Chapter 9: The Recording That Exposed My Husband
The silence after Rachel's words was unbearable.
I looked at Grant.
He didn't deny it.
He didn't shout.
He didn't even look surprised.
He simply stared at the phone as if he wanted to reach through the screen and destroy whatever was waiting on the other side.
“Rachel,” Margaret whispered, “do you still have the recording?””
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“It's stored on an encrypted drive. I kept it at my house.””
Grant suddenly grabbed his coat.
“I'm leaving.””
Caleb moved toward the door.
“Not so fast.””
Grant glared at him.
“Move.””
“No.””
Mason stepped beside his brother.
“You're not going anywhere until we understand what happened to Daniel.””
Grant looked at me.
“Control your sons.””
I stared back.
“They're old enough to recognize a coward.””
His face tightened.
“Dana, listen to me. Everything I've done was for this family.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You stole from my daughter. You helped hide her sister. You concealed your own son. And you want me to believe you did it for family?””
“I was protecting the company.””
“From three children?””
He lowered his voice.
“You have no idea what Daniel was like.””
I stepped closer.
“Tell me.””
Grant looked toward Marjorie.
She shook her head almost imperceptibly.
But he continued.
“Daniel was reckless. He wanted to give away everything his father built. He wanted to put children in control of a company they couldn't even understand.””
“They were his children.””
“He was going to destroy us!””
The words burst out of him.
And suddenly, I understood.
Grant had never seen Tessa as a child.
He had seen her as a threat.
A legal claim.
A reminder of the man whose place he had stolen.
I looked at him.
“Did you tamper with Daniel's car?””
Grant said nothing.
Marjorie stepped forward.
“Don't answer that.””
I turned toward her.
“Why? Do you already know?””
She lifted her chin.
“You're making accusations without proof.””
“Then let us hear the recording.””
Rachel nodded from the phone.
“I'll send it to Margaret. But there's one condition.””
Everyone looked at her.
“What condition?”” Margaret asked.
Rachel swallowed.
“Grant must not be allowed near Noah.””
Grant laughed.
“I have no interest in that boy.””
Rachel's eyes filled with anger.
“You sent money to the family raising him. You paid them to keep him away from the Mercers. You threatened me when I tried to tell him the truth.””
Grant stepped toward the phone.
“That's enough.””
Rachel continued.
“You told me if Noah ever learned who his father was, he'd lose everything.””
I stared at Grant.
“You threatened a woman for protecting your own son?””
He looked away.
Margaret ended the call after promising to arrange a secure transfer of the recording.
Within an hour, the file arrived.
We moved into the library.
The curtains were drawn.
The children sat together on the sofa.
Jonathan stood near the fireplace.
Evelyn placed the audio equipment on the desk.
I sat beside Tessa.
She held my hand.
“Are we going to hear Dad's voice?””
I nodded.
“Maybe.””
She swallowed.
“I miss someone I never got to know.””
I kissed her forehead.
“I know, sweetheart.””
Evelyn pressed play.
At first, there was only static.
Then a familiar voice filled the room.
Daniel.
Older than I remembered.
Tired.
But unmistakably Daniel.
“If you're hearing this, something has happened to me. I hope I'm wrong. I hope I'm just being paranoid.””
I covered my mouth.
Tessa sat upright.
“That's him.””
I nodded through my tears.
The recording continued.
“Dana, if this reaches you, I need you to know that I never abandoned you or our children. I never agreed to give up my shares. And I never signed the transfer documents that Grant claims I signed.””
Grant shifted in his chair.
Evelyn increased the volume.
“I found the accounts. I found the forged signatures. I know my mother has been working with Grant to move money out of the company.””
Marjorie suddenly stood.
“Turn it off.””
Nobody moved.
The recording continued.
“But the money isn't the worst part. They're using the trust to hide the identity of my children. They believe that if the beneficiaries disappear, they can claim ownership permanently.””
Tessa squeezed my hand.
Daniel's voice became quieter.
*“I have three children. Tessa. Isabella.
And Noah. I love all three. If anyone tells them otherwise, they're lying.””*
Isabella began crying.
Mason put an arm around her.
Then Daniel said something that made my blood freeze.
“Grant came to see me tonight. He said he would make sure I never reached the police. He told me that if I continued investigating, Dana would lose everything.””
