The Woman Behind Me / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14: The Truth Beneath the Chapel

I made her repeat it three times.

“Lily is my daughter,” Elena said.

“Biologically. I gave birth to her, but she was never meant to be raised by me.””

“That doesn't make sense.””

“I know.””

“You told me she wasn't yours.””

“I told you Richard wanted you to believe she wasn't yours.””

I looked at Daniel.

He had heard enough to understand that something had changed.

“Where are you?”” I demanded.

“Under the old chapel. There's a room beneath the altar. Richard is there with Claire and Noah.””

My blood turned cold.

“Is Lily with him?””

“Yes.””

“Then why are you calling me instead of going after her?””

“Because the room is locked, and the only key that opens it is in your possession.””

I looked down at the brass key Thomas had given me.

“How do you know about this key?””

“Because I was the one who hid it.””

The line went dead.

For several seconds, neither Daniel nor I spoke.

Then he started the car.

“Emily, we need to think this through.””

“No.””

“Richard has armed men. We don't know whether Elena is telling the truth.””

“I don't care.””

“You should.””

I turned toward him.

“My daughter is with a man who has murdered people to protect a fortune. My sister and brother are tied up somewhere beneath a chapel. My father is bleeding in an ambulance. I have spent my entire life being told to wait, to trust, to let other people decide what's best for me.””

I leaned forward.

“I'm done waiting.””

Daniel nodded once.

“Then I'll follow your lead.””

The old chapel stood on a hill surrounded by bare trees. Its stone walls were cracked, and the stained-glass windows had been boarded over. A rusted gate hung open.

A woman waited beside the entrance.

She was in her late fifties, with dark hair streaked with silver and a scar running from her left temple to her cheek.

When she saw me, she began to cry.

“Emily.””

I stopped several feet away.

“Are you Elena Voss?””

“Yes.””

“Did you give birth to me?””

Her face crumpled.

“No.””

“Did you give birth to Lily?””

She nodded.

“Then explain.””

Elena looked toward the chapel.

“Your mother and I made a promise. When Richard discovered that the trust named Evelyn's descendants as its protected heirs, he began searching for every child connected to her. He wanted to control them before they could claim what was theirs.””

“And Lily?””

“I gave birth to her six months before you did.””

I stared at her.

“That would make her older than she is.””

Elena shook her head.

“The records were altered. Richard had the hospital list her birth date as several months later. He planned to raise her himself, but your mother discovered what he was doing.””

She wiped her eyes.

“Evelyn arranged for Lily to be placed with you. She believed that if Lily grew up beside the child whose identity had been erased, the truth would eventually come out.””

I felt dizzy.

“Whose identity was erased?””

Elena looked directly at me.

“Yours.””

I remembered the audio recording.

Richard's voice saying that I was the original heir.

I remembered my mother's diary, the hidden room, and the birth record bearing Thomas's signature.

Elena continued.

“You were born to Evelyn and Thomas. You were the first child named in the trust. But Richard changed your records, then arranged for another baby to be raised in your place.””

“Daniel?””

“No. Daniel was a separate child. Richard used him to control the Ashford family. Your identity was changed so that the trust would appear to belong to a child he could manipulate.””

I struggled to understand.

“Then why did my mother raise me?””

“Because she knew who you were. She never believed Richard could keep you from her forever.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“She knew?””

“Yes. She loved you as her daughter, because you were her daughter.””

Elena took a breath.

“Richard's plan was to make the trust pass through Lily. He believed he could control her through you. But Evelyn included a safeguard. If the original heir's identity was ever restored, every fraudulent transfer would be void.””

“And that's why he's holding Lily.””

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where are Claire and Noah?””

“Below the altar.””

We entered the chapel.

Behind the altar was a narrow staircase descending into a stone chamber. The air smelled of damp earth and candle wax.

A single light burned at the far end.

Richard stood beside a table.

Claire and Noah were tied to two chairs. Lily lay in a padded carrier nearby, crying softly.

