Chapter 11: The Aunt Who Disappeared

“My mother's sister?””

Richard nodded.

“Evelyn and Elena were twins. They were separated when they were children, after their parents died. Evelyn was raised by the Whitmores. Elena was taken in by a family connected to the Ashfords.””

I stared at him.

“You expect me to believe that my mother had a twin sister who gave birth to my daughter, and nobody ever told me?””

“Your mother knew.””

“Then why didn't she tell me?””

“Because Elena disappeared before you were born.””

He glanced at Lily.

“And because the truth would have destroyed everything Evelyn was trying to protect.””

I looked at Daniel.

He was still pinned against the wall, blood soaking through his shirt.

“Tell me he's lying.””

Daniel met my eyes.

“Emily, I didn't know Elena was your mother's sister until a few months ago.””

“That's not what I asked.””

He swallowed.

“I didn't know Lily wasn't biologically yours.””

I felt as though the ground had vanished beneath my feet.

“What?””

Richard laughed softly.

“Your husband has been very busy keeping secrets.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That's not what I meant. I knew Lily was adopted through a private arrangement, but I believed the birth mother had consented. I didn't know she was Elena's child.””

I stared at him.

“You knew Lily wasn't biologically mine?””

He looked away.

“Yes.””

The word hit me harder than anything Richard had said.

I thought of the pregnancy test I'd held in our bathroom. The tears I'd cried when the doctor first placed Lily in my arms. The sleepless nights.

The tiny fingers wrapped around mine. The first time she'd smiled at me.

I'd never questioned whether she was mine.

She was my daughter.

That was all that mattered.

But Daniel had known something I didn't.

He had watched me fall in love with a child whose origins were being concealed from me.

“Why?”” I whispered.

Daniel's voice cracked.

“Because your mother left instructions that Lily had to be placed with you if Elena never returned.””

“Why me?””

“Because Evelyn believed you would protect her.””

I looked down at Lily.

Richard held out his hand again.

“Give her to me, Emily. I can tell you everything.””

“No.””

His expression hardened.

“You're making a mistake.””

“Then I'll make it myself.””

I turned and ran.

The man holding Daniel tried to intercept me, but Claire appeared from the darkness and struck him across the back with a metal pipe.

“Go!”” she shouted.

I sprinted toward the street.

Claire grabbed Daniel and dragged him free while Richard shouted orders behind us.

A car horn blared.

An old black sedan screeched to a stop beside the curb.

The passenger door flew open.

A woman with silver hair leaned across the seat.

“Get in!””

I didn't hesitate.

I climbed into the back with Lily.

Claire shoved Daniel into the front passenger seat, then jumped in behind me.

The driver accelerated before the doors had fully closed.

I stared at the woman in the front.

“Who are you?””

She met my eyes in the rearview mirror.

“My name is Helen Mercer. I've been trying to find you for eleven years.””

The attorney from the letter.

The woman who had vanished from her office.

“Where were you?””

“Hiding.””

“From Richard?””

“From all of them.””

She turned onto a narrow road bordered by trees.

“Your mother knew the truth about the children. She came to me when she discovered that the hospital records had been altered. We planned to expose Richard, but she died before we could finish.””

I held Lily closer.

“What does Elena have to do with this?””

Helen's expression tightened.

“Everything.””

She explained that Elena had been a nurse at St. Agnes Hospital. She had discovered that Richard Ashford was using the hospital to facilitate illegal adoptions and falsify birth records for wealthy clients.

When she confronted him, he threatened her.

She disappeared the same night.

“Your mother believed Elena was dead,” Helen continued.

“Then, shortly before Evelyn died, she received a letter from her sister. Elena claimed she had given birth to a daughter and that the child had been taken from her.””

“Lily.””

“Yes.””

I stared at my daughter.

“Why did my mother arrange for Lily to be placed with me?””

“Because Elena trusted her. And because Evelyn believed that if Lily were raised outside the Ashford family, Richard would never find her.””

I shook my head.

“But Daniel found her.””

Helen glanced at him.

“Daniel was ordered to find the child. His father believed Lily was the final heir. He wanted to control her before the trust became active.””

Daniel lowered his head.

“I didn't know the full story.””

Helen's voice was icy.