There was a pause.
A door slammed in the background.
Daniel continued.
“I don't know what he'll do. But if something happens to me, I need someone to look at the garage camera from October 14.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Grant.
“October 14.””
His face was pale.
“What about it?””
Jonathan stepped forward.
“That was the night Daniel's car was taken to the garage.””
Grant shook his head.
“It's meaningless.””
Evelyn reached into her bag.
“Actually, it isn't.””
She placed a small flash drive on the desk.
“Daniel's former mechanic gave this to me before he died.””
Grant stared at it.
“What is that?””
“Garage footage.””
Marjorie immediately sat down.
Evelyn connected the drive.
A grainy video appeared.
The timestamp showed October 14, eleven years earlier.
A dark-haired man entered the garage.
He wore a baseball cap and a dark jacket.
He approached Daniel's car.
Then he opened the hood.
The video was blurry, but his movements were clear.
He spent nearly twenty minutes working near the brake system.
When he finally turned toward the camera, his face became visible.
Caleb stood up.
“That's Dad.””
I couldn't breathe.
It was Grant.
No doubt.
No possible mistake.
He had been there.
He had worked on Daniel's car.
And he had lied about it for eleven years.
Grant lunged toward the computer.
Jonathan grabbed his arm.
“Don't.””
Grant struggled.
“Let go of me!””
Mason moved in front of the girls.
Caleb stepped closer.
“You killed him.””
Grant's voice broke.
“I didn't kill anyone!””
Evelyn pointed at the screen.
“Then explain what you were doing to his brakes.””
Grant looked at the footage.
Then at me.
For the first time, I saw the man I had married without the mask.
His eyes were cold.
His mouth tightened.
And then he said:
“I didn't know he would die.””
The room went silent.
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“You didn't know?””
Grant looked at the floor.
“I only wanted to scare him. I wanted him to stop investigating. I thought the brakes would fail slowly. I didn't know he'd be driving that night.””
Tessa began sobbing.
Isabella covered her ears.
Caleb moved toward Grant.
“You let us call you Dad for years.””
Grant looked at him.
“Caleb—”
“You knew what happened to Daniel, and you let Tessa grow up thinking nobody wanted her.””
Grant's face twisted.
“I raised you!””
Mason shook his head.
“You raised us in a house built on lies.””
Then the front doorbell rang.
Everyone turned.
Jonathan walked to the security monitor.
Two police officers stood outside.
Behind them was a woman holding a thick legal folder.
Margaret Collins.
She entered first.
“Dana, I filed the evidence with the authorities this morning.””
Grant went completely still.
One officer stepped forward.
“Mr. Bennett, we need you to accompany us.””
Grant looked at me.
“Dana, tell them this is a misunderstanding.””
I stared at him.
“You told me Tessa wasn't family.””
He swallowed.
“You told me Daniel was a liar.””
His eyes filled with panic.
“You told me I was crazy every time I asked why you hated my daughter.””
I stepped closer.
“And now you want me to save you?””
The officer reached for his arm.
Grant suddenly turned toward Marjorie.
“Mom, tell them!””
Marjorie stood.
For several seconds, she stared at her son.
Then she said something none of us expected.
“I told you to get rid of the car.””
Grant's face changed.
“What?””
Marjorie began crying.
“I told you to make sure Daniel couldn't expose us. But I never told you to kill him.””
The officers exchanged a look.
Evelyn slowly stepped forward.
“You knew?””
Marjorie covered her mouth.
Grant stared at his mother.
“You said you'd never tell.””
She shook her head.
“I won't go to prison for you.””
The officer placed handcuffs around Grant's wrists.
But as they led him toward the door, he suddenly stopped.
He turned toward me.
“You think this is over?””
I stared at him.
“What else could possibly be left?””
He leaned closer.
His voice dropped to a whisper.
“You've been investigating the wrong person.””
My stomach tightened.
He looked toward Marjorie.
Then toward Evelyn.
And finally, he said:
“Ask your sister-in-law who signed the original hospital transfer for Isabella.””
I turned toward Evelyn.
She had gone deathly pale.
Because she knew exactly what he meant.
May you like
And when Margaret opened the original hospital file, the name at the bottom wasn't Marjorie's.
It was Evelyn Mercer's.
