Chapter 6: The Price of Protecting His Family

At 8:15 a.m., I entered the headquarters of Carter Dynamics.

I hadn't visited the building in nearly a year.

The lobby still had the same polished marble floors, the same enormous glass sculpture, and the same gold lettering above the reception desk.

But something had changed.

People were whispering.

Employees stood in small groups near the elevators, checking their phones. Two security guards were speaking with a man in a dark suit.

When I approached the reception desk, the young woman behind it immediately stood.

“Good morning, Ms. Hayes.””

“Good morning. Is the board meeting underway?””

“Not yet. They're waiting in the executive conference room.””

I nodded.

As I walked toward the elevators, I heard someone whisper behind me.

“That's her.””

Another voice answered.

“The investor?””

“No. Daniel Carter's wife.””

I kept walking.

I had learned a long time ago that people often spoke most honestly when they believed you couldn't hear them.

The elevator opened.

Richard Coleman was waiting inside.

“Ms. Hayes.””

“Richard.””

He looked exhausted.

“Thank you for coming.””

“I assume you know why I'm here.””

“I do.””

The elevator doors closed.

Richard adjusted his tie.

“The directors are concerned about the employee reserve account.””

“They should be.””

“Some of them believe this can be handled internally.””

I turned toward him.

“Eighteen million dollars disappeared from a protected reserve, Richard. There is also a twenty-four-million-dollar loan guarantee, an attempted transfer of voting rights, and evidence of possible document fraud.””

He swallowed.

“I understand.””

“Then let's not pretend this is a misunderstanding.””

The elevator stopped.

We stepped into the executive floor.

The conference room doors were open.

Inside, six directors were seated around a long glass table. Daniel sat near the far end, looking as though he hadn't slept.

Patricia was beside him.

Brielle's chair was empty.

Samuel Whitmore stood near the window, speaking quietly with another attorney.

When he saw me, his expression hardened.

“Ms. Hayes.””

“Mr. Whitmore.””

He approached.

“I would advise against making any accusations until all parties have had an opportunity to review the evidence.””

“I would advise you to stop moving other people's money.””

Richard cleared his throat.

“Let's begin.””

I took a seat opposite Daniel.

Renee joined me and placed three folders on the table.

The first contained the attempted voting-rights transfer.

The second contained the Northbridge transactions.

The third contained the original loan guarantee.

Patricia stared at the folders.

Samuel remained standing.

Richard opened the meeting.

“Before we proceed, I want to make clear that the board's priority is protecting Carter Dynamics, its employees, and its shareholders.””

“Agreed,” I said.

Samuel gave a small nod.

“Then perhaps we can begin by acknowledging that these allegations are premature.””

Renee opened the first folder.

“Mr. Whitmore, do you recognize this authorization?””

He glanced at the document.

“Yes.””

“Did you prepare it?””

“I prepared several drafts.””

“Did you submit the final version?””

“I don't recall.””

Renee placed another page in front of him.

“This submission contains your electronic filing credentials.””

He looked at it.

“Those credentials could have been accessed by another employee.””

“Were they?””

“I would need to investigate.””

Renee nodded.

“Then let's investigate the next document.””

She placed the bank authorization on the table.

“Do you recognize this signature?””

Samuel looked toward Daniel.

“This is a private matter involving Mr. Carter.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“It's my signature.””

Patricia turned sharply.

“Daniel!””

He ignored her.

“I signed the guarantee.””

The room went quiet.

Richard leaned forward.

“Daniel, did you understand that the guarantee involved the employee reserve?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. I was told it involved a temporary family loan.””

Samuel stepped in.

“That's not accurate.””

Daniel looked directly at him.

“Then tell them what you told me.””

Samuel's jaw tightened.

“You were fully briefed.””

“No. You told me the collateral was a dormant investment account. You never mentioned employee benefits.””

Patricia grabbed her son's arm.

“Daniel, stop talking.””

He pulled away.

“I'm done protecting everyone.””

I watched him carefully.

For the first time, he was standing against his family.

But I wasn't ready to call it courage.

Not yet.

Renee turned another page.