“You knew enough to keep Emily in the dark.””

He didn't argue.

I looked out the window.

The road curved through a stretch of woodland before opening onto a long driveway. At the end stood a sprawling stone house with ivy climbing its walls.

The Whitmore estate.

The home where I'd spent summers as a child.

The home I'd avoided for years because every room reminded me of my father.

Helen parked beside the front steps.

“Your mother sealed the room beneath the west wing after Thomas disappeared.””

“Why?””

“Because she discovered that someone had been living there.””

I turned toward her.

“Who?””

Helen opened her door.

“That's what we're about to find out.””

We entered through the side entrance. The house smelled of dust, old wood, and the faint trace of lavender my mother used to keep in her linen closet.

I stopped in the hallway.

For a moment, I could almost hear her voice calling me downstairs for dinner.

Helen led us toward the west wing.

Behind a bookcase, she revealed a narrow door with a brass lock.

I removed Lily's bracelet and examined the clasp.

A tiny metal key was concealed beneath the engraved name.

I inserted it into the lock.

The door opened with a soft click.

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

Daniel took a flashlight from his pocket.

“I'll go first.””

“No,” I said.

He looked at me.

“Emily—”

“You've had enough chances to lead me somewhere.””

I descended alone, carrying Lily.

The room below was small but carefully maintained. Shelves lined the walls, holding boxes of documents and old photographs. A narrow bed stood beneath a window that had been covered from the outside.

On the table lay a diary.

My mother's diary.

I opened it.

The first pages contained familiar entries about my childhood. Then, beginning eleven years earlier, her handwriting changed.

Thomas is alive.

I stopped.

The next entry was dated three days later.

Richard knows I have discovered the truth. He says he will take the children if I try to contact Thomas.

I turned the page.

Elena has returned. She says the baby is safe, but she cannot come home.

Another page.

The child is not the only secret. There is a fourth name in the records. A name Richard has spent years trying to erase.

My heart pounded.

I kept reading.

If Emily ever finds this diary, she must understand that Thomas did not abandon her. He was forced to disappear because he discovered what Richard had done to Elena.

The final entry was written in shaky handwriting.

The fourth child is alive. He has been living under our roof.

I stopped breathing.

A floorboard creaked above us.

Someone was moving through the house.

Then a man's voice called down the staircase.

“Emily?””

My father's voice.

Thomas Whitmore had come home.

I rushed toward the stairs.

“Dad?””

He appeared in the doorway, thinner than I remembered, his hair almost completely white. He leaned heavily on a cane, and tears filled his eyes when he saw me.

For a moment, I was a little girl again.

I ran into his arms, nearly crushing Lily between us.

He held me tightly.

“My girl,” he whispered.

“My beautiful girl.””

I sobbed against his shoulder.

“You let me think you were dead.””

“I know.””

“You let me bury you.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

He closed his eyes.

“Because if Richard had known I was alive, he would have killed you both.””

I pulled back.

“Both?””

His gaze shifted to Lily.

“Emily, there's something I need to tell you.””

I looked at the diary.

“The fourth child?””

Thomas nodded slowly.

“I hid him here for years.””

“Who is he?””

Before he could answer, footsteps sounded behind him.

Daniel stood at the top of the stairs, his face drained of color.

Thomas turned.

For the first time since he'd entered the room, genuine fear crossed his face.

“No,” he whispered.

Daniel stepped into the light.

“Hello, Thomas.””

Thomas tightened his grip on his cane.

“You were supposed to be dead.””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“So were you.””

Then he looked at me.

“Emily, there's something your father never told you.””

He took a folded photograph from his coat.

It showed two men standing beside a hospital bed.

One was Thomas.

The other was Richard Ashford.

Between them lay a newborn baby.

On the back, someone had written:

*THE FOURTH CHILD — DANIEL ASHFORD.*

I stared at the photograph.

Then I looked at Daniel.

“You were the fourth child?””

He nodded.

“And the child who was exchanged?””

He shook his head.

“No, Emily. I was the child who was returned.””

Thomas gripped the railing.

“Daniel, don't.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You've hidden the truth for long enough.””

Then he turned back to me.

“Your mother didn't just protect you from Richard.””

May you like

His eyes filled with tears.

“She protected you from me.””
