Chapter 6: The Enemy Inside the Walls
The message stayed on every screen.
STOP LOOKING FOR AMELIA.
OR YOU WILL LOSE RUBY TOO.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The alarms continued screaming through the military headquarters, but the sound felt distant.
General Harris only saw one thing.
Ruby’s frightened face.
The little girl was still holding his hand.
Not because she trusted him completely.
Because she was scared.
And right now, he was the only person standing between her and whoever had just threatened her.
Harris stepped in front of her.
“Shut down all external communications.””
The guards immediately moved.
“Yes, General.””
“Lock every entrance.””
“Yes, sir.””
“Find out how someone accessed my authorization.””
The guard hesitated.
“That may take time.””
Harris looked at him.
“Then start now.””
The command in his voice returned.
The general.
The leader.
The man everyone expected.
But inside, he was no longer thinking like a commander.
He was thinking like a father.
Daniel watched him carefully.
“They know she’s here.””
Harris turned.
“They?””
“The people who followed Amelia.””
“Explain.””
Daniel looked at the screens.
“They didn’t hack your system to scare you.””
“No?””
“They wanted you to know they could.””
Harris understood.
A demonstration.
A warning.
Someone had walked through the strongest security system in the building without ever entering the building.
“That means they have someone inside.””
Daniel nodded.
“Or someone who used to be.””
The words bothered Harris.
Because he knew exactly what that meant.
Someone had access.
Someone who knew procedures.
Someone who knew him.
Someone who knew how his systems worked.
A person from his own world.
“General,” a guard said, approaching quickly.
“We found the entry point.””
Harris turned.
“Where?””
The guard looked uncomfortable.
“Your private archive.””
The room became silent.
“My archive?””
“Yes.””
Harris’s expression hardened.
“No one has access to that room.””
The guard swallowed.
“That’s the problem, sir.””
“What?””
“The door was opened using your clearance.””
Daniel looked at Harris.
“Again.””
The general didn’t answer.
He walked quickly through the hallway.
Ruby followed.
Daniel followed her.
“Ruby, stay close.””
She nodded.
The headquarters had changed.
Minutes ago, it had been a place of order.
Now every corner felt different.
Every shadow felt suspicious.
Harris reached the archive room.
Two guards stood outside.
The door was open.
That alone was impossible.
The archive was one of the most protected areas in the building.
Inside were decades of military records.
Sensitive information.
Historical documents.
Things that were never supposed to leave the room.
Harris entered slowly.
Nothing looked disturbed.
No broken locks.
No damaged equipment.
No obvious signs of forced entry.
That was what frightened him.
A person who broke in was one problem.
A person who belonged there was another.
“Check the logs,” Harris ordered.
A guard moved to the terminal.
A few moments later, his face changed.
“Sir.””
“What?””
The guard looked up.
“The person who accessed the archive didn’t open a file.””
“Then what did they do?””
“They uploaded one.””
Harris walked closer.
“Show me.””
The guard opened the record.
A single file appeared.
Created twenty years ago.
Modified today.
The title was:
AMELIA HARRIS — FINAL STATEMENT.
Ruby stepped closer.
“Mom?””
Harris immediately blocked her view.
“Not yet.””
Daniel looked at the screen.
“Amelia left that?””
“I don’t know.””
Harris clicked the file.
The screen went black.
Then a video appeared.
A young woman sat in front of the camera.
Amelia.
Twenty years younger.
Harris stopped breathing.
He had not seen her face in two decades.
But there she was.
Alive.
Angry.
Afraid.
The room became completely silent.
The video began.
“Dad.””
The sound of her voice nearly broke him.
Harris stepped closer.
Amelia looked directly into the camera.
“If you are watching this, then Ruby has found you.””
Harris looked at the little girl.
Ruby covered her mouth.
“She knew.””
Amelia continued.
“I don’t know when this message will reach you. I don’t know if I will be able to explain everything myself.””
She paused.
Her eyes looked tired.
Older than they should have.
“But I need you to understand one thing.””
