Chapter 4: The Stranger Outside My Daughter's School
For three seconds, I couldn't move.
Daniel had never mentioned having a brother.
Not once.
I remembered his childhood stories, the holidays we spent together, the photographs he kept in his apartment. There had been cousins, an uncle, and an older sister named Evelyn.
But never a brother.
“Caleb, listen to me carefully,” I said, forcing my voice to remain steady.
“Keep Tessa inside the school. Do not let that man take her anywhere. I'm coming.””
“Mom, he's asking to speak with her.””
“Tell him no.””
“He says he has proof.””
I pressed the accelerator.
“What kind of proof?””
Caleb hesitated.
“He says Daniel left something for Tessa. Something that could explain everything.””
My stomach tightened.
I reached the school in twelve minutes.
A black SUV was parked across the street. A tall man stood beside it, wearing a dark overcoat despite the warm afternoon.
He looked to be in his early forties.
Dark hair.
Brown eyes.
A narrow scar near his left eyebrow.
The resemblance to Daniel was unmistakable.
I had seen those eyes in photographs hundreds of times.
But something about the man's expression made me uneasy.
He wasn't smiling.
He was watching the school entrance.
I parked illegally and hurried inside.
The receptionist recognized me immediately.
“Mrs. Bennett, your children are in the principal's office.””
“Where is the man who came for my daughter?””
“He's waiting outside. He refused to leave.””
I found Caleb and Mason standing beside Tessa.
Caleb had one arm protectively around his sister.
Mason was holding a folded photograph.
Tessa rushed toward me.
“Mom!””
I wrapped both arms around her.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded.
Then she whispered, “He looks like Dad.””
I looked at the photograph.
It showed Daniel sitting on a wooden bench, holding baby Tessa against his chest.
Beside him stood the stranger.
On the back, someone had written:
Daniel and Jonathan, with the little girl who changed everything.
Jonathan.
I looked through the office window.
The man was still standing outside.
“Who is he?”” Mason asked.
“I don't know.””
Tessa pulled at my sleeve.
“Mom, he said his name is Jonathan Mercer.””
I felt a chill.
Mercer.
Daniel's family name.
The principal entered.
“Mrs. Bennett, the gentleman says he's your late husband's brother. He has identification and some documents.””
“Did you verify them?””
“Yes, but we haven't released any information about Tessa.””
“Good.””
The principal lowered his voice.
“He also said something concerning. He claims your husband left instructions that this man should take custody of your daughter if anything happened to him.””
I stared at him.
“That is a lie.””
“Do you have documentation?””
“I have nine years of documentation proving who has raised her.””
The principal nodded.
“I understand.””
I took Tessa's hand.
“Stay here with your brothers.””
Then I walked outside.
Jonathan turned as soon as he saw me.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he smiled sadly.
“You look exactly like you did in Daniel's wedding photographs.””
My jaw tightened.
“Don't pretend you know me.””
“I knew Daniel.””
“Apparently.””
His expression changed.
“You don't believe I'm his brother?””
“I don't believe anyone who approaches my eleven-year-old daughter outside school and announces that he's taking her away.””
He lowered his eyes.
“Fair enough.””
He reached inside his coat.
I immediately stepped backward.
“Keep your hands where I can see them.””
He slowly removed a small leather case.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Daniel and Jonathan standing outside a hospital.
Daniel was holding a newborn baby.
Tessa.
On the back was a handwritten message.
To Jonathan. If anything happens to me, protect my little girl. Don't let them use her as a weapon.
I recognized Daniel's handwriting.
My knees weakened.
“Where did you get that?””
“Daniel gave it to me.””
“When?””
“Three days before he died.””
I stared at him.
“Why didn't you come forward?””
His face hardened.
“Because the people responsible for his death were watching everyone close to him.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“Who?””
Jonathan looked toward the school entrance.
“Grant Bennett.””
I shook my head.
“Grant was Daniel's best friend.””
“He was also the last person Daniel trusted before discovering the financial fraud.””
I remembered Evelyn's warning.
Jonathan continued.
“Daniel found evidence that Grant had been moving money from Mercer Holdings into accounts controlled by Marjorie. He was going to expose them.””
“Why would Marjorie be involved?””
“Because she wasn't just Grant's mother. She was the person who controlled the family company before Daniel inherited his shares.””
I stared at him.
“What happened after Daniel died?””
Jonathan looked away.
“I was told the accident was investigated. I was told there was nothing suspicious. Then I received a call from someone claiming to represent the estate.””
“Who?””
“Grant.””
My stomach dropped.
“He said Daniel had left no children.””
I felt sick.
Jonathan continued.
“He told me you had moved overseas. He said you wanted nothing to do with the Mercer family.””
I shook my head.
“I never left.””
“I know that now.””
He looked directly at me.
“And I know why he married you.””
I couldn't speak.
Jonathan reached into his pocket again, this time removing a sealed document.
“Daniel left this with his attorney. It was supposed to be delivered to you when Tessa turned eleven.””
I stared at the envelope.
“Why eleven?””
“Because Daniel believed that by then, the people who wanted control of his shares would have made their move.””
My hands trembled as I accepted it.
There was a name written across the front.
*Tessa Mercer.*
Below it was a sentence.
To my daughter, when she is old enough to know who she is.
I looked at Jonathan.
“Why didn't the attorney deliver it?””
“Because the attorney disappeared.””
A cold silence settled between us.
Then Jonathan added:
“And because yesterday, someone broke into Daniel's old office.””
“Who?””
He looked toward the school again.
“That's what I came here to tell you.””
Before I could ask another question, my phone rang.
Grant.
I answered.
“What?””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Dana, I hear you've met Jonathan.””
I looked at the man standing in front of me.
“How do you know that?””
“Because I know everything happening around my family.””
I almost laughed.
“Your family?””
Grant ignored me.
“Send him away. Bring Tessa home. We need to discuss this privately.””
“There's nothing left to discuss.””
“Dana, you're making a mistake.””
I looked at the sealed envelope in my hand.
“No, Grant. I think I've finally stopped making them.””
His voice dropped.
“Then you should know something. Jonathan isn't the only person Daniel lied to.””
The call ended.
I stared at my phone.
Jonathan watched me carefully.
“What did he say?””
I looked at him.
“He said Daniel lied.””
Jonathan's expression changed.
Then he whispered:
“Did Daniel ever tell you why he chose the name Tessa?””
I shook my head.
Jonathan looked toward the school windows.
“Because Tessa wasn't the name he originally gave her.””
And before I could ask what that meant, he handed me another photograph.
May you like
This one showed Daniel standing beside a hospital bed.
A second newborn baby was lying beside Tessa.
