Chapter 1: The Woman Behind the Curtain
“Mom?””
The word left Aaliyah’s mouth before she could stop it.
For twenty-two years, she had believed her biological mother was dead.
Now, on the brightest stage of her graduation ceremony, the woman everyone had buried in memory was standing ten feet away from her.
The auditorium went silent.
Not the normal silence that came when a speaker paused.
This was different.
Hundreds of people stopped breathing at once.
Aaliyah stood beneath the white stage lights in her black graduation gown and gold stole, her long braids falling over her shoulders. Beside her, Renee’s perfectly arranged smile had disappeared.
Derrick looked as though someone had struck him.
Monique stood near the burgundy curtain, trembling.
She looked exhausted. Her dark coat hung loosely from her shoulders, and both hands were wrapped around a sealed evidence folder.
Aaliyah stared at her face.
There were differences.
Monique looked older than the photographs Aaliyah remembered. Her cheeks were thinner. Her eyes were surrounded by sleepless shadows.
But the eyes were the same.
Aaliyah knew them.
Somewhere deep inside her, before logic could catch up, something recognized her.
“Mom?”” Aaliyah whispered again.
Renee reached for Aaliyah’s arm.
“Aaliyah,” Renee said sharply, “don't.””
Aaliyah pulled away.
Derrick turned toward Monique.
His voice came out barely above a whisper.
“They told us you died.””
Monique didn't answer immediately.
She looked at Derrick.
Then at Aaliyah.
Finally, her eyes settled on Renee.
“I know what they told you,” Monique said.
Renee's fingers tightened around the fabric of her burgundy dress.
“This isn't the place for this,” Renee said.
Monique took one step forward.
“It is exactly the place.””
Derrick shook his head.
“Monique, where have you been?””
Renee interrupted.
“Derrick, security needs to remove her.””
Monique gave a humorless smile.
“You still like giving orders, Renee.””
A murmur rolled through the audience.
Aaliyah looked between the three adults.
“Dad,” she said, “who is she?””
Derrick swallowed.
“She’s…”
His voice broke.
Monique finished the sentence for him.
“I’m your mother.””
Aaliyah's eyes filled instantly.
The cameras were still pointed toward the stage.
Parents who had been smiling moments earlier now held their phones motionless.
Renee stepped between Aaliyah and Monique.
“You don't know what you're saying.””
Monique lifted the sealed folder.
“I know exactly what I'm saying.””
Her hands shook harder.
“I didn't survive an accident.””
She looked directly at Renee.
“I survived her.””
Renee backed away.
“Put that down.””
“No.””
“Renee,” Derrick said, his voice changing, “what is in that folder?””
Renee didn't look at him.
“Nothing.””
Monique laughed softly.
“That's what you said twenty-two years ago.””
Aaliyah felt the air leave her lungs.
“Twenty-two years?””
Monique stepped closer.
“I tried to come home.””
Derrick stared at her.
“When?””
“After the hospital.””
Renee's face went pale.
Monique raised the folder.
“And I brought proof.””
She broke the seal.
Aaliyah saw the corner of an official document.
Before she could read a single word, Renee lunged.
“Give me that!””
Derrick caught Renee's wrist.
“Renee!””
The folder slipped sideways.
Aaliyah stared at the hidden first page.
“What did she do to you?””
Monique looked at Renee.
Her lips parted.
But before she could answer, someone in the front row screamed.
And every head in the auditorium turned toward the same thing.
A second sealed envelope had fallen from inside Monique's folder.
It landed at Aaliyah's feet.

Her name was written across it.
*AALIYAH CARTER.*
