The Woman Behind Me / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9: The Father Who Came Back from the Dead

“Put the baby down, Emily.””

Richard Ashford's voice was calm, almost gentle.

That was what frightened me most.

He stood at the mouth of the tunnel with his gun raised, rainwater dripping from his coat. Behind him, two men blocked the passage back to the station.

Daniel lay against the wall, one hand pressed to his bleeding side.

Claire screamed his name.

Noah stepped in front of us.

“Don't move,” Richard warned him.

“I've already lost one son to your stubbornness. I won't lose another.””

Noah's jaw tightened.

“You never had me.””

Richard smiled faintly.

“I paid for your upbringing. I arranged your education. I made sure you had every opportunity a boy could want.””

“You arranged for me to disappear.””

“I arranged for you to survive.””

Noah laughed without humor.

“You took me from my mother.””

“I took you away from a woman who intended to destroy everything I built.””

I held Lily against my chest and backed toward the metal chest.

Richard's gaze followed every movement.

“Emily, this doesn't need to end badly.””

“You shot Daniel.””

“He'll live if he learns to stop interfering.””

Daniel struggled to sit up.

“Father, leave her alone.””

Richard turned toward him.

“You've disappointed me for the last time.””

“You lied to all of us.””

“I gave you a life.””

“You gave me a prison.””

Richard's face hardened.

Then he pointed the gun at Daniel again.

Claire rushed toward her husband, but Noah caught her arm.

“Don't,” he whispered.

She shook him off.

“He's bleeding!””

“And Richard wants you to run toward him.””

Richard watched them with amusement.

“Your brother is clever, Claire. It's a pity he learned to use that intelligence against his own family.””

Noah stepped forward.

“You keep talking about family as if you haven't spent your life destroying ours.””

Richard's expression turned cold.

“Family is not something you're entitled to simply because of a blood test.””

“Then why are you so obsessed with Lily's blood?””

For the first time, Richard's smile disappeared.

He looked at my daughter.

“Because her birth activates the final clause of the trust. Once she is legally recognized as the first eligible female heir, the estate transfers beyond my control.””

“That's what you're afraid of?”” I demanded.

“Losing money?””

“Money?”” He laughed.

“You still think this is about money.””

He moved closer.

“The trust contains the original records of my father's crimes. The deeds to properties that were stolen. The names of officials who accepted bribes. The evidence that could destroy every company I own.””

“Then why not destroy it yourself?””

“Because the trust was designed to make that impossible.””

He nodded toward the ledger.

“Three separate pieces. Three witnesses. Three heirs. Your mother thought she was clever.””

“She was,” I said.

Richard's eyes flashed.

“She was a fool who believed that love could defeat power.””

He pointed the gun at Lily again.

“Give me the bracelet.””

I looked down at the silver band around her wrist.

“No.””

“Emily.””

“No.””

His voice sharpened.

“Do you understand what will happen if you refuse?””

“I understand exactly what happens when people like you get everything they want.””

I shifted Lily higher against my chest.

“You took my mother from me. You took my sister. You took my brother.

You made everyone believe they were dead. You don't get to take my daughter, too.””

For several seconds, Richard stared at me.

Then he laughed softly.

“You sound just like Evelyn.””

He reached into his coat and removed a small vial.

“Your mother was given this before she died. The doctors said she had respiratory failure. They never tested for the substance that caused it.””

My stomach turned.

“You killed her.””

“I gave her a choice.””

“What choice?””

“Sign away her claim to the trust, or watch her children disappear.””

He held the vial up to the light.

“She refused.””

I felt something inside me harden.

“You murdered her because she wouldn't give you what you wanted.””

Richard shrugged.

“She made her decision.””

Noah lunged.

The gun fired.

The bullet struck the concrete beside his foot.

I screamed and dropped to the floor, covering Lily with my body.

Claire grabbed a metal pipe from beside the chest and swung it at Richard's arm.

The gun clattered across the ground.

Noah tackled him.

They crashed into the wall, fists striking concrete as Richard fought to regain control.

“Get the documents!”” Noah shouted.

I scrambled toward the chest.

Daniel, pale and shaking, reached for the envelope he'd dropped.

“Emily!””

I grabbed it.

Then the tunnel lights went out.

A second gunshot exploded in the darkness.

Someone shouted.

I heard Claire cry out.

Then a hand seized my wrist.

“Come with me!””

I twisted away.

“Let go!””

“Emily, it's me!””

Daniel.

