Chapter 7: The Truth Amelia Tried to Bury

The room went silent.

Not the quiet of peace.

The quiet before something breaks.

General Harris stared at Marcus Reed.

Twenty years of questions.

Twenty years of anger.

Twenty years of believing one person was responsible for destroying his family.

And now that person was standing directly in front of him.

Alive.

Calm.

Confident.

“You’re going to explain that sentence,” Harris said.

Reed looked almost amused.

“You still give orders like everyone is obligated to answer.””

“They usually are.””

“Not anymore.””

The guards moved closer.

Harris lifted his hand.

Nobody fired.

Not yet.

He needed answers.

Reed glanced at Ruby.

“She has no idea, does she?””

Harris stepped between them.

“Do not look at her.””

Reed’s expression changed slightly.

A small smile.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The father Amelia always wanted you to be.””

The words struck harder than Harris expected.

“Do not use my daughter’s name.””

Reed ignored the warning.

“She spent twenty years protecting that girl.””

Harris’s eyes narrowed.

“From you?””

Reed looked away.

“From everyone.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re lying.””

Reed looked at him.

“Daniel Cole.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“You remember me?””

“I remember everyone who helped Amelia betray the people who protected her.””

Harris turned.

“Betray?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Reed smiled.

“Still defending her?””

“Yes.””

“Even after what she discovered?””

The room became tense.

Harris looked between them.

“What did Amelia discover?””

Reed walked slowly into the room.

The guards immediately raised their weapons.

Harris watched him carefully.

“Stop.””

The guards lowered slightly.

Reed placed a small device on the table.

A recording.

“Twenty years ago, Amelia found something she was never supposed to find.””

Harris stared.

“What?””

Reed looked at him.

“The truth about Ruby.””

Ruby held tighter to Harris’s hand.

The general noticed.

He lowered his voice.

“Whatever you think you know, speak carefully.””

Reed nodded.

“Because she’s a child?””

“Because she’s my granddaughter.””

The word surprised even Harris.

Granddaughter.

He had said it aloud.

For the first time.

Ruby looked up at him.

Reed noticed.

“That’s what Amelia wanted.””

“What?””

“For you to finally accept her.””

Harris frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Reed pressed a button on the device.

A recording began.

Amelia’s voice filled the room.

“If you are hearing this, then Marcus has found you.””

Harris looked shocked.

“She knew?””

Reed stayed silent.

Amelia continued.

“Dad, if Marcus tells you Ruby is dangerous, don’t believe him.””

Ruby looked confused.

“Dangerous?””

Harris looked at her.

“No.””

But he didn’t sound certain.

Because he didn’t know the truth.

Amelia’s recording continued.

“Ruby is not a weapon. She is not a mistake. She is my daughter.””

The room remained still.

Then:

“But someone will try to convince you otherwise.””

The recording stopped.

Reed looked at Harris.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“You heard only the part she wanted you to hear.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You edited it.””

Reed smiled.

“Did I?””

Harris turned to the device.

“Can you verify?””

Daniel picked it up.

“I can try.””

Reed leaned against the table.

“You always trusted evidence.””

Harris looked at him.

“Yes.””

“Then you should know evidence can be created.””

The sentence reminded Harris of the forged document.

His fake signature.

His stolen identity.

His entire life being manipulated.

“Why are you here?””

Reed looked at Ruby.

“Because she needs to know the truth.””

Harris shook his head.

“No.””

Reed smiled.

“You don’t even know what the truth is.””

“I know enough.””

“Do you?””

The question irritated him.

But before he could answer, Daniel spoke.

“Marcus, if you cared about Amelia, you wouldn’t be standing here threatening her daughter.””

Reed’s expression darkened.

For the first time, emotion appeared.

Not anger.

Something closer to regret.

“I cared about Amelia more than anyone.””

“Then why did she run?””

Reed looked at Harris.

“Ask him.””

The room went silent.

Harris’s face hardened.

“You keep implying I’m responsible.””

“I’m saying Amelia believed you were.””

“Because you manipulated her.””

Reed shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Ruby.

“Because Amelia saw something.””

“What?””

Reed walked closer to the table.