I rushed toward her.

Richard raised his gun.

“Stop.””

I froze.

He smiled.

“I'm glad you came.””

“Let my family go.””

“Of course. Once you've signed the documents.””

He pushed a stack of papers across the table.

The first page transferred control of the trust to Richard Ashford. The second declared that I relinquished all claims to the Whitmore estate. The third named Lily as his legal ward.

I looked at him.

“You want me to give you my daughter?””

“I want you to acknowledge the truth. Lily is the child I selected to inherit.””

“She isn't yours.””

“Blood is a complicated thing, Emily. You've learned that by now.””

Claire struggled against her restraints.

“Don't sign anything!””

Richard struck her across the face.

I lunged forward, but Daniel caught my arm.

“Not yet,” he whispered.

Richard pointed the gun at Claire.

“Sign.””

I picked up the pen.

Then I noticed the table.

A small recorder sat beside the documents, its red light blinking.

Richard was recording everything.

He wanted a confession. A signature. Something he could use to prove that I had voluntarily surrendered my rights.

I looked at the papers.

“Before I sign, I want to know why you killed my mother.””

Richard's smile faded.

“Your mother was a sentimental woman who couldn't understand that power must be protected.””

“So you poisoned her?””

“She refused to cooperate.””

“And Thomas?””

“He was a coward who ran.””

I glanced at Elena.

She gave the smallest nod.

I understood.

The recorder was capturing every word.

I continued.

“And the children you stole?””

“Necessary.””

“The falsified records?””

“Necessary.””

“The money you paid the hospital?””

Richard leaned forward.

“You don't understand the world you were born into.””

“No,” I said.

“But I'm beginning to understand the man who destroyed it.””

I pushed the papers back.

“I won't sign.””

Richard raised the gun toward Lily.

Daniel moved.

He struck Richard's wrist, and the gun fired into the ceiling. Elena rushed toward the baby while I grabbed a heavy brass candlestick from the table.

I swung it at Richard's arm.

He staggered.

Claire kicked her chair sideways, crashing into the man guarding Noah. Daniel seized the fallen gun and pointed it at Richard.

“It's over.””

Richard laughed.

“You won't shoot me.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“But I will make sure you never touch another child.””

Noah freed himself and grabbed the recorder from the table.

“It's all here,” he said.

“His confession. The transfers. The admissions.””

Richard's face twisted with fury.

“You think anyone will believe you?””

A voice came from the staircase.

“I think they'll believe me.””

Helen Mercer appeared with two uniformed officers behind her.

More footsteps followed.

This time, the police were real.

Richard looked around the chamber, searching for an escape.

He lunged toward Lily.

I threw myself between them.

He caught my shoulder and shoved me aside, reaching for the carrier.

Daniel tackled him to the floor.

The gun slid away.

Richard fought like an animal, striking Daniel's wounded side. I grabbed Lily and stumbled backward while Claire and Noah rushed to help Daniel.

The officers pulled Richard away and forced him to the ground.

As they handcuffed him, he stared at me.

“You think this is over?””

I held Lily against my chest.

“No,” I said.

“I think it's finally beginning.””

He smiled.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“Ask him what happened to the original heir's mother.””

Daniel went still.

I turned toward him.

“What does he mean?””

Richard laughed as the officers dragged him up the stairs.

“Ask your husband why Evelyn died believing her son had betrayed her.””

The chamber fell silent.

Daniel looked at me, his face pale.

“Emily, there's something else you need to know.””

I shook my head.

“Not another secret.””

“I know.””

He swallowed.

“Your mother didn't die because she refused to sign the trust away.””

He looked toward the stairs where Richard had disappeared.

“She died because I gave him the key.””

I stared at my husband.

The man who had promised to protect me.

The man who had lied about his past.

The man who had helped bring my daughter into the world.

And the man who might have been responsible for my mother's death.

May you like

“Tell me everything,” I said.

This time, he didn't look away.
