Chapter 9: The Night Everything Changed

The message stayed on my screen.

I read it once.

Then again.

Then a third time.

“Before you read the results, you need to know what Adrian did the night Noah was born.””

My fingers went numb.

Not because I was afraid of the truth.

Because deep down, I already knew.

The truth had been standing in front of me for years.

I just never had all the pieces.

I looked at Adrian.

He looked away.

That was the first time I stopped searching his face for an explanation.

Because I finally understood something.

A person who tells the truth does not look for an escape route.

Adrian was looking for one.

“Nia,” he whispered.

I didn’t answer.

The woman I had been five years ago would have rushed to comfort him.

She would have said:

“It’s okay.””

She would have believed there was a reason.

She would have tried to save him from the consequences of his own choices.

But that woman was gone.

Marcus quietly walked toward the table.

“Open it.””

Adrian immediately reacted.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus stared at him.

“Why not?””

Adrian’s breathing became heavier.

“Nobody needs to see this.””

I looked at him.

“Nobody?””

My voice was quiet.

“But I do.””

He closed his eyes.

And that hurt more than anger.

Because for once, he wasn’t fighting.

He was surrendering.

Vanessa stood near the doorway.

She looked completely different now.

The confidence was gone.

The smug smile.

The certainty that she understood the world around her.

Gone.

“You knew this entire time?”” she asked him.

Adrian didn’t answer.

She laughed softly.

A broken laugh.

“You knew.””

He finally looked at her.

“Vanessa—”

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Don’t say my name like that fixes anything.””

I watched her.

And for a moment, I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Because she had lost the fantasy she believed in.

But I had lost years of my life.

There was a difference.

I opened the message.

The file loaded.

A document appeared.

The original medical report.

The one Adrian had hidden.

The one that explained everything.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

My heart stopped with them.

Because the result was exactly what I always hoped it would be.

Noah was mine.

And Adrian’s.

My son.

Our son.

The child we created together.

I looked up slowly.

Adrian was crying.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just silently.

Like he had finally reached the moment he could never avoid.

“You knew,” I said.

He nodded.

“I knew.””

My chest tightened.

“Then why?””

He wiped his face.

“I was afraid.””

I almost whispered:

“Of what?””

But I already knew.

Adrian had spent his entire life afraid of losing control.

He wasn’t afraid of losing me.

He was afraid of losing the version of himself everyone admired.

He looked at Noah.

“When he was born, everything changed.””

I stared at him.

“You mean when you became a father?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

The answer chilled me.

“When I realized I wasn’t the man I pretended to be.””

The room went silent.

Adrian continued.

“I had built everything on lies.””

Marcus watched him carefully.

“You’re finally admitting it.””

Adrian ignored him.

“I thought if people knew the truth about how the company started, I would lose everything.””

I said nothing.

“Then when the company investigation started, I panicked.””

My hands tightened.

“What does that have to do with Noah?””

He looked down.

And that was the hardest part.

Because I saw the shame.

Real shame.

Not fake regret.

“I thought if I lost the company…”

He stopped.

“Then I would lose you too.””

My eyes filled with anger.

“So you changed the results?””

He looked at me.

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“I didn’t change them because I doubted Noah.””

I waited.

“Then why?””

His voice cracked.

“Because I wanted something to use.””

The words were barely audible.

But everyone heard them.

Marcus looked away.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I felt like the air had disappeared.

“Use?””

Adrian nodded slowly.

“If you ever left.””

There it was.

The truth.

The ugliest truth.

Not that he didn’t love me.

That he loved me in a way that was selfish.

A way that wanted ownership instead of partnership.

“You planned to take my son from me?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“I swear, no.””

“But you kept the information.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked broken.

“Because I wanted to feel like I had something you couldn’t take away.””

I stared at him.

And suddenly, I understood.

The money.

The mansion.

The control.

It was all the same.

Adrian didn’t collect things because he loved them.

He collected things because he was terrified of losing.

Even people.

Especially people.

I walked closer.

Not to him.

To Noah.

My son reached toward me.

I held him tighter.

“I spent years wondering why you changed.””

Adrian looked at me.

“I thought maybe I wasn’t enough.””

A tear rolled down my cheek.

“But the truth is…”

I shook my head.

“You were fighting ghosts that weren’t even real.””

He looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

Two words.

So simple.

So late.

I wanted those words years ago.

I wanted them before the betrayal.

Before the humiliation.

Before I became someone who had to protect herself from the person she loved.

But apologies do not erase damage.

Marcus picked up the folder.

“There’s still one more thing.””

Adrian looked exhausted.

“What now?””

Marcus handed me another document.

“This.””

I looked down.

A signature.

A date.

My eyes narrowed.

“What is this?””

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“The agreement Adrian signed before your marriage.””

I read the first line.

Then the second.

My heart changed.

Because this wasn’t about Noah.

This wasn’t about the company.

This was about something even bigger.

Adrian had not only hidden the truth.

He had prepared for the possibility of losing me.

Before we even got married.

I looked at him.

“What is this?””

He didn’t answer.

Marcus did.

“The reason Adrian married you.””

The mansion became completely silent.

May you like

And for the first time...

I wondered if the man I loved had ever truly chosen me at all.