“Your daughter discovered that Phoenix was created because of one person.””

Harris waited.

“Who?””

Reed looked directly at him.

“You.””

The words hit the room like an explosion.

The guards looked confused.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“That’s impossible.””

Reed ignored him.

“Twenty-five years ago, you signed the order that created Phoenix Division.””

Harris stared.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“I never approved that.””

Reed nodded.

“That’s what Amelia found.””

Harris’s mind raced.

Twenty-five years ago.

His career.

His assignments.

The classified operations.

There were gaps.

Missing years.

Files he had never been allowed to access.

But he had always believed it was normal.

Military secrets.

Need-to-know information.

Reed continued.

“You created a machine you no longer controlled.””

“I created nothing.””

“Then why did your signature authorize it?””

Again.

The signature.

Always the signature.

Harris felt anger rising.

“Because someone forged it.””

Reed looked at him.

“Exactly.””

The answer surprised him.

Reed continued.

“Someone used your name to create Phoenix.””

Harris stopped.

“So you admit it.””

“I never said otherwise.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Then what are you saying?””

Reed looked at Harris.

“I’m saying Amelia was wrong about one thing.””

“What?””

“She thought you were involved.””

A pause.

“She was wrong.””

Harris felt a strange mix of relief and anger.

“Then why did she leave?””

Reed looked down.

“Because she discovered the person who forged your signature.””

The room became silent.

“Who?”” Harris asked.

Reed looked toward the security cameras.

Then toward the hallway.

“Someone who still works in this building.””

Every person in the room froze.

Harris looked at the guards.

At the officers outside.

At the people who had worked beside him for years.

“No.””

Reed nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who?””

Reed didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Ruby.

“Your mother hid you because she knew they would use you.””

Ruby’s face changed.

“Use me for what?””

Reed was quiet.

Then:

“Because you are the only person who can unlock what Phoenix left behind.””

Harris immediately moved closer.

“Explain.””

Reed looked at him.

“Twenty-five years ago, Phoenix created a backup system.””

“A system?””

“A record.””

“Of what?””

“Everything.””

The general stared.

“Operations. Names. Orders. Evidence.””

Daniel understood first.

“And Ruby can access it?””

Reed nodded.

Harris looked at Ruby.

“No.””

Reed continued.

“Amelia discovered the system had one final safeguard.””

“What?””

“A biometric key.””

Harris’s expression changed.

“Don’t.””

Reed looked at Ruby.

“Your granddaughter is the key.””

Ruby stepped back.

“I don’t understand.””

Harris immediately turned toward Reed.

“You’re done.””

Reed didn’t move.

“You think you can protect her by hiding the truth?””

“Yes.””

“That’s exactly what Amelia did.””

The sentence stopped him.

Reed’s voice softened.

“She spent twenty years running.””

Harris said nothing.

“She moved every few months. Changed identities. Cut herself off from everyone she loved.””

A pause.

“And it still found her.””

Ruby’s eyes filled with tears.

“Where is my mom?””

Reed looked at her.

For the first time, he seemed genuinely sorry.

“I don’t know.””

Harris stepped forward.

“Then why are you here?””

Reed looked at the device.

“Because Amelia left one final message.””

He pressed a button.

A new recording appeared.

The screen showed Amelia.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Dad.””

Harris stopped.

“I’m sorry.””

His eyes filled.

“Not because I left.””

A pause.

“Because I waited too long to tell you the truth.””

The recording continued.

“If you are watching this, then Ruby is with you.””

Amelia took a breath.

“And that means they know.””

Harris leaned closer.

“Who?””

Amelia’s face became serious.

“The person who betrayed us.””

The screen flickered.

Then she said the words that made everyone in the room freeze.

“Dad, trust no one wearing your uniform.””

The video cut out.

Immediately, the door behind them opened.

A senior officer walked in.

Everyone turned.

Harris recognized him instantly.

His second-in-command.

The man who had served beside him for fifteen years.

“General,” the officer said.

His eyes moved to Ruby.

Then to Reed.

And finally to Harris.

“I was hoping you would never see that message.””

Harris stared.

May you like

Because the man standing in front of him was wearing his uniform.

And on his chest was the Phoenix insignia.
