Chapter 2: The Envelope With My Name
Nobody moved.
The envelope lay on the stage between Aaliyah's shoes.
Her name stared back at her in black ink.
Aaliyah bent slowly and picked it up.
Renee's voice cracked across the auditorium.
“Don't open that.””
Aaliyah looked up.
For the first time in her life, Renee sounded afraid.
Not angry.
Not disappointed.
Afraid.
Aaliyah turned toward Derrick.
“Dad?””
Derrick was still holding Renee's wrist.
He released it.
“Let her open it.””
Renee stared at him.
“Derrick, you have no idea what you're doing.””
“No,” Derrick said quietly.
“I don't.””
Monique stepped closer.
“I've waited a long time for this.””
Aaliyah's fingers struggled with the envelope.
The paper felt strangely thick.
She looked at Monique.
“You really are my mother?””
Monique nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why did everybody tell me you were dead?””
Monique's eyes filled with tears.
“Because somebody needed you to believe I couldn't come back.””
Renee shook her head.
“She abandoned you.””
Monique snapped her gaze toward her.
“You know that's a lie.””
“You left,” Renee said.
“You made sure I couldn't return.””
Derrick stepped forward.
“Stop.””
Both women looked at him.
Derrick's face had changed.
The shock was giving way to something heavier.
Memory.
Questions.
Anger.
He pointed toward the envelope.
“What does it say?””
Monique looked at Aaliyah.
“It tells you what happened before the accident.””
Renee immediately said, “There was an accident.””
Monique shook her head.
“There was a crime.””
Aaliyah's hands froze.
A camera operator near the stage whispered something to another crew member.
The graduation announcer stood behind the podium, completely lost.
Aaliyah could hear her own breathing.
She tore the envelope open.
Inside was a single photograph.
She pulled it out.
Her eyes widened.
It showed Derrick.
Young.
Maybe twenty-seven.
He was standing beside Monique outside what looked like a hospital.
Aaliyah stared at it.
“Dad…”
Derrick took one look at the photograph.
His face drained of color.
“I've never seen that.””
Monique whispered, “Yes, you have.””
Derrick looked at her.
“When?””
“Three days before I disappeared.””
Renee stepped forward.
“She's manipulating you.””
Aaliyah turned.
“Then explain the picture.””
Renee opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Aaliyah looked down.
There was writing on the back of the photograph.
Her eyes moved across the handwritten words.
*If they tell you I died, ask your father who signed the papers.*
Aaliyah's stomach dropped.
She slowly looked at Derrick.
“Who signed the papers?””
Derrick didn't answer.
“Dad.””
“I don't remember.””
Monique shook her head.
“You do.””
“I don't.””
“You were there.””
Renee suddenly grabbed the photograph.
Aaliyah pulled it away.
“Don't touch me!””
The words echoed through the auditorium.
Renee stopped.
Aaliyah had never spoken to her that way.
Derrick stared at his wife.
“Renee,” he said, “what is she talking about?””
Renee's expression hardened.
“She's been gone for twenty-two years. She walks into our daughter's graduation with a folder and a photograph, and suddenly we're supposed to believe every word she says?””
Monique held up the evidence folder.
“Not every word.””
She tapped the sealed documents inside.
“The evidence.””
Derrick looked at the folder.
“What evidence?””
Monique's eyes never left Renee.
“Medical records.””
Renee went completely still.
“Police records.””
Her breathing changed.
“Insurance records.””
Derrick whispered, “Renee…”
“And one document,” Monique said, “that has your signature on it.””
Aaliyah's heart pounded.
“What document?””
Monique looked at her.
“The one that explains why I was never allowed to see you again.””
Renee suddenly stepped backward.
Derrick noticed.
“Why did you move?””
“I didn't.””
“You did.””
Renee shook her head.
“This woman is sick.””
Monique's voice became quiet.
“I was sick.””
She swallowed.
“After what happened to me, I spent years wondering whether my daughter would ever know the truth.””
Aaliyah's eyes burned.
“Why now?””
Monique looked toward the graduation audience.
“Because today you're old enough to decide for yourself who you believe.””
Aaliyah looked down at the photograph again.
Then she noticed something she hadn't seen before.
Behind the younger Monique stood a man in a dark suit.
His face was partially hidden.
But his hand was visible.
And on his finger was a distinctive gold ring.
Aaliyah slowly turned toward Derrick.
He was wearing the same ring.
Derrick saw it.
His face collapsed.
“No,” he whispered.
May you like
Monique nodded.
“That ring is why I know you were there.””
