Chapter 5: The Baby Nobody Was Supposed to Find
I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.
Two newborn babies.
Two tiny faces.
Two hospital bracelets.
Daniel stood between them, looking exhausted but happy.
I turned the photograph over.
There were only six handwritten words.
My daughters. My greatest blessings.
My daughters.
Plural.
I looked up at Jonathan.
“Who is the other baby?””
He didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he glanced at the school entrance.
“We shouldn't have this conversation here.””
“Answer me.””
“Daniel had twins.””
The world seemed to tilt.
“No.””
“I understand this is difficult.””
“No, you're mistaken.””
I looked at the photograph again.
Tessa had been born eleven years ago.
I remembered the delivery room.
The doctors.
The complications.
The emergency surgery.
I remembered waking up and being told that my baby girl was healthy.
One baby.
I had never been told about another.
“Where is she?”” I whispered.
Jonathan's eyes softened.
“That's what Daniel spent the last months of his life trying to find out.””
My heart pounded.
“What do you mean?””
He opened his leather case and removed a second photograph.
It showed two bassinets in a hospital nursery.
One had a small pink blanket.
The other had a white blanket.
A handwritten note was attached.
Baby A: Tessa Mercer.
Baby B: Confidential transfer pending court authorization.
I felt my knees weaken.
“Who authorized this?””
Jonathan shook his head.
“We don't know yet.””
I stared at him.
“You're telling me someone took my baby?””
“I'm telling you Daniel believed one of his daughters had been illegally transferred.””
I covered my mouth.
Behind me, the school door opened.
Caleb appeared with Tessa and Mason.
“Mom, what's happening?””
I quickly folded the photograph.
“Nothing you need to worry about right now.””
Tessa looked at my face.
“That's not true.””
I knelt in front of her.
“Sweetheart, I need you to trust me.””
“Is that man really Dad's brother?””
“Yes.””
“Did Dad have another daughter?””
My mouth went dry.
I looked at Jonathan.
He nodded.
Tessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I have a sister?””
I took her hands.
“We don't know everything yet.””
“But I have a sister?””
“Yes.””
She looked down.
“Does she know about me?””
I couldn't answer.
Jonathan stepped closer.
“Your father never stopped looking for her, Tessa.””
She turned toward him.
“Did he love her?””
“With everything he had.””
“Then why didn't he find her?””
Jonathan's eyes filled.
“Because someone made sure he couldn't.””
Caleb clenched his fists.
“I'm getting tired of hearing that someone did something to our family.””
Mason nodded.
“Whoever it is, we need to find them.””
Jonathan looked at the boys.
“You're Daniel's family too?””
Caleb frowned.
“We're Dana's sons. Tessa's brothers.””
Jonathan smiled faintly.
“Then Daniel would have liked you.””
For a moment, the tension eased.
Then a black sedan pulled up beside the school.
A woman stepped out.
She was in her late sixties, wearing a navy coat and carrying a leather briefcase.
Jonathan immediately stiffened.
“That's not good.””
“Who is she?”” I asked.
“Margaret Collins. Daniel's former attorney.””
I stared at him.
“You said the attorney disappeared.””
“Her assistant did. Margaret vanished shortly afterward.””
The woman approached us.
“Jonathan.””
He nodded.
“Margaret.””
She looked at me.
“Dana Mercer?””
I swallowed.
“Yes.””
Her expression softened.
“I'm sorry it took so long.””
She opened her briefcase and removed a thick folder.
“I've been trying to reach you for years.””
I stared at the documents.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel left instructions that could not be carried out until Tessa's eleventh birthday.””
I looked at Jonathan.
He nodded.
Margaret continued.
“Your daughter has reached the age specified in her father's will. That means the trust protections are now active.””
“What protections?””
She opened the folder.
“The Mercer family shares were never supposed to be controlled by Grant Bennett. He was appointed temporary administrator only until Tessa reached eleven.””
I felt my stomach twist.
“Grant told me he owned the company.””
Margaret gave a bitter laugh.
“Grant owns nothing of the shares Daniel left behind.””
She placed a document in my hands.
It was a legal certificate bearing Daniel's signature.
At the bottom was a paragraph naming Tessa as the sole primary beneficiary.
I read it twice.
Then a third time.
“Why did Daniel wait until eleven?””
Margaret closed the folder.
“Because he suspected someone would attempt to gain control of the inheritance through you. He believed a divorce or custody dispute might be used to force a settlement.””
My mind went straight to the papers on the marble table.
Grant hadn't simply decided our marriage was over.
He had filed for divorce just as Tessa reached the age specified in Daniel's will.
He wanted to separate himself from the trust before the restrictions became enforceable.
Or perhaps he wanted to take something before he lost control.
I looked at Margaret.
“What happens now?””
“An independent review of the trust. A formal transfer of administration. And a full investigation into the previous transactions.””
“Can Grant stop it?””
“No.””
“Can Marjorie?””
Margaret's expression became serious.
“They can try.””
She handed me another sheet.
“This is the original guardianship agreement. Daniel named you as Tessa's sole guardian and appointed Jonathan as her alternate protector if you became unavailable.””
I looked at Jonathan.
“Protector?””
He nodded.
“I didn't want to take your daughter away. I wanted to make sure nobody else could.””
For the first time, I believed him.
Then Margaret removed one final document.
“This is the medical record Daniel kept.””
I looked at the heading.
The hospital's name was familiar.
It was the hospital where I had given birth.
My fingers went cold.
“Why do you have this?””
Margaret lowered her voice.
“Because it contains the original birth records for both children.””
She pointed to a line near the bottom.
The second baby's name was listed.
*Baby B: Isabella Mercer.*
I read the name silently.
Isabella.
My other daughter.
My missing child.
Then I saw the next line.
*Receiving guardian: Marjorie Bennett.*
I looked up.
Margaret nodded slowly.
“Marjorie signed the transfer.””
My world shattered.
The woman who had spent nine years telling Tessa she wasn't family had been legally appointed guardian of her twin sister.
I looked at Jonathan.
“Where is Isabella now?””
He took a long breath.
“We believe she's been living under another name.””
“Where?””
Margaret opened a final envelope.
Inside was a recent photograph of a teenage girl with dark curls and familiar brown eyes.
She looked almost exactly like Tessa.
On the back was an address.
May you like
And beneath it, someone had written:
*She's been living in Marjorie's house for the last nine years.*