“The guarantee was signed eleven months ago. The lender transferred the funds to Northbridge Strategic Partners. Northbridge then purchased property in London and made additional transfers to accounts controlled by Brielle Carter.””

Richard looked toward Patricia.

“Is this true?””

Patricia's lips trembled.

“I didn't know about the property.””

Samuel interrupted.

“Again, this is an internal family matter.””

I leaned forward.

“No, Mr. Whitmore. The moment employee funds were used as collateral, it stopped being a family matter.””

One of the directors, Margaret Lewis, opened her laptop.

“If these funds are unrecoverable, the company could face significant liabilities.””

“Correct,” Renee said.

“We are working with the bank to trace and freeze the remaining assets.””

Richard looked at me.

“What does Hayes Capital intend to do?””

I placed my hands on the table.

“First, we will preserve every asset connected to the investment agreement. Second, we will commission an independent forensic audit. Third, we will request the temporary suspension of any executive or family representative implicated in the transactions.””

Samuel gave a sharp laugh.

“You cannot simply remove people because you dislike them.””

I turned toward him.

“This isn't personal.””

He looked at me.

“Your marriage suggests otherwise.””

I didn't blink.

“My marriage has nothing to do with your professional obligations.””

Renee slid another document toward Richard.

“This is the proposed emergency resolution. It temporarily removes the authority to move funds from all accounts connected to the disputed transactions.””

Richard read it.

Then he looked around the table.

“I support it.””

Margaret nodded.

“So do I.””

One by one, the other directors raised their hands.

Samuel's face darkened.

“You're making a serious mistake.””

“No,” Richard replied.

“We made a serious mistake when we failed to question the transactions.””

The resolution passed.

For the first time that morning, I felt the room shift.

The board was no longer allowing the Carter family to control the investigation.

But there was one person missing.

“Where is Brielle?”” I asked.

Patricia looked down.

“She hasn't answered my calls.””

Daniel stared at the empty chair.

“I know where she went.””

Everyone turned toward him.

“Where?”” Richard asked.

Daniel reached into his jacket and placed a folded airline itinerary on the table.

“London. She booked a flight last night.””

Renee examined the document.

“When?””

“Last night. Shortly after the dinner.””

I looked at the itinerary.

The flight was scheduled to depart at 10:40 a.m.

It was already 9:05.

“Has anyone contacted the authorities?”” I asked.

Samuel immediately stood.

“There is absolutely no reason to involve law enforcement.””

I looked at him.

“Then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.””

He slammed his hand against the table.

“You have no idea what you're setting in motion!””

Richard rose.

“Mr. Whitmore, sit down.””

Samuel looked around the room.

For the first time, he seemed to understand that he no longer controlled the meeting.

Then his phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

His expression changed.

He stepped away from the table and answered quietly.

“Yes?””

A pause.

“What do you mean, they've found it?””

Another pause.

His face became completely white.

“No. That's impossible.””

He turned toward Daniel.

Then toward Patricia.

Finally, his eyes settled on me.

“It's too late,” he whispered.

I stood.

“What is too late?””

Samuel slowly lowered his phone.

“The bank has frozen the Northbridge accounts.””

Renee nodded.

“That's correct.””

“But the money isn't there anymore.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where is it?””

Samuel looked at Daniel.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“Brielle didn't take the money to London.””

He swallowed.

“She transferred it into a Carter Dynamics account this morning.””

Richard frowned.

“Which account?””

Samuel looked directly at me.

“The acquisition reserve.””

I felt a chill move through my body.

That account wasn't used for ordinary business transactions.

It was reserved for one purpose.

The purchase of controlling interests in other companies.

I turned toward Renee.

“Who is the intended seller?””

She was already checking her laptop.

Her fingers stopped moving.

Then she looked up.

“Hayes Capital.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at me.

Patricia covered her mouth.

And I finally understood Brielle's plan.

She hadn't simply wanted my voting rights.

May you like

She had been preparing to use my own company's money to buy control of it.

*But the next document Renee opened revealed something even more disturbing: the acquisition agreement had already been signed by someone inside Hayes Capital.*