The video flickered.
“I never abandoned you.””
Harris closed his eyes.
The words he had waited twenty years to hear.
“I left because I found evidence that someone was using your identity.””
Daniel looked at Harris.
The general already knew.
But hearing Amelia say it made it real.
“I thought I could expose them quietly.””
Amelia looked down.
“I was wrong.””
The video showed her placing a folder on the table.
“Someone inside the Phoenix Division had access to your authorization.””
Harris felt his chest tighten.
“Phoenix.””
The word echoed.
Amelia continued.
“They were not shut down.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“They’re still active.””
Harris watched.
“The people who created Phoenix didn’t disappear. They changed names. Changed positions. They moved into places where nobody would question them.””
Amelia leaned closer to the camera.
“And Dad…”
Her voice became softer.
“Some of them are still close to you.””
The video paused.
Everyone looked at each other.
Then Amelia continued.
“I know what you will think. You will want to investigate. You will want answers.””
A sad smile appeared.
“That is who you are.””
Harris almost smiled.
Almost.
“But this time, you cannot do it alone.””
The video ended.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Ruby whispered:
“She knew I would meet him.””
Harris looked at her.
“Yes.””
“She planned this.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The general looked back at Amelia’s frozen image.
Because even after twenty years, his daughter had still believed he could solve impossible things.
“Because she needed me to find the truth.””
Daniel walked toward the computer.
“There’s something else.””
Harris turned.
“What?””
Daniel pointed at the file information.
“There’s a second attachment.””
The guard opened it.
A document appeared.
One sentence.
A location.
Harris read it.
Then his face changed.
“What is it?”” Daniel asked.
The general didn’t answer.
Ruby looked up.
“Where is my mom?””
Harris stared at the screen.
Because the location was not a hiding place.
Not a safe house.
Not somewhere unknown.
It was somewhere he knew.
Somewhere he had visited hundreds of times.
Somewhere protected by people he trusted.
“General?””
Harris finally spoke.
“She left a message inside the one place she thought nobody would search.””
Daniel frowned.
“Where?””
Harris looked at him.
“My old office.””
Everyone went quiet.
“Your office?”” Daniel repeated.
“Yes.””
“But that’s inside this building.””
Harris nodded.
“Exactly.””
A cold realization spread through the room.
Amelia had not hidden the truth far away.
She had hidden it under his own roof.
“Wait,” Daniel said.
Harris looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel stared at the screen.
“The attachment has a timestamp.””
“And?””
Daniel’s face became pale.
“It wasn’t created twenty years ago.””
Harris stepped closer.
The timestamp appeared.
Created:
Today.
Time:
Seven minutes ago.
Nobody spoke.
Because that meant one thing.
Someone had just accessed Amelia’s message.
Someone had just uploaded it.
Someone had been inside the headquarters recently.
Harris turned toward the door.
The guards immediately raised their weapons.
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Someone walking toward them.
Ruby gripped Harris’s hand.
“Is it them?””
The general stared at the open doorway.
“I don’t know.””
The footsteps stopped.
A figure appeared in the doorway.
Wearing a military uniform.
Older.
Familiar.
Impossible.
Harris stared.
Because the man standing there was someone he thought he would never see again.
The man from the photograph.
Colonel Marcus Reed.
Alive.
Smiling.
And his first words were:
“General Harris.””
He looked at Ruby.
“You finally found her.””
Harris stepped forward.
“You’re supposed to be gone.””
Reed smiled.
“I was.””
A pause.
“Until Amelia made the mistake of looking for the truth.””
Ruby moved closer to Harris.
Reed’s eyes followed her.
Then he said something that made Harris’s blood run cold.
“Do you want to know where your daughter is?””
Harris froze.
“Yes.””
Reed’s smile disappeared.
“Then you need to know what she did before she vanished.””
The lights flickered again.
And Reed whispered:
“Because Amelia wasn’t only running from us.””
May you like
He looked directly at Ruby.
“She was running because she discovered what Ruby really is.””
