Chapter 6: The Woman Behind the Empire

The silence afterward was louder than any argument Adrian and I had ever had.

Vanessa stared at me.

Then at Adrian.

Then back at me.

“Yours?””

The word came out almost like a laugh.

Like she couldn’t believe it.

Adrian looked away.

That was the answer.

She didn’t need me to explain.

His silence had always been more honest than his words.

Marcus placed the document on the table.

“Nia’s family trust funded the beginning of Adrian’s company.””

Vanessa blinked.

“No.””

Adrian finally spoke.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You mean don’t listen to the documents?””

Adrian’s face tightened.

“You’re twisting things.””

I stepped forward.

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“You are.””

Adrian looked at me.

I remembered the first time I met him.

He wasn’t wearing designer clothes.

He wasn’t driving luxury cars.

He wasn’t surrounded by people telling him how brilliant he was.

He was just Adrian.

Ambitious.

Hungry.

Charming.

He told me he wanted to build something.

And I believed him.

That was the part that hurt.

I believed him.

“I gave you a chance,” I said.

His eyes moved away.

“You invested in me.””

“I believed in you.””

That sentence hit harder.

Because money was replaceable.

Trust wasn’t.

Marcus opened another page.

“The agreement was clear. Nia’s investment remained protected unless certain conditions were met.””

Vanessa frowned.

“What conditions?””

I looked at Adrian.

He knew.

He had always known.

Marcus answered.

“Honesty. Loyalty. Transparency.””

Adrian laughed quietly.

A bitter sound.

“So this is revenge?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“This is consequences.””

He stepped closer.

“You planned this?””

“No.””

“Then why now?””

Because he finally asked the right question.

Why now?

I looked around the mansion.

At the walls.

The rooms where I had spent years shrinking myself.

The place where he had thrown money at me like I was someone asking for charity.

“Because today you showed me exactly who you are.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“You think Vanessa matters?””

The question surprised me.

Not because of Vanessa.

Because it showed he still didn’t understand.

“This was never about Vanessa.””

She looked hurt.

But I continued.

“This was about you.””

Adrian looked confused.

“You think I care about another woman?””

“No.””

I took a breath.

“I think you became someone who didn’t recognize me anymore.””

The room became quiet.

Even Vanessa stopped speaking.

Because the truth wasn’t always loud.

Sometimes it was just a sentence nobody wanted to hear.

Marcus checked his phone.

“There’s one more thing.””

Adrian looked at him.

“What?””

“The company board meeting.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“What about it?””

Marcus looked at me.

“It started ten minutes ago.””

My stomach tightened.

Because that was the final step.

Not the accounts.

Not the cards.

Not the property.

Those were just distractions.

The real battle had always been about reputation.

Adrian’s entire identity was built on being the genius founder.

The self-made man.

The person everyone admired.

But there was one thing about powerful people.

They feared one thing more than losing money.

Losing the story.

His phone rang.

Everyone looked.

Adrian stared at the screen.

A name appeared.

His business partner.

He answered.

“Hello?””

Nobody spoke.

We only watched his face.

At first, he looked annoyed.

Then confused.

Then shocked.

“What do you mean suspended?””

A pause.

“No, that’s impossible.””

Another pause.

His eyes slowly moved toward me.

“You can’t do that.””

He listened.

Then his hand lowered.

“What happened?”” Vanessa asked.

Adrian didn’t answer.

Marcus did.

“The board finally saw the evidence.””

Adrian looked furious.

“What evidence?””

Marcus smiled.

“The evidence you thought was destroyed.””

I felt a chill.

Because that was the part I hadn’t expected.

Marcus hadn’t just brought documents.

He had brought something else.

Something from Adrian’s past.

Something even I didn’t know.

Adrian looked at me.

“You knew?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

And for the first time in years, we were both facing the same mystery.

“What did you find?”” I asked Marcus.

He looked at me.

Then at Adrian.

His expression became serious.

“Something Adrian forgot.””

May you like

A pause.

“Someone.””