I recognized his voice.

He pulled me toward a narrow opening behind the chest while Noah fought Richard in the darkness.

“Where are we going?”” I demanded.

“There's another exit.””

“What about Claire?””

“She knows the way.””

I hesitated.

Daniel looked at me desperately.

“Emily, please. I won't ask you to trust me. Just let me get Lily out of here.””

I followed him through the passage.

The tunnel narrowed until we had to move sideways. Daniel stumbled twice, leaving smears of blood on the wall.

At last, we emerged into a disused basement beneath a row of warehouses.

Rain rattled against a metal door.

Daniel leaned against the wall, breathing hard.

I stared at the blood spreading across his shirt.

“You need an ambulance.””

“No.””

“Daniel, you're bleeding.””

“If we call the police, my father will know where we are.””

“You could die.””

He gave me a tired smile.

“Would that make you feel better?””

I recoiled.

“Don't you dare.””

His smile vanished.

“I'm sorry.””

I looked at Lily.

She was crying now, her tiny fists clenched against my chest.

Daniel reached toward her, then stopped himself.

“I never wanted her to be part of this.””

“But you knew she would be.””

“Yes.””

“And you married me knowing that my family was connected to your father's crimes.””

“Yes.””

“And you kept the truth from me for two years.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

I wanted to hit him.

I wanted to scream until every lie he'd ever told me fell apart.

Instead, I asked the question that had haunted me since the airport.

“Did you ever love me?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I loved you before I knew who you were. I loved you when you were pregnant. I loved you when you gave birth to Lily. I loved you every time I came home and watched you sleep.””

“Then why did you betray me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Becoming my father.””

He looked down at the blood on his hands.

“And every time I chose silence, I became more like him.””

For a moment, the only sound was the rain.

Then Daniel reached into his pocket and removed a small key.

“My father has a private archive beneath the Ashford estate. The original trust documents are there. If we get them, we can prove everything.””

“Why haven't you done that already?””

“Because the archive requires two keys.””

He placed the key in my hand.

“One belongs to my father. The other belonged to your mother.””

I stared at the brass key.

“Where is hers?””

Daniel looked at Lily's bracelet.

“Your mother hid it in the engraving.””

I touched the silver band.

The name.

The crescent-shaped mark.

The tiny clasp.

Everything had been there all along.

Before I could ask another question, a phone rang.

Daniel answered.

A man's voice came through the speaker.

“Mr. Ashford, we have a problem.””

Daniel straightened despite the pain.

“What happened?””

“The woman escaped.””

“Which woman?””

A pause.

Then the voice answered.

“Claire Ashford.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The man continued.

“She took the original birth records. But that's not the worst of it.””

“What?””

“We found a second file in the chapel. It contains the name of the person who authorized the transfer of the fourth child.””

Daniel looked at me.

“What name?””

The man hesitated.

“Your mother, sir.””

The call ended.

I stared at Daniel.

“My mother authorized the transfer?””

He shook his head.

“No. That can't be right.””

I held up the envelope we'd taken from the tunnel.

The one that supposedly contained the truth about the fourth child.

Its seal had broken during the escape.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

At the top were the words:

*DECLARATION OF VOLUNTARY TRANSFER.*

Below them was my mother's signature.

And beneath her signature was a second name.

*THOMAS WHITMORE.*

My adoptive father.

The man who had raised me.

The man who had taught me to ride a bicycle, who had held my hand at my mother's funeral, who had promised me that our family had no secrets.

I stared at the document until the letters blurred.

Then I saw the date.

The transfer had taken place three days after my birth.

At the bottom of the page, someone had written a final sentence in red ink.

The fourth child was not given away. The fourth child was exchanged.

I looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?””

He didn't answer.

He was staring at the signature beneath my mother's.

His face had gone completely white.

“Emily,” he whispered, “I think we've been looking for the wrong child.””

A phone vibrated in my pocket.

An unknown number.

A message appeared.

*You want to know what happened to the fourth baby?*

A second message followed.

*Look at your daughter.*

I stared at Lily.

Then the phone rang.

This time, the caller ID displayed a name that made my blood turn to ice.

*THOMAS WHITMORE.*

My father.

The man who had been dead for eleven years.

I answered with trembling fingers.

A man's voice whispered through the phone.

“Emily, if you want to save Lily, you must stop trusting the people who claim to be your family.””

May you like

A pause.

Then he said, “Because the child you're holding isn't the baby your mother brought home.””
