Chapter 5: The Marriage That Started With a Lie

I didn't sleep that night.

At 5:30 a.m., I was still sitting at the kitchen island, staring at the photograph Patricia had brought.

Daniel's handwriting was unmistakable.

I had seen it on birthday cards, anniversary notes, and the little reminders he used to leave beside my coffee.

Now those same familiar letters looked like evidence.

Renee had gone home to coordinate with the forensic team, but she had left a secure copy of the documents on my laptop.

At 6:12 a.m., my phone rang.

Daniel.

I watched it vibrate twice before answering.

“Where are you?”” I asked.

“Outside your building.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why?””

“Because I need to tell you the truth.””

“Then come upstairs.””

Twenty minutes later, the elevator doors opened.

Daniel stepped into my penthouse wearing yesterday's suit. His tie was loose, his eyes bloodshot, and his hair looked as if he'd been running his hands through it all night.

He stopped when he saw the photograph on the counter.

“Where did you get that?””

“Your mother.””

His face changed.

“She shouldn't have brought you that.””

“Why? Is it fake?””

He looked away.

I pointed toward the chair.

“Sit down.””

He remained standing.

“Nia, I need you to understand something. When we first met, I didn't know who you were.””

I stared at him.

“That's not what I asked.””

“I know.””

“Did you know about Hayes Capital before we got married?””

He swallowed.

“Yes.””

The answer was so quiet I almost didn't hear it.

I gripped the edge of the counter.

“How long?””

“Brielle found out during the investment negotiations.””

“And you knew?””

“I knew you were connected to the company. I didn't know the full extent of your ownership.””

I laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the truth was somehow worse than I had imagined.

“You knew I was wealthy.””

“I knew you had money.””

“And you still married me?””

He stepped closer.

“I fell in love with you.””

“Then why did you write that the Hayes investment changed everything for your family?””

Daniel stared at the photograph.

“Because my father had just died. The company was collapsing. My mother was terrified we would lose everything.””

“So you saw me as an opportunity.””

“No!””

His voice rose.

Then he caught himself.

“I was confused. I was under pressure. Brielle kept telling me that if I married you, our families could build something together.””

“Our families?””

He nodded slowly.

“She believed your investment group would eventually increase its position in Carter Dynamics. She thought our marriage would make that relationship permanent.””

I looked at him.

“Did you tell her you loved me?””

“Yes.””

“Did you tell your mother?””

“Yes.””

“Did either of them believe you?””

He didn't answer.

I pulled out the chair and sat down.

“Daniel, I need you to tell me exactly what happened before our wedding.””

He took a shaky breath.

“Brielle introduced me to Samuel. He said there were ways to protect the family business if Hayes Capital increased its investment. He suggested a long-term voting agreement between our families.””

“And you agreed?””

“I agreed to discuss it.””

“Did you ever sign anything?””

“No. Not before the wedding.””

I slid the document Renee had found across the counter.

“Then explain this.””

Daniel read the agreement.

His face turned pale.

“I signed this last year.””

“Your mother said you thought it was an estate document.””

He nodded.

“Samuel told me it was a standard arrangement to protect family assets.””

“Did you read it?””

He looked ashamed.

“Not properly.””

I stared at him.

“You signed a document affecting my shares without telling me?””

“I didn't know it affected your shares.””

“You didn't know because you didn't care enough to read it.””

He flinched.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he pulled a folded paper from his jacket.

“I brought something.””

He placed it on the counter.

It was a bank statement.

The account belonged to Northbridge Strategic Partners.

A transfer of $18.6 million had been deposited into it.

But beneath the transaction details was another name.

*Carter Dynamics Employee Benefit Reserve.*

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“The money didn't come directly from Hayes Capital. It came from a reserve account that was supposed to hold funds for employee bonuses, pensions, and long-term benefits.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why does it have a Hayes Capital reference?””

“Because the reserve was funded under the investment agreement. The money was supposed to be protected.””

I stared at the statement.

“Who approved the transfer?””

“Brielle arranged it.””

“And you?””

“I discovered it three days ago. I confronted her. She told me the money would be returned after the board approved the restructuring.””

“Did you believe her?””

“I wanted to.””

I stood abruptly.

“People's pensions are not a family savings account, Daniel!””

“I know!””

“Do you? Because if that money is gone, thousands of employees could be affected.””

He looked down.

“I came here because I want to help you recover it.””

“Why now?””

He hesitated.

“Because Brielle told me last night that she planned to leave the country.””

I remembered Patricia's warning.

“And you didn't tell the board?””

“I was trying to find the money first.””

I walked toward the windows.

“You should have told me the moment you discovered it.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

He stared at me.

“Of losing you.””

I turned.

“You were willing to risk my company, my reputation, and the savings of thousands of employees because you were afraid I'd leave you?””

He had no answer.

My phone rang.

Renee.

I answered and placed it on speaker.

“Nia, we have a problem.””

“What happened?””

“The forensic team found that the employee reserve account was used as collateral for a private loan.””

I looked at Daniel.

“How much?””

“Twenty-four million dollars.””

The same amount as Patricia's old document.

Renee continued.

“And the lender has just submitted a formal demand for repayment. If the debt isn't addressed, the lender may attempt to seize assets connected to the holding company.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

I asked the question I was afraid to ask.

“Where is the money now?””

Renee paused.

“We traced part of it to an offshore account. The remaining balance was used to purchase something in London.””

“What?””

“A property.””

I frowned.

“Whose property?””

Renee's answer came slowly.

“Brielle Carter's.””

Daniel grabbed the edge of the counter.

“She bought a house?””

“Not just a house,” Renee replied.

“A luxury estate registered under a private trust.””

I looked at the photograph again.

The marriage.

The investment.

The secret agreements.

Every piece was beginning to fit.

Then Renee added:

“There's another problem. The lender has notified Carter Dynamics that it intends to enforce the guarantee tomorrow morning.””

I stared at Daniel.

“Did you know about this?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

But his phone began ringing.

He glanced at the screen.

The name displayed was Samuel Whitmore.

Daniel answered.

“Samuel?””

The attorney's voice came through loudly enough for me to hear.

“Daniel, listen carefully. Your mother has made a terrible mistake.””

Daniel frowned.

“What mistake?””

“She's given Nia the original documents.””

I felt my fingers tighten around the counter.

Samuel continued.

“And if your wife takes those documents to the board, your sister won't be the only person going to prison.””

The call ended.

Daniel slowly lowered his phone.

I stared at him.

“What did he mean?””

He looked at me, his eyes full of fear.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“He means my signature is on the original loan guarantee.””
