

Because I did.

Jamal wasn’t Julian.

But I knew what it felt like when someone you loved believed their sacrifices gave them permission to hurt you.

The door opened.

A security officer stepped inside.

“We found something.””

Malik turned.

“What?””

The officer placed a laptop on the table.

“We recovered deleted messages from Andre’s phone.””

Everyone gathered around.

The messages showed conversations between Andre and Julian.

Plans.

Payments.

Instructions.

Then we saw something else.

A message from Julian.

Three days before the engagement party.

The words were simple.

*“Make sure the server is there.””*

My heart stopped.

The room went silent.

Malik looked at me.

“They knew.””

I stared at the screen.

“They knew I would be there.””

The officer nodded.

“They selected the venue because of staffing records. Julian had access to employee schedules.””

I felt sick.

Everything I thought was random wasn’t random.

My job.

That party.

That moment.

All of it had been arranged.

I wasn’t just standing in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I had been placed there.

Like a piece on a chessboard.

Malik saw my expression.

“Lena.””

I looked away.

“I’m fine.””

But I wasn’t.

Because I kept thinking about what would have happened if I hadn’t noticed.

What would have happened if I looked away?

Malik walked closer.

“You saved my life.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He looked confused.

“I didn’t save you.””

“Lena—”

“I just did what anyone should have done.””

I looked at him.

“The problem is, not everyone does.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Malik said something I didn’t expect.

“You remind me of my mother.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She used to say the same thing.””

I smiled a little.

“What did she say?””

“That doing the right thing shouldn’t be considered extraordinary.””

That stayed with me.

Because maybe that was why Julian underestimated people like us.

People who still cared.

People who still believed wrong was wrong even when nobody was watching.

The security officer cleared his throat.

“There’s one more thing.””

Malik looked over.

“What?””

“We found the person who accessed the police evidence room.””

My body tensed.

“Who?””

The officer hesitated.

Then answered.

“Detective Marcus Hill.””

Malik frowned.

“Who is that?””

“A detective assigned to the case.””

Everyone looked at each other.

The betrayal was spreading.

Not just family.

Not just business.

The entire system around them was infected.

Malik grabbed his phone.

“Find him.””

The officer nodded.

But before he left, my phone rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

Nobody spoke.

I answered.

“Hello?””

At first, there was only silence.

Then a voice.

A familiar voice.

“Lena.””

My blood turned cold.

“Jamal?””

“No.””

A pause.

Then:

“It’s Julian.””

I stepped away from the table.

Everyone watched me.

“How did you get my number?””

He laughed softly.

“You really still don’t understand how far this goes, do you?””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What do you want?””

“I want to talk.””

“You tried to kill Malik.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“I tried to fix what he ruined.””

I almost hung up.

But something stopped me.

“What did he ruin?””

Silence.

Then Julian said:

“Ask Malik why he never told you about your father.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

The call ended.

I stood frozen.

Because there was one thing I knew about Julian Sterling.

May you like

He was a liar.

But the most dangerous lies were the ones mixed with truth.
