Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew

The old man stood beneath the auditorium lights.

He looked at Monique.

Monique looked back.

Neither moved.

Derrick's voice was low.

“Who are you?””

The man slowly lowered his briefcase.

“My name is Calvin Walker.””

Renee closed her eyes.

Aaliyah looked at her.

“Walker?””

Calvin nodded.

“Renee was my daughter.””

Derrick stared at Renee.

“You never told me that.””

Renee whispered, “I was going to.””

“When?””

She didn't answer.

Calvin looked at Monique.

“You shouldn't have come here.””

Monique's hands trembled.

“You said that twenty-two years ago.””

“And you should have listened.””

Derrick stepped forward.

“You threatened her?””

Calvin looked at him.

“I protected my family.””

“From what?””

“From scandal.””

Monique laughed bitterly.

“That's what you called it?””

Calvin's expression hardened.

“You were going to expose everything.””

“I was going to expose what you did.””

Aaliyah stepped between them.

“What did he do?””

Calvin looked at her.

For the first time, his expression changed.

Recognition.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You're Aaliyah.””

She froze.

“How do you know my name?””

Calvin glanced at Renee.

Renee looked away.

Derrick moved closer to him.

“You knew her before today?””

Calvin said nothing.

Derrick grabbed the front of his jacket.

“Answer me.””

Detective Harris stepped between them.

“Mr. Carter.””

Derrick released him.

Calvin straightened his jacket.

“I knew about the child.””

Aaliyah's voice shook.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Before I was born?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Calvin looked at Monique.

“She knew too much.””

Monique's face hardened.

“I knew what you were planning.””

Calvin's jaw tightened.

“You had no right.””

“You had no right to decide what happened to my daughter.””

Aaliyah looked at Renee.

“Did you help him?””

Renee began crying again.

“Yes.””

Derrick stared at her.

The answer seemed to hurt more than anything else.

“You knew?””

Renee nodded.

“I knew.””

“You helped him take her from Monique?””

“I thought I was saving her.””

“You forged my signature.””

“Yes.””

“You changed the birth certificate.””

“Yes.””

“You told me she died.””

Renee covered her face.

“Yes.””

Derrick stepped backward.

Aaliyah looked at him.

“Dad…”

He shook his head.

“I don't understand.””

Monique stepped closer.

“You don't remember because Calvin made sure you wouldn't.””

Calvin snapped.

“Enough.””

Detective Harris turned toward him.

“Sit down.””

Calvin didn't move.

The detective raised a hand.

“Now.””

Calvin slowly sat in the front-row seat.

Aaliyah couldn't take her eyes off him.

“What happened the night my mother disappeared?””

Monique answered.

“I found out Calvin was using Derrick's name to move money through accounts.””

Derrick stared.

“What?””

Monique continued.

“He needed someone else to take the blame.””

Calvin shook his head.

“That is not true.””

“You forged financial records.””

“No.””

“You threatened me.””

“No.””

“You tried to make it look like Derrick was involved.””

Derrick's face tightened.

“Was I?””

Monique looked at him.

“No.””

Calvin suddenly laughed.

“You still believe her?””

Derrick turned.

“What are you talking about?””

Calvin leaned forward.

“Ask her why she never told you the whole story.””

Monique went silent.

Aaliyah noticed.

“What aren't you telling us?””

Monique looked at her.

“I wanted to protect you.””

“From what?””

Monique swallowed.

“From something that happened before you were born.””

Renee whispered, “Don't.””

Aaliyah turned toward her.

“I'm done being protected.””

The auditorium had become completely still.

Even the graduation staff had stopped moving.

Aaliyah faced her mother.

“Tell me.””

Monique looked at Derrick.

Then at Calvin.

Finally, she looked at Aaliyah.

“The night you were born…”

She stopped.

Derrick whispered, “What?””

Monique's eyes filled with tears.

“You weren't supposed to survive.””

Aaliyah's face went blank.

Renee covered her mouth.

Derrick stared.

Calvin stood abruptly.

“No.””

Detective Harris turned toward him.

“Sit down.””

Calvin ignored him.

Monique stepped closer to Aaliyah.

“Someone tried to make sure you never left that hospital.””

Aaliyah could barely breathe.

“Who?””

Monique looked at Calvin.

Then at Renee.

Then back at Aaliyah.

“I don't know which one of them gave the order.””

Renee suddenly shouted:

“It wasn't me!””

Everyone turned.

Renee was shaking violently.

“I never wanted her dead.””

Derrick stared at her.

“Then who did?””

Renee looked at Calvin.

Calvin's expression hardened.

Renee whispered:

“He did.””

Calvin's face changed.

“Renee.””

“You told me she had to disappear.””

“I told you to protect her.””

“You told me she couldn't live.””

Calvin stood.

Detective Harris reached for his arm.

Calvin pulled away.

“You don't understand.””

Aaliyah stared at him.

“What don't I understand?””

Calvin looked directly at her.

His voice dropped to a whisper.

“Your mother wasn't the only person who survived that night.””

He opened his briefcase.

Inside was a stack of photographs.

The top photograph showed a newborn baby wrapped in a white hospital blanket.

Aaliyah stepped closer.

There was a handwritten note beside the baby.

*Baby Girl — Carter*

But beneath it was another name.

Aaliyah read it.

Then she looked up at Monique.

“Mom…”

Monique's face had gone completely pale.

Aaliyah held up the photograph.

“Why does this say there were two babies?””
