Chapter 8: The Soldier Behind the Mask

General Harris had faced enemy soldiers on battlefields.

He had stood in front of explosions.

He had walked into situations where every person around him knew there was a chance they might not walk out.

But nothing prepared him for seeing betrayal standing in his own office.

Commander Victor Lane stood at the doorway.

Fifteen years.

Fifteen years beside him.

Fifteen years of briefings, missions, conversations, and trust.

And now the Phoenix insignia was visible on his uniform.

Ruby pressed closer to Harris.

“Who is he?””

The general didn’t answer immediately.

Because he didn’t know how to explain betrayal to a child.

Victor looked at Ruby.

“Your mother always underestimated how smart you were.””

Harris’s expression hardened.

“Do not speak to her.””

Victor looked back at him.

“You still protect everyone, Harris.””

“Yes.””

“Even when they’re the reason your life fell apart?””

The room became tense.

Daniel moved slightly toward Ruby.

Reed watched Victor carefully.

“You weren’t supposed to come here.””

Victor looked at him.

“And you weren’t supposed to survive.””

The words changed everything.

Harris noticed.

There was history between them.

“You two know each other.””

Reed gave a humorless laugh.

“We know each other very well.””

Victor stepped into the room.

The guards raised their weapons.

But Harris noticed something.

They were hesitating.

Not because they feared Victor.

Because they were confused.

The second-in-command of the entire headquarters was suddenly standing accused of being part of a secret organization.

Nobody knew who to trust.

Victor looked around.

“You’re all wondering if I’m the enemy.””

He smiled slightly.

“That’s exactly why Phoenix survived.””

Harris stared.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you never understood what you created.””

“I created nothing.””

Victor looked at him.

“Still saying that?””

“Yes.””

“After all these years?””

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

Victor sighed.

“That stubbornness is why Amelia loved you.””

Harris’s eyes narrowed.

“You knew Amelia.””

“I knew her better than you did.””

The sentence was cruel.

And Harris felt it.

“You were watching her.””

Victor didn’t deny it.

“I was protecting the project.””

“The project?””

Victor looked at Ruby.

“Yes.””

Ruby stepped back.

Harris moved with her.

“No.””

Victor looked at him.

“You don’t even know what she is.””

Harris’s voice became colder.

“She is my granddaughter.””

Victor shook his head.

“That’s exactly what Amelia wanted you to believe.””

The room exploded with tension.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re trying to confuse him.””

Victor looked at Daniel.

“You helped her hide.””

“Yes.””

“And now look where that got her.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“You don’t know where she is.””

“No.””

Victor smiled.

“But I know where she was going.””

Harris immediately focused.

“Where?””

Victor looked at him.

“Finally. The right question.””

“Answer me.””

Victor walked toward the table.

He picked up the old photograph.

The one showing Harris, Amelia, and the unknown man.

“You spent twenty years believing this was about revenge.””

He placed the photo down.

“It wasn’t.””

Harris stared.

“Then what was it?””

Victor tapped the photograph.

“Legacy.””

Nobody spoke.

Victor continued.

“Phoenix was never created to control people.””

Reed interrupted.

“Don’t lie.””

Victor looked at him.

“You always were dramatic, Marcus.””

“You destroyed lives.””

“You protected secrets.””

“I protected Amelia.””

Victor laughed quietly.

“No. You protected your guilt.””

Harris looked between them.

“Enough.””

Both men stopped.

He had heard enough half-truths.

Enough manipulation.

“You will tell me exactly what happened.””

Victor looked at him.

“Twenty-five years ago, you were chosen to lead a special division.””

“I never agreed.””

“Because they never told you.””

Harris frowned.

Victor continued.

“Phoenix was created using your reputation. Your authority. Your name.””

“To do what?””

“To identify threats before they happened.””

Harris looked disgusted.

“Surveillance.””

“Prevention.””

“Without permission.””

Victor said nothing.

That silence was an answer.

Harris looked away.

“And Amelia found out.””

“Yes.””

“What did she discover?””

Victor’s face changed.

“She discovered Phoenix had gone beyond its original purpose.””

“How far?””

Victor looked at Ruby.

“Far enough that they started watching their own people.””

The room became still.

“Including me.””

“Yes.””

Harris felt something inside him break.

The organization built using his name had become something he never intended.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Victor smiled sadly.

