Chapter 7: The Truth He Buried
The person standing at the center of Adrian’s downfall wasn’t someone from my life.
It was someone from his.
Someone he had erased.
Someone he had convinced himself would never return.
Marcus didn’t say the name immediately.
He let the silence build.
That was something Adrian never understood.
Silence could be more powerful than shouting.
“Who?”” Adrian demanded.
Marcus looked at him.
“You really don’t remember?””
Adrian’s face hardened.
“I don’t play games.””
Marcus gave a quiet laugh.
“No.””
He looked around the mansion.
“You play people.””
The words hit.
Adrian’s hands curled into fists.
“Say the name.””
Marcus finally did.
“Jordan.””
The reaction was instant.
Adrian froze.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
Vanessa noticed.
“Who is Jordan?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Adrian.
I had never seen that expression before.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Guilt.
Real guilt.
“Adrian?””
My voice was quieter.
He looked at me.
“Nia, don’t.””
That was all he said.
Don’t.
Not because it was false.
Because it was true.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Jordan was Adrian’s original business partner.””
Vanessa looked surprised.
“I thought Adrian started everything himself.””
Marcus smiled.
“That’s the story he sold everyone.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Stop talking.””
“Why?””
Marcus pointed toward the documents.
“Because the truth ruins the image?””
The room felt smaller.
I looked at Adrian.
“Who is Jordan?””
He didn’t answer.
Marcus did.
“The person Adrian betrayed before he met you.””
I felt my stomach drop.
Adrian shook his head.
“You don’t know anything about that.””
Marcus looked at him.
“I know Jordan lost everything.””
A pause.
“I know Adrian took credit for the company.””
Another pause.
“And I know Jordan was the reason Adrian met Nia in the first place.””
My eyes moved to Adrian.
“What?””
Adrian looked away.
That hurt more than anything.
Because there it was.
Another secret.
Another piece of my marriage I didn’t know.
Marcus continued.
“Jordan discovered Adrian was using the investment money illegally.””
Adrian immediately responded.
“That’s a lie.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Nia, ask him.””
I didn’t move.
I didn’t need to.
Because Adrian’s silence was already answering.
“Ask him where the first money came from.””
My throat tightened.
“Adrian.””
He looked at me.
And for the first time, he looked like the young man I used to know.
The scared one.
The one who wanted forgiveness.
“I was going to fix it.””
That sentence broke something inside me.
Not because he admitted it.
Because he had said it before.
Every mistake.
Every betrayal.
Every promise.
“I was going to fix it.””
I stepped back.
“How long?””
He didn’t answer.
“How long did you know?””
His silence continued.
Marcus looked away.
Because even he knew the answer hurt.
“Years,” Adrian finally whispered.
Vanessa looked horrified.
“You knew?””
Adrian ignored her.
He looked only at me.
“I built everything after that.””
“No.””
My voice shook slightly.
“You built everything while hiding it.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then my phone rang.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
Marcus looked at the screen.
“Answer it.””
I hesitated.
“Why?””
“Because it’s him.””
My fingers froze.
“Him?””
Marcus nodded.
“Jordan.””
The entire room changed.
I answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only breathing.
Then a man’s voice.
Older.
Tired.
But calm.
“Nia?””
I closed my eyes.
“Yes.””
“I’m sorry.””
My heart raced.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“The man your husband tried to erase.””
I looked at Adrian.
His face had gone completely pale.
The voice continued.
“I have proof.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Proof of what?””
The answer came quietly.
“Proof that Adrian’s biggest lie wasn’t about the company.””
A pause.
“It was about Noah.””
My entire body went still.
Adrian’s eyes widened.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Marcus looked at me.
May you like
And for the first time all day...
I was afraid.