“Because by the time you would have believed me, you would have been removed.””

“Removed by who?””

Victor looked toward the ceiling.

“The same people who are still watching.””

Daniel frowned.

“You’re saying Phoenix has leadership above you?””

Victor nodded.

“Always did.””

Reed stepped forward.

“And you’re still protecting them.””

Victor looked at him.

“Someone has to.””

“No.””

Reed’s voice sharpened.

“Someone has to stop them.””

Harris looked at Reed.

“You knew?””

“I knew parts.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

Reed looked away.

“Because Amelia asked me not to.””

Harris laughed bitterly.

“Everyone seems to have made decisions for me.””

Nobody answered.

Because it was true.

Everyone had protected him by hiding things.

Everyone had believed they knew what was best.

And in the process, they had destroyed his family.

Ruby quietly spoke.

“My mom said something.””

Everyone turned.

Harris softened.

“What?””

“She said the truth was dangerous.””

Victor looked at her.

“She was right.””

Ruby shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone stared.

The little girl who had been silent for hours suddenly looked different.

Not fearless.

But determined.

“She said something else.””

Harris crouched down.

“What did she say?””

Ruby opened her backpack.

Her hands trembled as she pulled out a small notebook.

“I wasn’t supposed to show anyone.””

Victor immediately stepped forward.

“Stop her.””

Harris turned.

“Why?””

Victor’s face changed.

Because for the first time, he looked afraid.

“Because that notebook is what they’ve been looking for.””

Harris took it from Ruby carefully.

“What is it?””

Ruby whispered:

“Mom said it was the only thing that could prove you were innocent.””

The general opened the notebook.

Inside were handwritten notes.

Dates.

Names.

Locations.

And on the first page was a message from Amelia.

Dad, if Ruby gives you this, it means I failed to come back.

Harris closed his eyes.

Daniel looked away.

Reed lowered his head.

Victor stared at the notebook.

“You don’t understand what you’re holding.””

Harris looked at him.

“I understand enough.””

“No.””

Victor’s voice became urgent.

“If that notebook is real, people will kill for it.””

The room went quiet.

Ruby looked terrified.

Harris immediately closed the notebook.

“Nobody touches her.””

Victor looked at him.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Victor stepped closer.

“The notebook doesn’t just prove what Phoenix did.””

“Then what?””

“It proves who ordered it.””

Harris waited.

Victor looked at the notebook.

Then at Ruby.

And finally at him.

“It proves the person who created Phoenix.””

A pause.

“The person who signed the first order.””

Harris felt cold.

Because there was only one person who could have authorized something like that.

Someone with the highest level of power.

Someone whose name would change everything.

“Who?””

Victor didn’t answer.

Instead, every phone in the room suddenly rang at the same time.

The guards looked at their devices.

The office phones.

Even Ruby’s cracked phone.

All ringing together.

Harris stared.

Nobody moved.

Then Ruby slowly picked up her phone.

The screen showed an unknown caller.

She answered.

“Hello?””

A voice came through.

A voice she recognized.

Her face changed instantly.

“Mom?””

Harris moved closer.

“Ruby, put it on speaker.””

The little girl did.

Static filled the room.

Then Amelia’s voice whispered:

“Ruby, listen to me carefully.””

Everyone froze.

“She found you.””

Harris’s heart stopped.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then Amelia said:

“Your grandfather’s greatest enemy.””

The room became silent.

Harris looked around.

“Amelia?””

Her voice broke.

“Dad?””

For twenty years, he had imagined this moment.

But he never imagined hearing fear in her voice.

“I’m sorry.””

A sound came through the phone.

Like someone approaching.

Amelia whispered:

“You have to leave now.””

Harris tightened his grip on the phone.

“Where are you?””

Silence.

Then Amelia said:

“Dad…”

Her voice trembled.

“Don’t trust the person standing closest to you.””

Everyone looked around.

Slowly.

Victor.

Daniel.

Reed.

The guards.

Then the call cut.

One second later, the emergency alarm changed.

A new alert appeared.

Not from outside.

From inside.

The security system displayed one line:

*INTRUDER IDENTIFIED: GENERAL HARRIS.*

May you like

The entire headquarters locked down.

And every weapon in the building automatically aimed at the man who had spent his life protecting it.
